How to Make Halloween Brownie Cake Pops
Hello, in this instructable, we will be making Halloween themed Brownie Cake Pops. Instead of just making brownies, why not kick up the creativity a notch and make some halloween themed brownie pops. They are really easy to make, and sure to impress your family and friends. Not too mention they are delicious! Enjoy!
- Brownies (use your own recipe, or follow this brownie instructable - https://www.instructables.com/id/Brownies-from-Scra..., or use a brownie mix from the store)
- Chocolate frosting (depending on how "fudgey" the brownies are, you will need to add some frosting)
- some sort of spatula
- tablespoon (round)
- lollipop sticks
- various colors of Candy Melts (can be found at Walmart, Michael's, Online) I have found Walmart to be the cheapest, you could try Target too, Michael's is more expensive, but again you can find them on Amazon as well with that link, if you can't make it to a store that has them.
- decorating candies (red hots, mike and ikes, etc)
- cutting board
- sheet pan
- parchment paper
- styrofoam block with holes in it
- your own creativity :)
Step 1: Make Brownies
First we will make our brownies. Use your favorite Brownie recipe, or you can follow mine, or just grab a brownie mix from the store. Once the brownies are prepared, let them cool completely. 30 minutes to an hour. Then we will cut along the inside, about a half of an inch from the side. We don't want the side bits, they are too hard. However, those are great to snack on! :) Then using some sort of spatula, we scoop out the brownie and place it in our bowl.
Step 2: Add Frosting
Next, we add a little bit of frosting. Depending on how "fudgey" your brownie is, will depend on how much frosting you will need to add. If the brownie is really fudgey you may not need to add any. I am adding a couple tablespoons worth. If it is more of a cake-like brownie, definitely add the frosting, maybe start with a 3rd of a cup and go from there. Then mix it together with the brownies, with your hands.
Step 3: Scoop and Roll
Now we take our little rounded tablespoon scoop and scoop out some brownie, then roll it up into a nice ball, then place it on a parchment paper lined sheet pan. Once we have them all rolled out, put them in the Freezer for 45 minutes to an hour. We don't want them completely frozen. After that we will put them in the fridge, until we are ready to dip them.
Step 4: Dip and Stick
Once the brownie balls have had time to chill, we melt some candy melts. I just put them in a wide glass and melt them in the microwave on hi for 30 seconds, then stir, then 25 to 30 seconds, that usually does it. Next dip the tip of your lollipop stick in the candy melt, and then stick it into the bottom of your brownie ball. Do this with all your sticks and the colors of candy melts. Ideally whatever color you are using for this, will be the color of the whole brownie pop. The reason why we are doing this is because this acts like glue to help hold the brownie ball on the stick. Next put them in the fridge or freezer for about 5 minutes to let that little bit of candy melt set.
Step 5: Prepare Candies
Now for the pumpkin ones, I need a little green top, so I am going to use green Mike and Ikes. :) cut them in half, we don't need the whole thing. Eat the other half. mmm yummy.
Step 6: Dip, Shake, Stick, Place
Now once our base brownie pops are chilled, we dip them in the candy melt. Make sure the candy melt isn't too thick. You might need to put it back in the microwave for 10 seconds. As we dip, we go straight down, don't stir the brownie around in their, it will fall off! You can gently move it around, but not much, then pull it out. Next lightly tap it on your finger, to get the excess candy melt off. Then stick it in your styrofoam block. I just took a piece of styrofoam and poke holes in it, nothing fancy. Then place your little green mike and ike tip on the top.
Step 7: Another Angle
Just a closer angle of dipping one of them. :)
Step 8: Be Careful
Again, I want to reiterate, you need to be careful when dipping. My red candy melts got too thick, I dipped my brownie into it, and moved it ever so slightly and the brownie fell off... :( It's ok, don't fret. Just scoop it out and put it on the parchment paper, it will make a little treat for later, just not a pretty one. haha
Step 9: Place Them Back in the Fridge
Now we place them back in the fridge for 20 minutes to let the candy melts properly set up. You can also just leave them out at room temperature. It is quicker in the fridge. At this time you can prepare your face making items/decorations.
Step 10: Option 1 the Face Writer
There are several options for creating the faces. This option is by using a Food Writer. I am using one from Wilton. I found mine at Walmart, but you can certainly find them online as well.
To be honest, it is not my favorite look, however it does work. I guess I was expecting it to look as clear as a Sharpie would.
Step 11: Option 2 Decorating Gel
The next option is by using a decorating gel. This works pretty well. Gives it a glossy look. Again, I found this at Walmart. Any cake decorating store will probably have it, Target, and Michael's will probably as well. Or as always try Amazon - Wilton Black Gel Tube
Step 12: Option 3 Decorating Icing
The next option is to use Black Decorating Icing. I like this option, it is pretty easy to manage, and the look is pretty nice. It is hard to get really fine looking lines, but still looks good. You can find this at the same places as all the others. Your local supermarket might have a decorating section as well, where they sell the cupcake and cake mixes.
Step 13: Option 4
You can also just use candy melts do make the faces. It also can act as glue, so you can add other decorations. I use another lollipop stick as my brush. Feel free to use an actual paint brush. Make sure it is a new one.
Step 14: Enjoy!
Now we have several different Halloween Themed Brownie pops ready. :) Great for a party, or for the family, friends, whatever! Have fun with it. They taste super yummy too!!
