Introduction: Harry Potter - Spell Jar

About: Love creating things!! Illustrator and creator.

So I found this empty pickle jar just sitting around on the side and thought why not turn that into a project? Also I'm a huge Harry Potter fan, I've read the books, seen the films and also visited the studios in the UK. So I tried to make an easy craft idea for people who love Harry Potter and want to make things for their home.

Step 1: What You Will Need

For this project you will need:
- A jar (I used a pickle jar)
- A hot glue gun
- Brown, Yellow and black paint
- Sponges
- A lipstick wand
- scissors

Step 2: The Jar

The first thing I did was peel the label off but as you can see it left some of the sticker on the jar so I would recommend scrubbing the label in hot water to remove it.

Anyway so the first thing I did was decide what to write on the jar, something they would possibly have in the wizarding world. I chose "Dragon Dust" to write on the jar.

I heated the glue up and started to write on the jar. You need to be really careful as obviously the glue is extremely hot but it takes a while to cool down. Once I wrote the words on the jar I made a squiggly border to make it seem like a label.

Step 3: Make It Neat

For this step I used a pair of scissors to neaten the words up as there were little bits of hot glue strings all over it also some of the letters dropped down so I just clipped away the parts I wanted too.

Step 4: Base Colour

For the main colour of the jar I mixed a bit of brown with a lot of yellow to make a sort of golden colour. Instead of using paint brushes I used sponges as it made it easier to spread the paint around. Make sure the entire thing is covered in paint just like the pictures above.

After the first coat of paint I let it set for around 15 minutes and then did a second coat to make the paint stronger. Also it got rid of any streaks in the paint. Once the second coat had completely dry I then started the letters

Step 5: The Letters

Usually I struggle finding the right kind of brush for a job like this and I came up with the idea of using an old lipstick wand, it was so easy to use and it didn't soak up the paint so I could use it for a while without needing to dip it into more paint. All you need to do is go over the letters and the border with the black paint and once you've done that then let it dry.

Step 6: Final Piece

So there we go! You now have a cool Harry Potter jar to store whatever you want in there. This creative idea is also a really good present for any Harry Potter fan. You don't have to use the same colours as I did you can change it also you can write whatever you want on it! Good luck with this project and have fun with it :)
