Introduction: Herramienta Útil (useful Tool)

About: I am leaving Instructables, soon. I am very upset with the turnaround that has the page to post the manufacture of a dildo. Me llamo Osvaldo Julio Schiavoni I speak Spanish, not English. I use automatic tran…

--------------------------------------

When I cut the staves to my first bowl with lid, made with my method, I had measurement errors due to the difficulty of measuring with certain approach the angles involved. The thing was solved by removing a board into the case body, and adding half stave in the case of the lid. Keep in mind that the error in the inclination of the cutting blade is multiplied by twice the number of staves. The same goes with tilting of wood sled. Then, if the part to build is for example 18 staves, a small error of third degree (20 arc minutes) becomes an error of 10.8°, which is very difficult to conceal.

I wanted to buy an industrial protractor, but the price scared me. My
Instructables friend Bill Wells sent me the photo of two protractors he made, and I decided to make my own.

Buy a good school
protractor.

In any school library can get a cheap and relatively accurate protractor. I got one for 1 U$S, then two 0.25 U$S. Regarding accuracy, I have not much chance to verify it, I just have to trust that the manufacturers have been fairly responsible.

Search for a used saw blade.

I have said time and again that I do not throw anything away. Particularly, used saw blades are extremely useful for small cutters, for occasional use as a rule, to replace a spring, etc. So I have always them at hand. The teeth can be easily removed with a
table grinder, for the purpose of having two straight and parallel sides.

Find a piece of brass plate/sheet.

When a piece of outlet passes to better life, small bronze pieces that were used to contact serve to use them as "weird" things like this. If not get a piece having a tab with hole like this, we must do it.

Find a small screw and nut.

If we can get one small enough to fit through the hole of the brass piece, OK. If not, we enlarge the hole and go. But you can not enlarge too much, so evaluate whether business is not going to buy the little screw with nut.

Extend the nut.

This step is more a
future convenience than a necessity. If the nut is too small, handle it will be a little more difficult. Therefore, it is expedient to fit inside a small tube, preferably metal. In my case, I used a small aluminum conical tube, do not ask me where I got it. It may have been the tip of a pen.

Make a notch in the blade.

The bronze piece should be soldered so that the center of the hole through which the screw is flush with the edge of the saw blade. For that we must make this a notch with the grinder.

Weld the brass piece.

Clean up with sandpaper the saw blade in the vicinity of the notch, apply flux for soldering tin, heat slightly over a gas flame and support the tin wire until melted. Spread it on the surface where it will be welded bronze piece. Tin it also the same way, and once done, contacting both tinned surfaces, keeping them tight with two clamps, make some few seconds over the gas flame to melt tin and both parts are welded.

Drill the plastic.

Most plastic protractors come with a small hole in the center point of the angle to be measured. Probably it is too small to pass the screw, so we have to enlarge it a bit.

Assemble all.

Pierce the little screw through the hole in the brass plate, then through the plastic and screw –not much– the nut.

How to use: rest the bottom edge of the
plastic protractor on one side of the angle to be measured, and then move the metal sheet until it rests correctly on the other side. The opposite end shows the angle on the scale of the protractor.
