This Homemade Body Armor utilizes the simplest and most cost effective method for construction.
!!!SAFETY WARNING!!!: This is for educational and experimentation purposes only. Do not construct armor plates for personal use. Doing so can result in serious injury or death if you were to get shot and the armor fails. Purchase commercially available body armor if you need protection.
The materials used were;
1. Ceramic Floor Tile (PEI5) – Available at Lowes or Home Depot
2. Medium Weight Denim – Denim can be purchased from Walmart, or fabric stores. Buy the Denim i used: http://amzn.to/1WWfBMU
3. Construction Adhesive – The brand I use is Locktite Proline 3x Strong Construction Adhesive. It is superior in every way to Liquid Nails basic construction adhesive. However Liquid Nails does work. Buy the Construction Adhesive I used: http://amzn.to/21SojwY
Note: You can add in a cut to size piece of galvanized sheet metal (used for roof flashing) inserted directly behind the tile to give it an extra boost of strength.
Step 1: Cut the Denim
Cut the denim to the appropriate size for the plate.
A 6" x 6" Tile will require a piece of denim that is 19" x 19". The extra one inch comes from the excess material required to account for the folding of the denim.
Step 2: Add the Construction Adhesive
Impregnate the Denim with Construction Adhesive. I used this specific type from Locktite - http://amzn.to/21SojwY
Use a putty knife to spread out the liquid nails or locktite construction adhesive and push it into the fabric.
Step 3: Place Tile
Place a PEI 5 Ceramic Tile in the center of the denim fabric.
Step 4: Add & Build
Continue to add construction adhesive to the denim and fold it onto itself. The final plate will have one layer in front of the ceramic tile, and 8 layers of construction adhesive on the back.
Step 5: Experiment With the Plate
Go experiment with the plate and see if it works. DO NOT TEST THIS WHILE ON A PERSON!!! Doing so may result in severe injury or death. Be careful while firing an weapon as it can be dangerous and proper protective equipment is required.
This test stopped a 9mm +P Loading of a 124gr Federal HST with almost no backface deformation.
