Convert an old harddrive from a decktop PC into a cool looking desk clock.

Locate an old hard drive.

I found one with actual screws securing the case and circuit board.

Purchase a clock mechanism with a 3/4 inch long shaft from a hobby store.

I made this with some nice gold hands, check it out here http://www.seanwinters.dx.am/?p=36

Getting the motor/bearing out was a bit of a pain :)

Just made mine today, had a HD laying around on my desk for a few months and figured I'd give it up for a better use.

I really like this! I've been looking at a bunch of different clocks, many of which are HDD-based, but this is the only one that is simple enough to do in an afternoon. Thanks a ton, I'll be making it right away!
nice creation...but i already have this on my study table.
will add the pics soon

That's great that you have one on your study table. I built mine last weekend and its sitting on my desk. It satisfies the Dead Computer Contest requirments.
this is so cool! I like how you added the number buttons for time. It's a great touch for anyone's room. VERY CREATIVE!!!!! I hope you win the contest!

Thanks. I have this on my desk at work and the other IT folks like it also.
