Introduction: Harry Potter Hedwig Owl Polymer Clay Necklace

Sculpting the adorable Hedwig in flight may seem daunting, but I made this project to be made by both beginners and advanced clay crafters. It makes a very cute gift for Harry Potter fans or wear it for yourself and impress friends and family by your new make.

Step 1: Materials

  • Polymer Clay (Oven baked modelling clay) Colors: black, white, cream, red, yellow
  • Knife
  • Liquid Clay - Fimo Dekogel
  • Clay tools: ball tools, needle tool
  • Wire cutter and pliers
  • Acrylic paint and brushes
  • 2 Eyepins
  • 3 Jumprings
  • Chain 2 pieces, 7 inches each

Step 2: Making the Body and Wings

Make an oval shape with a tapered end for the owl's body. Put a flattened round shape on top for the head.

To make the wings, cut out an inverted heart shape as shown from a thin piece of white clay and make another one for the other wing.

Make the feathers by making oval shapes with tapered end and attach on the bottom part of the wings. For the upper second layer, make the feathers slightly smaller. Then use a needle tool to texture each feather. Attach 2 long ropes of clay for the very top part of each wing then drag the clay downwards using a paddle tool to create the smallest feathers. The tail is also made the same way but with only four feathers.

Step 3: Face , Feet and Letter Envelope

The feet are very thin short pieces of black clay attached on the bottom part of the body.

To make the eyes, use a ball tool to make eye sockets. Fill the sockets with black clay and blend on the sockets. Shape 2 balls of yellow clay for the eyes and 2 tiny pieces of black clay for the pupils. Also add 2 elongated shapes of white clay around the eyes.

To make Harry's letter, cut a rectangular and triangular piece of cream clay with a knife and attach on the body. Make the seal with a small piece of red clay indented with a ball tool on the middle. Put a short thin rope of black clay on top of the envelope for the beak.

Bake the piece in an oven based on your clay manufacturer's directions. I baked mine for 130 degrees celsius for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Making the Necklace

To make the pendant, I added a sheet of black clay to the back and attached 2 pieces of eye pins. The extra sheet of clay added will make the pendant durable. I also put liquid clay to help attach the baked clay from the raw clay.

Accentuate the feathers by applying a thinned down layer of light gray paint then removing the excess paint on the surface with a tissue.

Bake the piece once again.

After baking, attach the jump rings, chain and lobster clasp to the pendant and both chains.
