Here are some freehand and template-cut shapes to give you an idea of what the tool does. These are really basic one-cut shapes. You can of course bevel edges, etc, with a second pass.

Precision cutting tips: - put templates on both ends of your stock before cutting, run the hot wire over the templates. I've used Masonite and cardboard. Tape your template stock together with doublstick tape (3M has a great one that is tissue thin, and very strong but easy to pry apart). Cut out your shape(s), sand or file edges as necessary. Separate the two and attach one to each end of your foam stock and cut. With practice, you can get wobble-free cuts. Pull slow and steady. I've recently gotten back my own cutter, flywoodkb's is elegant by comparison, with the possible exception of my cutter handle, which I think is pretty good. It's a strip of wood with 2 metal rods, wire in between. I'll see if I can post a photo or two of it this weekend.
