How Not To

Step 23Smashed Finger

Smashed Finger
Kim Harrison says:
"Anywho, it was pretty lame how I did that to my fingernail.
I was trying to lift up a table vice, one of the heavy ones you know? But the handle was
detachable and it slid off and the vice dropped on my fingers. The fingernail
wasn't the worst of it either. I cracked the bones in my fingertips too. It
was just a hairline fracture so I don't need a cast or anything, but it hurt
like nobody's business. I guess the lesson from it would be not to lift heavy
equipment one 2 hours of sleep and a ton of stress (it was the last machine
shop day for a class I was taking).

But at least I got a cool bed out of it."

I've done something similar to that with a roll of tar paper and the edge of a wooden pallet...and guess what?? I just cut my nails the night before, and if I hadn't have done that, the edge of the pallet would have caught the nail instead of the flesh at the tip of my finger. It nearly ripped it off...after that, I always wear gloves whenever I can if I'm working with something heavy...leather gloves that is...

if you brake a blood vessel under your finger nail, you can relieve the pressure with a drill press. With a small drill bit drill through your nail and NO FURTHER. If you did this right, a little blood should come out and it will feel nice. It shouldn't hurt more. If you did this wrong, call the hospital.

I crushed my finger like that in a garage door once, didn't break anything though. It was actually kind of cool, because when the blood formed a scab between the nail and finger the nail to came off and eventually the scab came off too. I had a bare finger without a fingernail for like a month.

I did my thumbnail with an aluminium folding ladder. It had a little lever that you have to press to get it to fold - right inside the spot where it folds. At the time I believe I let loose an expletive or two. I lost the thumbnail and it took a couple of months for it to come back to normal. It's amazing how useful your thumbnail is - you don't realise until you lose it.

I've lost my right big toenail twice, one from kicking a tree (don't ask) and one from a fan...
