High Voltage Power Supply For Marx Generator by Plasmana

Step 8: Sparks and stuff

Best luck to you for making a Marx Generator and the high voltage power supply!

You don't have to use the voltage multiplier just only for the Marx Generator, you can use it as a high voltage power supply for some thing else, like kirlian photography, static motor, and stuff like that. Or you can use it just for fun like make sparks jump between the ends of the wires, and impress your friends with it too! Like I did below on the pictures! :-)

If you want more voltage from the voltage multiplier, just simply add more stages of capacitors and diodes! Each stage will add on another 120v or 240v to the voltage multiplier.

Well, I hoped you enjoyed this instructable!

hi,how much is one stage?

Does anyone here know how to use one of these to make a Negitive Ion Generator? I'm in the USA using 120vac.

Thanks

Im pretty sure that you just switch the ac input wires on the voltage multiplier. That way, the 6kv output will be negative relative to ground. Look it up on google images, because i know I saw a schematic for a negative ionizer that pretty much just had the leads switched from what this guy has

there is an instructable on that.

hello i am new to this site and i was intersted in constructing my own CW voltage multiplier to power a marx generator. I have all the parts for both and ect. but was wondering how do i simply connect the output source of the multiplier to the input if the marx generator. thanks

hi i am very instreasted in this i was wondering can this be used say on a Generator like a Car alternator so that it give really high voltage like 240volt using bigger caps and if so what sort of amps could i pull from this thanks.

does it work with a strobe light from a disposable camera? that would be cool.
Plasmana (author) says: Apr 14, 2009. 7:47 AM
Unfortunately not, the voltage is too low...

I have actually ran a flash tube with a cold cathode light inverter which pushes out around 1kV ac and the way I got it to arc is one of the wires was hooked up to one end of the flash tube and the other was hooked up to the other end and a metal plate and I was able to get it to light up that way but could not even get a single arc without the metal plate so that might be how you would have to do it with this.

Most of the capacitors I have found in disposable cameras are 330V.
codex653 says: Jul 25, 2009. 7:23 AM
yeah but then they are discharged through another transformer that steps it up to way way high voltage momentarily and that's what flashes it.
shuhia says: Apr 27, 2009. 6:40 AM
how i build a mini transformer from 9volt to 240vac(vdc)
codex653 says: Jul 25, 2009. 7:24 AM
yeah it's much better to do what jacksonwalters says. i've been trying to build my own transformers for quite a while now, and let me tell you, it's a pain.
jacksonwalters says: Apr 29, 2009. 8:59 AM
You really just need an inverter. Take a wall wart, open it up, and reverse it so that your 9V supply becomes the 120VAC output. Then you can use like one stage of these diode rectifier things and get it to 240VDC.

Can i use 160 mA fuse instead of 100 mA. Also can i ust it directly 18- capacitor "High Voltage Power Supply For Marx Generator" with Marx Generator.. and what precautions should i use while using with it ? THANKS

any one now how to decrease 240volt ac to 12 vac for a relay 12vac
alah says: Jul 2, 2009. 11:28 PM
Best way is using a 220/240v to 12 v transformer. If not, measure the resitance of your relay´s 12v coil and place a power resistor whose value should be 9 times the coilsresistance.
shanemc01 says: Apr 27, 2009. 3:35 PM
does it matter how you connect the capacitors? I'm talking about the polarity. Do you need to start with the positive or negative?
bylerfamily says: Jul 2, 2009. 11:05 AM
Film capacitors don't have polarity...
bodo says: May 30, 2009. 7:04 AM
hi everyone it is posible but dangerous eventhough use a ignition coil from a car get 30 kv it alon makes grate sparks and is useful in marx generator also
jacksonwalters says: Apr 26, 2009. 12:37 PM
Two questions: How is it that the capacitors only rated at 400V are handling the 6kV and doesn't each stage of this do the exact same thing as the stages in a Marx generator? Why build both?
rocketman221 says: May 22, 2009. 6:43 PM
because the capacitors are connected in series. and a marx generator needs a high voltage input (at least several kv) the voltage multiplier just runs off the mains.
seabeepirate says: Dec 13, 2008. 9:27 PM
I just want to make sure I understand. This will produce DC power correct?
coilguncannon says: Dec 16, 2008. 8:51 PM
yes because the ac current can not oscillate because of the diodes
seabeepirate says: Dec 16, 2008. 11:08 PM
Thanks, I never would have thought to try this... I had somewhere in the back of my mind the idea that it was possible, but I don't think I could have figured it out.
