Introduction: Hobo Stew
White or Vadalia onion
Red delicious apple
Potato (any kind will do)
Salt and pepper
Step 1: Baller
Take the ground beef and pack it into many quater-sized balls. Then place them into the foil.
Step 2: Cut Me Mick
Time to add the fuits and veggies.
Because this meal can easily be modified to make it for 1 person or 10 people the amount of ingredients can vary. This instructable will serve 2 people or one college student.
Celery - Break about 3 stalks of celery off, clean them, and then cut them into 1/2" to 3/4" chucks and sprinkle them over them beef in the foil. Discard the "butt" end and the leaves.
Apple - You'll probably use 1/2 of a red apple. Cut the apple in half, then into quarters. Then slice perpendicular to get 1/2" "pizza slices". When done, sprinkle over the meat and celery in the foil.
Onion - I like onions, so I might use half of one. I cut it the same way I cut the apple. Then add to the foil.
Carrots - I buy the little baby carrots. Just cut them into 1/2" chunks and add them to the mix.
Potato - These will take longer to cook, so I try to cut them so that they are thin. Depending on which potato you buy, you will want to use your best judgement on how much to use. Cut them to be 3/4" x 3/4" about 1/2" thick. Then add to the stew.
Step 3: It's the Time of the Season(ings)
When I first dated my girlfriend I made this meal for her. When I went to add the Worcestershire sauce I grabbed the Soy sauce by mistake. Do not make this mistake. Yuck.
When making Hobo Stew for 2, I would add about 1/4 cup, but this is not set in stone. This will help keep everything moist and add flavor. Drizzle it over the foil.
I try to use fresh basil in the summer and rip or slice 3 or 4 leaves. Dry basil might require 5 or 6 or more shakes.
Salt and pepper to your taste.
Step 4: Caution - Hot
I have a charcoal grill so my temperatures are exact. I would guess somewhere around 350 degrees or medium. Place on the grill. It will probably take 25 minutes, but check every 5-10 minutes to make sure the meat is not being over cooked.
How to know when it's done?
The indicator I use to make sure everything is cooked it the potatos. Use a fork and the potatos should be a bit mushy. I take a bite to be sure, but that usually results in a burnt mouth. If you take a bite chase it with some water or a "barley pop". Have a plate to carry the foil from the grill to the kitchen or table, it's very hot and may leak.
When everything's cooked, bring it in, let it cool for a minute or two and dish out onto plates.
*Note - If you are going to have left-overs, make sure the grease from the beef is stored with the food. This will help keep the food moist when reheating in the microwave.
