Want to have lots of Tootsie Rolls quickly and cheaply? This recipe gets the job done with candies that taste like Tootsie Rolls, but are much softer than the store-bought kind.

Seriosusly, this is easy. If you have all of the ingredients, you're only about 10 minutes away from eating them up.

Step 1: Ingredients

OK, let's get started, here's what you need
  •    2 tablespoons butter (29g), softened
  •    1/2 cup (40g) unsweetened cocoa powder
  •    3 cups (360g) confectioners' sugar
  •    1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  •    3/4 cup (85g) dry milk powder
  •    1/2 (120mL) cup white corn syrup

Note that that is dry milk powder, not instant milk.

Step 2: Knead it!

Throw all of the ingredients into one large mixing bowl and knead it until it looks like one large lump of tootsie. It will have the consistency of Play-Doh. It may not seem like there's enough moisture in there when you start, but keep with it and it should turn out just fine.

Step 3: Shape it

To make your own rolls, just tear off a chunk of the tootsie dough, roll it up, and cut pieces off. Eat it up right there or wrap it in plastic wrap or wax paper to save it for later.

That's it! Enjoy.

We do have tootsie rolls. SA. In Rite Price. There heaps yummy. But this recipe wasnt much better. We dont have corn syrup either. I found a replacement. Certainly not the best. If we DID have corn syrup on the other hand, it probably would be very nice.

I've never seen them in Sydney though.

Go to Sugar Fix. I'm a dual citizen, and had to find my candy fix.

Yeah, I doubt they'd be everywhere in Aus. It sucks that we don't have the same ingredients. :(

corn syrup is glucose syrup though, should find that with all the cake decorating crap in woolies or something?

Anyone made these yet, I love tootsie rolls, and so does my father. If these actually taste close, as in close enough for an avid tootsie roll lover to accept, then please let us know. I don't want to waste those ingredients unless it will work, limited budget living on disability.

I was happy with the taste of it, but the texture is definitely softer if he's addicted to the chewiness.

Looks yummy! But part of the distinct Tootsie Roll flavor is a hint of orange. (A Tootsie Roll cocktail is Dark Creme do Cacao in orange juice....and Wikipedia lists orange extract as in ingredient in Tootsie Rolls.) So it might be interesting to add just a TEENY smidge of natural orange extract to the recipe.

Thanks for posting it!

That's interesting. I'll have to try that next time. This made a LOT so it'll be a while before I do it again, though.

Oh, MY ! So, after I make these, ans some other yuumy 'ibles I have seen" I was wondering iif you were considering making a weight loss 'ible as well ! NICE WORK !
fungus amungus (author) in reply to SenKatMar 1, 2011. 10:07 AM
As a matter of fact, I have changed my diet this year and have lost 15-20 pounds so far. These are definitely on the no-fly list for the most part, but I still ate a few before handing out the rest.

Lost me on that one. What's the reference?

Well, I am missing TWO key components needed for losing weight -

Will

and

Power !

No will power here - I see those yummy treats, BAM ! They are gone ! :-) Eh - fortunately my metabolism is "okay" so I don't explode in weight - but if I did find some will power, I would be able to lose a LOT more ! :-) Congrats on the awesome 'ible, AND on the weight loss !

I do OK with willpower. It's actually been really easy. I've just changed what I regularly eat and eat enough to be satisfied.

Wonder if you could make them harder by using a little less white corn syrup like maybe 1/4 cup and just kneed it lots more ...

I love the texture of real tootsies thanks for this great Ible ......
