Guitar Picks Case - Made From an Old CD Case

Not being able to make pick holders or cases from wood (lack of tools and materials), I thought there had to be another way to store them in an elegant manner.

So, after some research, I found someone who had the solution to my problems. The original idea was taken from this video:

I tried to replicate, but did my own adjustments... And that's what I'm going to show you on my very first instructable!

Step 1: Materials

For this you'll need:

1 - Old CD case

2 - Leftover cardboard (about 2mm thick)

3 - X-acto knife or scissors

4 - Printed A4 template (psd file, but you can do it by hand because I give you all the measurements)

5 - Glue

6 - Picks

Step 2: How It Works

We're using 2 pieces of cardboard glued together so that when you make an incision for your picks, they stay trapped between the layers and make a stable anchor point for them.

In order to display the picks, we use an empty CD case to hold the cardboard in place and to give you easy access to them.

Step 3: Preparing the Case

First, you need to remove the plastic part which holds the CD.

Use something thin (ruler or a letter opener) so that you can create some space between those layers, apply some force and it should pop right off.

Also remove all the papers that come with it.

Step 4: Using the Template

Print out the template (measurements indicated there) and get your cardboard.

I used an old little box that was laying around.

Step 5: Cutting Time

Cut two pieces of cardboard (around 2mm thick, each one) using the template.

Step 6: Glue It All Together

Glue the two pieces together, adding glue mostly on the edges. This way, you will be able to work better when trying to secure your picks between those two layers.

Glue your desired artwork too.

Step 7: Fit It Into the CD Case

It might take a little adjustment to make it perfect, so trim the edges if needed. It really depends on the case you're using, because not all of them are the same.

Tuck it all the way to the right.

Step 8: Prepare the Picks

Try picturing where you want your picks to be. I didn't want to cover up much of the artwork, so I layed them out in that order.

Step 9: Put Your Picks In

Make a small incision using an X-acto knife, a little under the width of the pick. Insert the pick in the cut and repeat.

Please note that if you can get the pick between those two layers of cardboard, they should stay angled making it easier to remove them and insert them back in place.
