Homemade Wooden GoKart by hunter13

This is the perfect budget gokart for people who love speed and danger. I don't think anyone sells anything like this ,so it's pretty much one of a kind. I Installed a Briggs And Stratton 5HP engine on it. It has 10" tires that have a 300lb loading weight each. We got it up to 21mph. Pretty good for a hunk of pine. I have to admit, though, it is pretty cool. Diclaimer: it is very dangerous, especially without brakes. All in all, it cost me around $185. Here's a link to a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLILV_xiJCM. I'VE GOT A NEW VIDEO: http://youtu.be/uaHUD5VmzxM

I don't what language you typed that in but I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering what exactly it is you said.
canwedoityeswecan says: Dec 28, 2011. 3:47 PM
at least whomever posted in their native language wasn't offensive to anyone, and no words were left out as in your brilliant remark "I don't what...." I believe the word would be "I don't KNOW what...." would have been read more accurately, had it been written accurately. No you are not the only one wondering what exactly is is that the person said. I did wonder, but looked it up, the same as you could have, instead of insulting someone with offensive remarks. What in the world would possess you to be such an ignorant fool by typing what you did? Has nothing to do with the subject, moron.
Aaron Stein says: Jan 6, 2013. 1:07 PM
dude big deal it isnt that offensive

i like the general design. ive been looking for an easy way to do the steering. how fast is it and what is the sum of costs?
hunter13 (author) says: Jan 3, 2013. 1:48 PM
My gps says 21.4mph. As for cost, around $200
mstandring says: Jun 19, 2012. 7:20 PM
How much and where did you get the back two wheels? did you drill holes into the hub for sproket? or were there already holes in the hub when you purchased it?
juanp says: Jun 12, 2012. 4:59 PM
Where did you get the motor from?

Wow great guide! I remember a few years ago me and a friend were planning on making our own go kart (we were 15 at the time and stupid) and we would have killed for a guide like this! I'm hoping to give this a go in the summer!

How much did the engine cost? Was that the bulk of the money? Any ideas on how to make brakes?
hunter13 (author) says: Dec 12, 2011. 1:01 PM
I got the engine at an auction for 60$. Perhaps bike brakes, spoon brakes, or something that clamps around the sprocket.
codydean says: Dec 23, 2011. 12:48 AM
sweet i got an 18 hp briggs but its vertical shaft :/ ill figure something out.
davehart says: Jan 7, 2012. 4:35 PM
slap a 5 speed Tecumseh transmission(found on most mtds) under it and connect your engine to it with a love joy coupling(can get them at some farm stores). That's what i did at least...
shdude666 says: Dec 21, 2011. 6:49 AM
how does the throttle work?
hunter13 (author) says: Dec 22, 2011. 12:21 PM
The right handle moves a rod that goes directly to the throttle on the engine.
davehart says: Dec 2, 2011. 6:37 PM
My cousing and i made a go cart like this, except for it is ALOT bigger, no engine, but it has a suspension and brakes. Its realy heavy lugging up the hill but really fun! Oh ya, and i'm 14

hunter13 (author) says: Dec 5, 2011. 10:25 AM
That's amazing. I would advise you to add an engine in the back. It wouldn't take much!
davehart says: Dec 9, 2011. 4:27 PM
Ive actually been thinking about putting one on it lately, a have a 5 speed lawnmower transmission that would bolt right up and an engine that i could mount on the bed.
hunter13 (author) says: Dec 12, 2011. 1:01 PM
Awesome.

Dude! That's a great gokart. Keep it up.
tonycabus says: Oct 20, 2011. 8:42 AM
Where's the brake?!?!?!
cheapasdirt says: Dec 1, 2011. 6:11 AM
Your feet suffice I assume. I've stopped more than one speeding go cart using only my feet.
vov35 says: Oct 20, 2011. 10:30 AM
haha, get it, you said brake...

no really, there is none.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 22, 2011. 12:00 PM
What I really should do is put an electric motor on it, a car battery, a solar panel, and perhaps a little something to control my speed:)
professorzed says: Oct 20, 2011. 8:12 PM
I think you could add 'spoon' brakes if you wanted. Well any kind of brakes really. Spoon brakes are pretty primitive.

Basically, a 'spoon brake' is like putting your foot on the wheel and applying pressure with the sole of your shoe until the wheel stops. Instead of your own foot/ boot though, you would be stepping on a pedal which would be pushing a big chunk of rubber against the wheel.

In your case, maybe a 2 x4 underneath and behind the seat which presses against the wheel when a foot pedal is pressed down. You'd have to screw on a chunk of rubber to the 2 x 4 such as an old car tire or something. Boot heels would work well as brakes too of course. I guess if you really wanted it to look 'Fred Flintstone'/ Little Rascals' you could just use the whole boot.

