But that doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. I can watch my 14 yo nephew jam on GH all day long. I dig it that he digs it so much.
One day he was all super-frustrated that he couldn't nail some "lame-ass song nobody ever heard of" because it was just too bizzy and it made no sense to him. I had never seen him get so pissy about a song before, so I wondered if I could maybe help him out, so I asked him "What tune you workin on?"
"I dunno how to pronounce it, but it's spelled Y-Y-Z."
D'OH!
I immediately zoomed upstairs and dug my headless Steinberger out of my retired gear closet, plugged it into my trusty Gallien Kruger RB800 & Trace Elliot 1 x 18 and Harke 2 x 10.....and started the whole house a-rumblin with that crazy C F# F# C - C F# F# spastic rhythm intro.
I thought he'd be mega-impressed, but instead he had a teenage version of "Thousand Yard Stare" on his face.
When I gave up on trying to impress him, all he did was ask if that was some piece they make people learn at music skool as an abstract concept.
He was so unimpressed that I felt like maybe my fly was open.
Oh well.
Fret boards require a bit of brain power for two hands. This is the same brain power that you lose if you don't use it. Guitars make your mind work because of all the different types of finger details for both hands. Its called dexterity and the brain after lots of practicing those finger hand strumming movements gets to know those without too much thought(automacity) Like a gymnastist does things over and over and over, the mind takes care of the practice and allows you to take other harder challanges whilst they're airborne. That's very important as you get older and making more brain movements and connections (synaps) is great for you personal space and self esteem. Ask all the older guitarist who feel good about playing what they want and they just pick up a guitar and rattle off 50 tunes without even being worried. I know guys who can put lead breaks from five different songs into the one song because they don't even think about doing it . The brain power takes over.
Guitar hero is just a bad habit and like e-books coming in big time now, people will read them and then somehow, later on in life, discover real books with hard covers and say I found out that I like reading from old books in libraries.
Does anybody remember laughter?
Be a real Guitar Hero
for me GH is like any other game, A GAME and nothing else, is just like pacman, like it? play it, but if you like the guitar don't ask daddy to buy GH, buy a real guitar, a wah-wah and any distort pedal and then play guitar the same hours your friends play GH, few months after that, you will enjoy playing your guitar, and they will be playing the next "amazing" game. I do not like to play "real life" activities, if i can do it for real...
The guitar is a challenge as it is. I played bass for half of every set in one of my bands. My hardest thing to do was...play single notes and sing at the same time. After about 3 months, I got better. Kind of like patting your head and rubbing your belly at the same time...

all the time and money you guys spend on those video games, you could actually be descent guitar players, and actually do something good in your life, instead of wasting your life sitting around your tv.
