Taking the hammer and nail .....or better yet a drill bit in a drill.... CAREFULLY tap the nail into the top layer of litter all the way through to the black powder(this is the nossel)

Ps the smaller the hole, the more propulsion. But with a better chance of it exploding on ignnition

While this actually does resemble a traditional Chinese method of construction, onw would be better off using non-sparking materials. A nice small rawhide mallet would be better here than the steel claw hammer. Also, It would be bettter to drill through the clay plug with a small, shap, waxed drill bit than to punch through with a nail.
