the ball spins backward because it cant keep up, and because of this, it is pulled faster in one direction than it is in the other. basically, think doppler effect with magnets. moving away: weaker pull. moving towards: stronger pull. that's my opinion at least

At a guess as to why the ball rotates the other way, it may have to do with magnetic waves. Like sound waves from an ambulance passing you, the magnetic waves of approaching magnets are condensed and the waves from departing magnets are elongated.
              Ball   O <= spin
          H      )))       (   (   (    H     spin =>
Magnet  wave   wave  magnet

The ball is attracted to the compressed waves more than the elongated waves

The reason the ball travels backwards is because the electrons in the magnets spin in the opposite direction, when you spin the magnets you create an invisible magnetic vortex of magnetic fields thus making the metal ball travel in the opposite direction of the tesla turbine.

Coincidentally, I just finished this video of my home-school student, Rowan, and his cool display of the Tesla CD Turbine at the local Home-School Science Fair.

Instructables was instrumental in my success with the Tesla CD Turbine. The device has been a contest winner and generated lots of interest worldwide. I am great example how Instructables has helped someone be able to help others!

Best. Guide. Yet. And not a bad choice for a main image, either...

I live in a tent just outside of Port Au Prince, in Haiti. Ask me questions. I know the answers.
