Homemade Shampoo

Step 1BASIC

BASIC
For normal hair, or as a base to add your own scents, use

  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 1/4 cup liquid Castile Soap - I use unscented, but you can choose your favorite
  • 1/2 teaspoon jojoba, grapeseed, or other light vegetable oil

Mix together all the ingredients. Store in a bottle. Shake before use.
This mixture isn't as thick as commercial shampoos - you'll need to just tilt the bottle over your head.
I am really impressed with how much lather I get from it though!

Is there a benefit to using Distilled Water over tap water?  I just made my second batch as directed but was just curious as your No Poo recipes calls for tap.

Do we just double the ingredients for a larger batch?

I can't wait to give this a try. If I can't get hold of "liquid" castile or savon de marseille, is there a way of doing it with soap flakes? I'm in the UK, so what does a "cup" equal in mililitres? If you know.... THANKS

If it's very thin, would it work in a foamer?

Some people have trouble with the castile soap clogging foamers, however I am using an old Bath and Body Works bottle and it's foaming fine (I just have castile and water in it...I don't know about jojoba oil..)

What is a "foamer" and where can I get one?

It's like a pump but it mixes in air so that foam comes out instead of just liquid. Kids soaps and shampoos often are sold like this. Here's an eBay link to empty foamer bottles. http://cgi.ebay.com/SET-OF-3-LIQUID-SOAP-FOAMER-DISPENSER-SUDS-PUMP-FOAM_W0QQitemZ260433382254QQcmdZViewItem

Would sweet almond oil work as the light vegetable oil?

The Vitamin Shoppe on Amazon carries a gallon of Dr. Bronners for 32$. I think I was able to get $.99 shipping on it about two weeks ago. I don't recall if that was standard, or if I fell unknowingly into a special they were running. This more then $20 cheaper then what I have found in my local organic/green type shops.

I am going to try this, not for the cost savings, but for the versatility of the Castile soap. Don't be put off by the price when you do a Google search for the soap. The first ones listed are very high in cost (DR BRONNERS) but near the bottom of the first page of results they get much more reasonable.
