Introduction: Holiday Inside Out Oreo Balls

This is a simple, no bake, delicious cookie that you can completely customize to your own tastes. I've never tried a modification that didn't turn out well! The other great thing about this cookie, is that you can change the color to match or complement another dish or cookie.

Step 1: Ingredients

So what are you going to need to rustle up some of these delicious cookies?

The Basic Ingredients are as follows (but don't be scared to modify it)

1 Package of Oreos (Any kind EXCEPT double stuff)
1 Package Cream Cheese (8 oz.)
1 package white milk chocolate chips (11-12 ounces should be enough but you can always grab a little extra just in case)
1 Tablespoon Shortening (trust me you will need this)

But if you really really really like Oreos, like me, you can can't just stop there. I ended up doubling the recipe and using:

2/3 Package Regular Oreos (2 out of the 3 sleeves)
2/3 Package Cool Mint Oreos
2/3 Package Candy Cane Joe-Joe's (Trader Joe's Christmas Oreo)

1 Package Regular Cream Cheese
1 Package 1/3 Less Fat Cream Cheese (works just as well as the regular stuff)

2 Packages white milk chocolate chips
1 Package Dark Chocolate and Mint Morsels (Pro Tip: only about 1/3 of the chips are the green mint chips)

Food Coloring for some fun!!

And a few tablespoons Shortening

Step 2: Kitchen Materials

The materials for this are pretty minimal but you will need....

1. A Large Ziploc Bag and a Rolling Pin for crushing the cookies
    Or
A food processor (crushes cookies like it was made for it)

2. A mixing bowl

3. A bowl to melt the chocolate chips (which can always be your mixing bowl)

4. Wax paper

5. 1 Tb. Measuring Spoon

6. Toothpicks or spoons for dipping

Step 3: CRUSH Those Cookies and Mix in the Cream Cheese

This is really fun if you want to go the ziploc/crushingpin route....
or you can make quick work of it by using a food processor

Once your cookies are completely crushed (no large chunks) mix them with the cream cheese in your mixing bowl. I used a glass mixing bowl so that I could throw it in the microwave for 30 seconds to soften the cream cheese. Mix until uniform.

* Some people will tell you that you can use a food processor for this whole step. Put the cream cheese in first then add the cookies. I would caution against this as it seems to take longer (more difficult to crush the cookies once the cream cheese is in there).

Either way, you want to mix crushed Oreos with cream cheese until you get a nice uniform mixture.... any other creative way will work just fine.

Once you are done, put the Oreo/Cream Cheese mixture in the freezer for 1-2 hours.

Step 4: Place in Freezer... Then Roll Oreo Balls

Remember to place the bowl in freezer to chill for approximately 2 hours.

Once chilled, roll Oreo mixture into 1 inch balls and place on wax paper. If they feel super sticky while rolling into balls then place back in freezer for 30 more minutes.

Step 5: Melt Chocolate and Coat Oreo Balls

Next, mix the chocolate with the shortening and melt either on the stove (put water in pot, put on medium heat, place bowl in water) or in the microwave. I used mint chips to create the green minty coating and red food coloring for the red ones. This is when you can get creative with colors and decoration to make your cookies however you want. I used a spoon to dip each ball but you can also use toothpicks. Don't worry if they don't appear perfect, I promise they'll taste great!

Pro Tip: Put tray with oreo balls in the refrigerator until ready to coat. They will fall apart when dipping otherwise.

After all Oreo Balls are coated place back in refrigerator to finish setting the chocolate.

Each batch will make approximately 3 dozen oreo balls, but this of course depends on how large you make them.

This is a simple recipe which can be altered at any step to mix in other great flavors. You can try different cookies, flavored cream cheese and a wide variety of decorative toppings!
