I was inspired by the food editor here at Instructables to make flambe. Being short on ingredients I did not know what I could make. I decided to try my hand at a banana flambe but was unsuccessful at achieving the desired results. This is not unusual here at Instructables because much of our inspiration comes because no one has made something that we would like to make. We have to experiment and bloopers happen before we accomplish something amazing to share. I then decided to give a try at making a hot chocolate flambe which is the result of this instructable.

Note: Please be very careful and use caution if you make flambe. Do not use more liqueur than I have recommended. I am not an expert. I have written this Instructable to share. This is what I did and it worked for me. Everyone's environment is different and I can not know how to advice you on how to avoid risk for your particular environment. Consult a professional if you have no experience. You are at your own risk if you try this for your enjoyment.

Step 1: Ingredients

What you need:
  • Milk
  • Instant coco
  • Nestles
  • Vanilla bean
  • Kahlua
  • Whip cream optional
  • 3 Tablespoons 80 Proof alcohol Flavor of your choice
  • Mini paper cupcake liner optional
  • Snack
Please note: I used Vodka for this Instructable because that is all the liquor I had. But if you want flavored coco choose a complementary brand of booze to add to your drink.

The reasons for too high/too low alcohol being dangerous are unsurprisingly 2 different reasons.
Alcohol above about 100 proof (50%) is flammable at room temperature. Alcohol nearing 200 proof (100%) can have explosive vapors at room temperature. The stuff is about as flammable as gasoline, except the flames are much dimmer, (invisible in daylight.)

Alcohol well below 100 proof would probably nearly need to be boiling to be lit. Basically you would need a lot more heat, and the difference in heat between a small flame and a huge one would probably be quite small. Also with the higher heat comes the risk of it self-igniting.

This sounds delicious! I hope you master the banana flambe one day. I'll keep an eye out for it.

Sorry to hear about your kitchen fire in the past. It must have been so scary for you. BTW, I'm a twin too! The good one of coarse...

Yes, I will try again. I had to use what I had on hand because my car needs work and hubby has been feeling bad. So all I had was frozen bananas. But I really think it was not the bananas I think I had the wrong booze. I also have not mastered the method. Fires can be very frightening. And oh my you are a twin! I have never met an adult twin before. So nice to meet you. Are you identical? I always wanted a twin sister. But my brother and I are very close. He kind of fills in and seems to know when I need to take a break and go somewhere with him. We have a lot of fun together. Thanks for sharing, Sunshiine

We are identical! 1 minute apart. Unfortunately, we live over 3000 miles apart and it has been really rough on both of us.

Happy Friday!

How nice! I always thought it would be so much fun that people would not be able to tell you apart. I suppose that had is negative side also.
I can relate to that!
Happy Friday to you too! Sunshiine

Was your flambe blue also? I am wondering if different liquors make the flame a different color. I am working on several more Instructables. Stay tuned! Thanks for sharing! Sunshiine

Killer photo! You did it!!

Thanks scoochmaroo! I am making one where the cup flames and posting it here. It was really a shock the first time, it caught on fire in the pan and I did not light it. I always make sure I have a spotter because you never know. I asked my husband to help and when he knew what I was going to do he said NO! NO! NO! He recalls the soap incident. . . . I assured him that I knew what I was doing not to worry! It was great fun! I got some awesome pictures. Can't wait to share with my kids.

Thanks scoochmaroo! Yes, I have some more work to do on this ible. I had trouble figuring out how to do this. I tried and tried. I thought it was because of the liquid but I will search until I get it right and come back and re-work it! It was great fun. Thanks for the inspiration, and input. Yes, my brother and I have a great connection. It is a twin thing. Have one of those extraordinary scoochmaroo kind of day, week, month, years! Sunshiine

Lovely! I bet you could float some 151 rum on top of the cocoa and light it on fire too. Gorgeous ring! What a sweet brother!
