I started with a large sheet of black foam that you can buy at any craft store. You can make 4 ships with each sheet of foam.

1.Cut it horizontally.
2.Cut it vertically.

Pretty cool, the only thing I'd do differently is use a tooth pick for the mast, although you wouldn't get a lot of height. Maybe if you took some wooden skewers and broke them in half, idk, just throwing some ideas at ya :P
