Halloween decor werewolf head

Halloween decor werewolf head
I think your haunted house wall needs a big scary monster on it. Let's figure out how to make a realistic werewolf head using hot glue, a taxidermy form, sculpey, wire, fake fur and glass eyes. Sound like fun?

Please be sure to read the entire Instructable before posting questions! And remember..google is your friend :)

EDIT, october 2010: I was introduced to something called Magic Sculpt by a prop building colleague. I would highly recommend using that instead of the super sculpey i originally used for the sculpt. Magic Sculpt mixes together like an epoxy but is used like clay. You have a 2-3 hour window to work with it and it can be smoothed with water. It is tougher than sculpey and you do not have to use a hair dryer on it. It is not liable to crack like sculpey can. It will also stick to surfaces much better than sculpey.

Drawback: It is VERY heavy! It is more difficult to get fine detail with this stuff.

Where to buy: amazon.com has it as well as a few places online

Step 1Carve out the face, add some features

Carve out the face, add some features
This step you need:

Foam taxidermy form ( black bear or grizzly bear depending on size you want)
Sculpey
Wire

Please note! If you have issues with buying a taxidermy form, you can carve a basic form out of rigid insulation foam. I chose to use a bear form to save time. I don't have a tutorial on how to make a rigid foam carving, sorry. It's the pink stuff you can buy at Home Depot but i don't have any more info for that.

I also apologize for not having a "start" image for the bear form. I made this project without the intention of making it into an Instructable until after i was well into it.

Dremel or carve off the nose and drill a hole for glass eyes to be set into. Carve out where ever you are going to add sculpey and change the shape of the face. Bears have long droopy lips so you might want to shave them off so you can add your own snarly ones.I bought a form with an open mouth...the lower jaw is separate so you don't see it in these photos. Don't add your jaw until you sculpt all of the teeth first!

Add your sculpey. You may want to anchor longer parts into the foam with thick armature wire. Please note this on the pink clay version. Sculpt away! Remember adding fur will add some bulk to the sculpt so try not to make things too thick as far as the snout/facial muscles go.

I think a video might help to get the things shown though (no offence I get the point where it is very much easier with this) if you have enough time and things to make it with

This reminds me of that creepy "nothing" creature that follows Bastian in The Neverending Story! GREAT JOB!

I was very inspired by your build so I duplicated it added moving eyes, ears that drop back, snarling lips and nose and got the jaw to work via strings. The head was just used in a movie called Dogman

You can also use acrylic sealer (ex: Walmart has it next to their paints and canvas). It comes in a ready-to-use spray can unlike resin (which you have to mix with a catalyst) and a few light coats should do it. I use it on the beaks for my gryphon costumes and it protects paint from scratches and flaking very well.

Looks awesome. Only suggestion would be on the hair. All one color makes it look "flat" Suggestion would be to mingle lighter greys to give it a more realistic look. Or if the hair is a single piece, use a streaking technique as a hairdresser would to add the hightlights.

Awesome job!!!

why does your werewolf have cat eyes?
Feb 26, 2011. 7:00 PMredghostrider says:
Why not? I think that the "cat eyes" look definitely adds a supernatural element to it. After all, the werewolf is supposed to be a human who turns into a wolf @ night. So, if you can go along with the fact that a grown man, grows hair, long fangs, an elongated face, etc, & turns into a large wolf, why can't you believe that his eyes change into "cat eyes"?

Besides, I can think of @ least one fictional werewolf creature that had "cat eyes", and that would be MJ in "Thriller". There may be more in movie/TV fiction, so check it out.

this is totally awesome! I do have a question about the longer fur, though. What kind of fur did you get from nftech? I'm assuming full werewolf but I just wanted to ask because the website doesn't have any images of their products. Thanks in advance, and keep up the amazing work!

Dude is it possible that I could buy one off of you? My family doesn't have the money for a classy Halloween, but when my kids saw this they really wanted one. But I don't think we can afford the time and effort with everything going on around here. And we don't have the money to buy all of the materials either, especially the expensive bear form. I understand if you won't want to make another one but please hit me up with an answer, because I really don't want to disappoint my kids, but I also don't want to waste all of their Christmas present money on a Halloween decoration.

Either way, you did a WONDERFUL job crafting this and I really hope to see some more of your work in the future.

May luck be with you,
Chester in KY

Man I really wish it was eays to get taxidermy forms over here. I might just buy one off ebay ((Googled Taxidermy Forms)) I saw a girl make a massive pink faux fur monster blanket with a pig form for the head. She added sculpey to change the shape of the brow etc a bit, then covered it in hot pink fur, but it looked amazing. I love this so much! Thanks for the inspiration + how to!

I was looking for ideas for a werewolf head and I didn't even realize that sites like this, that allow people to show others how to make cool things, existed. Thank you so much for sharing your talents with others and for giving me inspiriation to make a werewolf head of my own.
