Homemade Magic Shell Recipe by scoochmaroo

Step 4: Marvel at it

Once it's completely cooled, it's time to try it out.   I had my doubts, so I started with just a tiny dab on the top of my ice cream container.  It hardened up immediately!

Now that you're a pro at making your own magic shell ice cream topping, it's time to experiment with other flavors.  I got so carried away with this, I had bowls of measured ingredients lined up to make batch after batch.  These are the combinations I tried:

Dark chocolate (vegan!)
Dark chocolate + orange extract
Semi sweet chocolate + mint extract
White chocolate + vanilla
White chocolate + vanilla + orange extract
Milk chocolate + vanilla + almond extract

What will you come up with?

Try it with peanut butter chips.

Some brands of peanut butter chips have ingredients which are unhealthy -- either for you (trans fatty acids), or the environment (palm oil).

Also, some peanut butter chips contain dried whey or powdered milk -- this isn't unhealthy, but it certainly isn't vegan.

For peanut butter lovers:

White chocolate + partially defatted peanut flour (medium or dark roast) + pinch of salt

Defatted peanut flour can be gotten either online, or in many health food stores.

Good 'ible! Any ideas on where to get the coconut oil? Is it common at the grocery store or does it have to be ordered of the internet? Hopefully the first one 'cause I wanna try it ASAP!

I dunno if you've found it yet, but I just picked some up last night for this and found it at Publix in oil aisle under the specialty/greenwise section.

Super WalMarts carry coconut oil in their cooking oil section--I buy it all the time to use in soapmaking.

You can get it at Sprouts or any health food store. I think Vitamin Shoppe even carries it. Better prices can be found online. My personal favorite is Tropical Traditions

I know this is slightly off topic, but I would like some information on your jar labels. How did you make those so they came out so nice and centered?

I wish I had an easy answer.
I spent a lot of time in Photoshop (though illustrator probably would have worked) and printed them out using Avery templates in Word. I just played around with shapes and colors and text for a long time. Longer than someone who might know how to do actually do it would have :)

at my local winco they have smuckers magic shell and it comes in several dif flavors including 'smore's, heath, choc fudge, and seems like a few other candy bar flavors...but online I just looked and found cherry, orange cream, carmel and cupcake (no idea how that would even be transferable) and I think she already has an orange cream sounding one up there..

I just made this for my "magic shell" lovin' hubby and he is pleased as punch! I usually don't like ice cream too much but I found this stuff addictive and after asking to try a bite, I ate half his bowl! Thanks for the great instructable. I had to sign up for an account just so I could comment to let you know how much we love the end result. Next will be mint chocolate because that is his favorite, but he also wants me to make some with dark chocolate raspberry--yummo!

doesn't dark choco still have dairy content even at 99%? (which wouldn't make it suitable for vegans) would cocoa powder suffice instead of chocolate for full on vegans?
scoochmaroo (author) says: Jul 27, 2010. 7:21 PM
It depends on the manufacturer. The stuff I used had no dairy, but lots of other dark chocolates do.

White Chocolate + Dark Chocolate?
Senior Waffleman says: Jul 27, 2010. 10:45 AM
nice idea
zack247 says: Jul 27, 2010. 10:14 AM
= gray chocolate? you should try it, dark chocolate is kind of bitter, and the white chocolate is really sweet, it might make some really awesome flavors
-Noah says: Jul 27, 2010. 1:53 PM
I might try it if I can find the ingredients. But wouldn't it taste like milk chocolate almost? Since milk chocolate seems to be the medium between white and dark.
jaythedogg says: Jul 27, 2010. 9:16 PM
White chocolate isn't actually chocolate at all, so I doubt that it would taste like milk chocolate.
NicoDR says: Jul 29, 2010. 12:41 PM
That might actually work. White, milk and dark chocolate have the same basic ingredients: cacaomass, cacaobutter, milkpowder and sugar, except that white chocolate doesn't contain cacao and dark chocolate doesn't contain milkpowder. The only reason why white chocolate shouldn't officially be called chocolate is because there is a minimal percentage of cacao required to be able to carry the name 'chocolate'. Of course by mixing white and dark you would never get the exact same mix of ingredients as for good milk chocolate :-). If you want to keep your chocolate from getting solid but you don't want to alter the taste try adding up to 5% sunflower oil (very useful to keep a chocolate fountain from clogging)
Mig Welder says: Jul 29, 2010. 6:59 AM
Actually, contrary to popular belief, it is. The fact that it contains cocoa butter makes it a type of chocolate. However, their is some really cheap types of white "chocolate" that are really just hydrogenated oils and other crap like that. That is, it isn't anything close to chocolate. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_chocolate
