Introduction: Hanging Guitar Stand

I created this guitar stand as a "under $10" secret santa gift using some leftover plywood and stain.  Most of the actual cost went into the hardware.

Step 1: Trace and Cut Upright Arm

I used 3/4" leftover plywood for the stand.  Trace out template for upright arm & cut with jigsaw.  The front to back dimensions were approximately 2x the depth of an acoustic guitar.  Height was enough to keep the guitar off the floor from the headstock down.

Step 2: Complete Arm Cut

Lots of sanding required here!

Step 3: Base Cut

I tapered the back so the front is slightly wider.  Front dimension is slightly smaller than the width of the acoustic guitar.  Front to back dimensions are approximately 3x the depth of the guitar.

Step 4: Cut Out Top to Hold Guitar

I free handed this cut, ensuring the inside width was wide enough to hold the headstock of the guitar.

Step 5: Installing Mounting Bolts - Bottom

Holes on the bottom of the upright arm were pre-drilled and tapped with hex drive threaded inserts.

Step 6: Installing Mounting Bolts - Top

One hole drilled for hex screw thread and one for a dowel to prevent the top from spinning.

Step 7: Drill Base Holes

Three holes drilled on rear center of base to align with arm threads from step #5.  Four holes drilled in each corner for screw on stainless steel feet.

Step 8: Sanding and Stain

Lots of sanding to get the curves and edges smooth.  Since I used plywood for this construction, I elected to use a dark stain to cover the plywood layers on the edge.

Step 9: Stain and Poly

I stained the sides and top with a honey stain to mimic an acoustic guitar stain.  Four coats of glossy poly were added to finish it off.

Step 10:

Metal base feet screwed in & my sharpie inscription on the bottom (this was a secret santa gift).

Step 11: Felt Wrap

Fully assembled from the top.  I cut and stuck on two felt pieces on the top to protect the finish of the guitar.