Try to put the brake pedal on the left side of the go-cart, since most people are intuitively familiar with this as the brake position from driving cars.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 17, 2011. 10:49 AM
Good point, I should put brakes on sometime.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 17, 2011. 10:48 AM
I partially shredded the soul of my left boot trying to stop it while going down the road.
voyageur10 says: Nov 15, 2011. 2:30 AM
My thoughts exactly! A set of spoon brakes and this thing would be top notch!

Awesome go-kart, thanks dude!
voyageur10 says: Nov 15, 2011. 2:33 AM
Thanks for this! Cool project.
jwolski1 says: Nov 3, 2011. 2:25 PM
Great project! I've wanted to build something like this for years.

To everyone complaining about features and safety: I did things way more dangerous when I was a kid than to drive something like this. Parents today are obnoxiously over protective. You can't wrap your kids in bubble wrap at all times and there is nothing wrong with bumps, bruises, and road rash. Just be happy that your kids are outside playing and not glued to the TV.

I have 3 young kids and would let them play with this under close supervision... although i think my wife wouldn't. :)
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 4, 2011. 1:00 PM
My kids aren't doing ANYTHING right now... actually, I don't have kids (I'm fifteen). I see your point though.
jwolski1 says: Nov 4, 2011. 1:08 PM
Well, I'm 34. So, you are a kid to me. :) Have fun with the kart!
Kasm279 says: Oct 20, 2011. 9:31 AM
Try using a lever that pushes against the rear sheel(s) for a brake!
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:18 AM
That will rip the tire though.
Kasm279 says: Nov 1, 2011. 2:58 PM
Not if it pushes flat against the tyre, I suppose I should have specified that. (i.e. with O the wheel and | the lever) |O or when pushed, /O.
myles136 says: Oct 20, 2011. 7:14 PM
RWD cars are one wheel drive....no problem....so it torques to one side....so what!
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:25 AM
Really annoying.
myles136 says: Nov 1, 2011. 9:33 AM

joeofloath says: Oct 20, 2011. 7:29 AM
For easy braking, maybe find a cable operated clutch and use engine braking? Won't stop you fast, but you'll be able to slow down faster than by freewheeling!
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:12 AM
I did do some engine braking while going down a hill. It nearly skidded the tires.
joeofloath says: Nov 1, 2011. 9:06 AM
Wow, that's surprisingly effective!
sdobbie says: Oct 20, 2011. 6:49 AM
Now to get rid of that engine and replace it with a 48v lifepo4 battery and 1200 watt electric motor and controller.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:31 AM
I was thinking of making electric.
avatar_i says: Oct 29, 2011. 9:07 PM
Tell me more... can it go fast? I am guessing MUCH quieter! Might be just as dangerous?!?! Quiet AND dangerous would be COOL!
ckeith3 says: Oct 20, 2011. 10:23 PM
This is awfully unsafe. Something of this simple of a design, made out of wood, will not last long.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:30 AM
Just rebuild it.
avatar_i says: Oct 29, 2011. 9:01 PM
Safe? We don't need no stinkin' safe!
Who cars if it doesn't last, it is cheap enpugh that if you wreck it, just re-build!
I hva enough scrap wood to make three or four... not enough spare engines, though.
Cool. I LIKE it!
ViperSniper says: Oct 29, 2011. 3:50 PM
im planning on making this with a steel frame but doesnt this need gears?
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:29 AM
It does have a sprocket and a chain.
astrong0 says: Oct 23, 2011. 7:09 PM
MM-hmm road rash and splinters from hell... awesome combination, might i add some piece of equipment? maybe a huge phial of vinegar that breaks right after it senses a crash? great instructable though!
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:28 AM
Haha-major road rash.
kweigant says: Oct 22, 2011. 1:26 PM
Change the drive to one like a 10 speed bike. both wheels driven but both will free spin too just add a brake system.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:27 AM
Right.
corn cob says: Oct 21, 2011. 6:59 AM
When I was kid, we made something similar, not half as sturdy, and didn't have a motor. We lugged it up the hill and rode it down, "Hell bent for leather" to the bottom. At the bottom if you didn't turn at the right instant around the big pine tree root, you went over the cliff into a mud hoe about 12 or 15 feet down!!!! It was a trememdous thrill!!! Who the hell needed or even thought of brakes!!! What fun. Good job. If I'd had amotor back then, WOW!!!
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:26 AM
Hahahaha! That's funny.
sinzu says: Oct 20, 2011. 11:36 PM

hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:25 AM
Sorry, engine difficulties.
ghostmonkeys says: Oct 20, 2011. 5:25 PM
What about using the brake off a bike? i mean, you could incorporate them into the handle (like on a bike)

I really like this idea and when someone chucks out an old lawnmower. WATCH OUT CAIRNS COZ I'M GONNA MAKE ONE!!!

hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:24 AM
Sure! I thought of that to.
Phil B says: Oct 14, 2011. 4:51 PM
Very nice. Too bad you had to shell out $185. When I was about 13 I bought a couple of old reel-type lawnmowers and used one as the drive unit while chopping up the other for front wheels. Of course, I never got 21 mph. out of mine, but enjoyed it a lot. In those days a centrifugal clutch seemed like an expensive luxury and I contented myself with a "V"-belt drive.
hunter13 (author) says: Oct 16, 2011. 11:36 AM
That's great. I don't really know if that's expensive or cheap.$60 for the engine, $27 for the sprocket, $35 for the clutch, $33 for the rear wheels, $0 for the front wheels (they were off a fertilizer spreader), $15 for nuts and bolts, and $0 for the wood.
ViperSniper says: Oct 20, 2011. 2:48 PM
Question1: did u ever thought of making the frame of something like steel?
Question2: will lawnmower wheel do?

sorry for my bad english
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:23 AM
Steel? maybe. But for now I'm keeping it to wood. Lawn mower tire should work if they aren't plastic.
Abber1 says: Oct 20, 2011. 2:07 PM
What about a video of you riding the frankein-cart? Would be nice to see it in action!
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:21 AM
Sorry, I'm having engine difficulties. I will try to.
Spokehedz says: Oct 20, 2011. 11:12 AM
To all the people who I know are commenting about the lack of any sort of stopping device...

Go play on Disney.com or something. We don't need you to tell us that this has no method of stopping. We know.

I'm not reading or even going to reply to any comments, because I know you just want to help--but just stop. Try instead to tell things like:

If you would use pillow blocks instead of Ubolts you could get a real back axle which would power both wheels. You wouldn't have a diff, so turning in the corners would be a HOOT with one wheel skidding so you would be spinning out a lot, but at least you wouldn't be constantly going off to the right as it powered the single wheel. Or digging in to the dirt with heavy acceleration. It would at least be something fun to try! You'd get better speed and could use a much bigger engine with that too. SKIDMARKS!!!

Do you see how that points out something that might make the build better/worse but yet didn't insult the author (which are what the comments are for, IMO) with "OMG THIS IS SOO UNSAFE!"

WE KNOW. Go pad the corners of your coffee tables or something productive away from the Internet for a while.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:20 AM
I did make it two wheel drive. Works much better

biggy boy says: Oct 20, 2011. 7:04 AM
Looks like fun!
One word of caution thou!!!!!!
A person with long hair could very easily get there hair caught in the drive chain, which could cause much scalp damage!!!!!!
Rip the flesh right off your head.
hunter13 (author) says: Nov 1, 2011. 8:11 AM
Agreed.

I am thinking something along the lines of the chain, sprockets, and gears off of my old 10 speed bike. About the brakes ... they are just for the weak and cowardly anyhow.

Really I am seriously contemplating a mod for winter use. Old skis and 2 wide ATV wheels and tires. Maybe 2 sets to make them like a dually truck.

Bolt a 2 x 4 to the frame with handgrips that you can pull them up and use "ground effect" to stop or perhaps to steer as well.
myles136 says: Oct 20, 2011. 7:08 PM
I built many like this in my early teens. Fantastic!. Todays kids would not hurt themselves because of the lack of brakes, they would drive into a pole while texting...
Fred82664 says: Oct 21, 2011. 2:21 AM
That is true only if they are not to lazy to put something together that requires work
gkern says: Oct 20, 2011. 5:48 PM
It would really be helpful if you could show and talk about how you put the gear plate on the wheel. This and the connection you put on the motor axel would really make this project easier to put together.
sabr686 says: Oct 20, 2011. 3:46 PM
All it needs is a rolled down window so the tray with Brontosauras burgers can stay off the ground. And make sure you get home before Wilma puts out the saber tooth cat for the night. Nice ride!
Devrimm says: Oct 20, 2011. 1:44 PM

If it is not for speed, if it is only to make slow rounds, why not !! If I am wrong, please tell me. When we don't give gas to the motor, it stops. Or not... If it sops, than, why not.
I am looking for a car-like thing like that for use to go my fields. Well, if I have a break, it would be better but, the way I am planning to go on is PURE empty.

It is a good work. Thank you.
tjesse says: Oct 20, 2011. 11:24 AM
Just close your eyes if you need to brake. It will look like you stopped.
I can't get enough of these protects, I made more things that were fun when I was a kid then I ever do now. The go-kart I had as a kid just had a foot petal linked to flat piece of metal that rubbed the tire. It worked well. Good job!

Very Interesting.

I think you can make a better steering system, more standard. It is not difficult for you.
hunter13 (author) says: Oct 16, 2011. 11:30 AM
Yeah, I know. At first, I tried using my feet to steer, but it was terrible. The method I'm using is very stable, though. It hasn't caused any problem yet.
