This is the Hellboy cake I made for That Takes The Cake 2011 in Austin, TX. I learned a lot and it was a lot of fun, even though I had some issues with my cake! It was a really cool experience and I'm looking forward to the next show I'm entering (in a little under 2 weeks!)

I decided I'd jump right in and enter the Showcake category! Scary but fun! The theme for this category was Super Heroes and Super Villians, from comic, TV, movies, books, etc. I chose Hellboy because I love Mignola's art and I also loved Ron Perlman as Hellboy in the movies. There were awards for places 1st through 10th and I actually placed! I was 8th :) I seriously didn't think I would even come close to placing in the top 10 so I'd stopped worrying about it and just enjoyed the show so it was a nice suprise at the end!

I'll be the first to admit that I don't have the best time management skills :) hee hee, so I was running behind and most of him was painted by brush at 3am in the back of a speeding mini-van we borrowed (no tickets, whew!), by it's little light, while my husband drove us down to Austin. He was still wet when we set up at the show and when it was judged. SUPER shiny! So now I'm learning to use my airbrush :) and plan and start way in advance!

I also learned a lot about support! This was the biggest cake I have ever made and poor Hellboy lost his head, lol. The 4 hour drive helped along the falling apart. At show takedown I pulled his head off and took that and the base home. His body went in the trash. :( But we ate his head! LOL Hellboy's brains are yummy!

Since I was so behind I didn't take time to take lots of photos during the making so I decided to just make a slideshow instead of an Instructable. Planning to make one for this cake I'm working on now for the next show!

Wait a minute... you're surprised you placed?!? This is phenomenal!!! The sculpting alone is breathtaking. Once you get your airbrush down, you're going to be a force to be reckoned with!!

I mean, look... you have me abusing exclamation points again! ;) Congratulations on 8th place... you deserved it, if not higher!
