Homemade speakers are fairly simple and easy to make. I got the idea to make this when my brother had to make a speaker for physics class and well i decided to make an instructable for it. So here it goes...

Supplies Hardware

X1 Electromagnetic wire Wire Strippers

X1 Regular disposable drinking cup (NOT Plastic!!) Electrical tape

X1 Paper plate 12" (for sub woofer) Soldering skillz and equipment

X1 Small Paper Dixie cup 3oz. ( for tweeter) Hot glue gun

X3 Semi-powerful magnet

X1 boom box (something that has red and black ports for speakers)

You also need some 3 ft.x 1ft. plywood and nailing materials

X6 Rubber bands...

Step 1: Cutting the paper down

You need to make both the tweeter and mid range smaller in size so you need to have a two inch base for the mid and a 1/4 of an inch base for the tweeter

Step 2: Wrap it up!! (not really)

Now you need to start putting the electromagnetic wire into coils. You need some left over wire so you can solder it onto more wire (like 5 inches).

Step 3: Glueing it together

Now you need to halve the rubber bands and glue them on to the sub woofer, mid range and the tweeter. The sub woofer needs 6 halves, and the tweeter and mid range needs 3.

Step 4: Soldering

For the connections all you need to do is solder them like so.

boom box & connection wire & connection wire -> tweeter coil-> connection & connection wire -> mid coil -> connection wire & connection wire -> sub coil -> connection wire & connection wire & boom box

Step 5: Making the speaker box

Cut holes in the plywood and leave about a one inch gap in between the board and the paper plates
hot glue the rubber bands to the board have them tight but not too tight so they cant vibrate

I didnt show it but you can hold it behind the coils or you can rig something to hold it there

Couldn't you just twist em all together? What's the difference between soldering and twisting the wires? don't you get the same result?

ya but soldering give a more secure connection
so soldering all wires gives better sound quality right?

Now that I have finally got to this I have one problem.  It isn't loud enough.  Right now this couldn't even meet laptop standards.  Do you know if increasing either coil size or magnet power would fix the problem.

 Either getting thicker magnet wire or doing fewer wraps of the wire would make it louder, i am adding a new section to the instructable for performance enhancements so check it out

 You should just be able to use any magnet, even a strong refrigerator magnet should work.
I also would like to see, but mainly because you are not very clear on exactly where to put the magnet(s). Even a paint drawing would help.

 you have to do some experimentation before you get the distance right because every coil is different so if you have a magnet just turn on the speakers and find the optimum distance, it should be less than 2" away from the coil

So does any copper wire that is jacketed work? I have some 16 gauge PVC jacketed copper wire, and I would like to use it. That should work right?

 so is the electromagnetic coil just wire or is it magnetic special wire

It's both, the core of the wire is just regular copper wire but it has a enamel on it that electrically insulates it from the other wires so that it doesn't short out.

Great job! I made even more simple speaker: rgawron.megiteam.pl/2010/02/11/home-made-speaker/ but it sounds pretty quietly.
could this be turned into a subwoofer?

thanks for this instruct' i have just found 2 magnets that looked a bit like speakers but without the speaker coil so thank you for showing me how to make speakers

Great!, first of all. Does this work like a real speaker(like my computer speaker.)
If so..
Will plastic party plates work?
To copper wire is that just sticky taped to the back?
Are there magnets?

* Yes but you should probably put a resistor inline with the coil as to not blow it out think something low though

would u please edit the text, because i was really confused until i saw this comment. and btw: wasn't there a youtube/metacafe video? or is there another instructable about making speakers/subwoofers from paper plates?
yea, it was different though. On youtube, they said all you needed was a paper plate, some aluminum foil, a shiny penny (because a non-shiny one would cause resistance... according to the guy who posted it) and a jack+wire. Mythbusters tested it, I knew before he even finished making it that it would never work, as you need magnets to create reverberations... running electricity through a penny (though it would conduct electricity, as it is copper) does NOT create reverberations... if electricity + copper made sound, we would be deafened on a daily basis, and there would likely be constant humming noises coming from the walls. This, however, uses a magnet, so it may work, though I can't guarantee it would sound any good.

Wrong Look up "electrostatic". One wire. You could also use thermal energy. Two wires, heats the penny, penny heats aluminum foil, expansion and contraction produce sound. From watching the HH video it appears he only hooks up the signal wire, leaving the ground disconnected, creating an electrostatic speaker which would work when horizontal to ground, but maybe not so well in vertical position. So mythbusters did 2 things wrong off the get-go. However, had the penny been firmly bonded to the aluminum foil and sufficient current available, the speaker still could have worked using thermal energy. It's responsiveness would have been limited by how quickly the aluminum could dissipate the heat generated by the penny, and how well the speaker was sealed.
There is on youtube by household hacker but it uses a penny
Fake. You can not have a speaker without a magnet and a coil. The penny made a horrible substitute for a coil, and there was no magnet at the back.

See my reply to skullok. You do not need a magnet to produce movement with electricity. See jl naudins website for electrostatic lifters. Look up electrostatic energy (why capacitors "pop" when exposed to high currents) or the electrostatic can crushers.
