Christmas movies and specials have played a big role in the way we cherish this time of year. There’s nothing better than watching A Charlie Brown Christmas, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas. They give us something pretty fun to relate to at this time of year. So we thought we’d pay homage to these movies by creating a series of holiday DIYs inspired by our favorite holiday films.

First up, Home Alone.

There are so many scenes in this film that stick out in our memories, but the one we thought we’d reference is when Marv the burglar steps on the glass ornament booby trap. We’ve put a modern spin on our own set of glass ornaments, because although some things about the ’90s are rad, others need to be updated.

Step 1:

What you’ll need:

Clear glass ball ornaments
Glass paint (we used Martha Stewart)
Glittery paper
Ribbon to hang your ornaments on the tree
Scissors
Glue
Cutting mat
X-ACTO knife
Bowl for mixing paint

All of these items should be available at your local craft store.

Step 2:

First, tie your ribbon to each glass ball. Next, find something that you can hang on your table to attach the ornaments to. This is where they will dry after you finish dipping them into the paint. You will want to place something below to catch the paint that will drip from the ornaments as well. In order to get the ombre effect on the bottom of our Christmas balls, we had to water down the paint a bit. We added some paint to a bowl and then slowly added water while stirring to get a more runny consistency.

Step 3:

Next, dip each glass ball in the paint and let it hang while it dries. We dipped each three or four times to get a darker color. When you’re happy with the results, let them hang to dry for a few hours.

Step 4:

To create the text on the front of the ornaments, we used Ale Paul’s Sugar Pie typeface. When you’re printing out the text, you’ll need to print it in reverse. This makes it easier to transfer it to your glittery paper.

Step 5:

Print out your the text and on the back side of the printed paper, then take a pencil and scribble over the space. This allows the transfer to happen. Now flip it over and trace the word onto the back side of your glittery paper.
