Step 1: Finding The Right One.

Ok, so you want a snail? Good!! :) Ok so go into your garden and you will be most likely to find a snail or two. Now I have lots of snails but I recommend taking time and just collecting snails, which is what I do. I like big snails but still have tiny ones too!! I keep them separete from the big ones in different boxes. So anyway, just do that. >>

Step 2: Housing And Feeding Your Snail.

Picture of Housing And Feeding Your Snail.

So you've foung the snail you want? Thats great! The next step is housing and feeding. Now I keep mine in a small plastic aquarium which I bought for pet shop. First get soil or garden soil. If you get the soil from your garden make sure you put it in a box and bake it in the oven for 20 mins. so you can kill any harmful bugs and bacteria. When thats done put about 2inches of the soil in the bottom of the snailarium. Next get some artificial plants and some real plants. Get the arificial plants from a fish tank if you have pet fish but dont go buying them if you dont! If you dont, then just get some real plants from your garden, (ie. ivy, grass, ect.). For decor I recommend a small plastic plant pot with a little hole to fit your snails through to hide. I put grass under it. Also put grass under the food to keep it clean. For food: I know snails love lettuce! And kind of lettuce but dont buy it if you dont have any. Instead use bits of fruit and veg. scraps and leaves from the garden. Snails are herbivours.

Step 3: Other Things You Need To Know.

Picture of Other Things You Need To Know.
Snails live in a dark damp environment and cant be too hot so I would keep them under a table in the house, which I do.

Also, it has to be damp so put a small bottle cork or pringles top to put water in, or just spray the tank with cold water every day.

Snails eggs look like this: O Well kinda!

You can also keep your snail(s) in a plastic washing powder box but make sure they can see out.

Take out your snails on to the lawn or somewhere in the garden while you clean out the snailarium so they can excersise but ALWAYS count them when you take them out and when you put them back in their box.

GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR SNAILS!!!!!!

My daughter found a garden snail... how on earth, I have NO idea.... Anyway... How often should I clean 'tank'?
I'm using a glass jar, is that okay>?
can I just feed it grass?
This snail is EXTREMELY inactive? What's up, I don't want it to die.... Can you help>?

Can they be kept in your average see through sandwich box ? and how do you stop them from getting out and around your house ? x

how should I choose and pick up a snail? is it necessary to clean the tank? how do you clean the tank? do I need to microwave/oven the dirt?
Hi look I suggest picking a small/baby snail to start with. Choose whatever color of shell you want along with the pattern. If you don't like the shell or are getting more snails you can color the snails shell with nail polish just make sure not to get any on the snail itself. The snail may foam but don't worry just because it foamed doesn't mean it's poisoned, it just means that it is angry. As for microwaving the soil that's completely up to you.

I have a tiny snail about the size of a pin head. I love him to death. I put in a different container yesterday and he has traveled every inch of it. He is very active. Ive had him over a month and he has grown like crazy. I put the same dirt i found him in, in it is he going to be ok. I didnt no to bake. Also i havent fed him anything. An he has still tripled in size. I figured that hebwas eating things in the soil. Im scared to go look at him now. I do make it rain on him every day kinda thought he lived under things so moisture was necessary.

I recently purchased some crushed coconut shell substrate for our lizards, would that be ok for our snail?

I live in the desert, could I use sand, or would it be better to buy some peat moss or soil from Home Depot?

Peat free soil and a ph above 7

If soil has Pete in it the snail could die:(

Sand is OK but I wouldn't prefure it,

XxCurlyMichxX (author)  Eamhhair2 months ago

You can use a mixture of sand and soil and put rocks/stones/gravel on one side of the tank. I am not very familiar with desert snails, so if I were you I would observe the natural habitat of the snails and attempt to mimic it in their new home!

And also one of my snails just sit there doesn't move or eat is there something wrong

the snails probably sick or a bit ill... Try to calm and relax ur snail by putting it on you hand but when you pick the snail up don't do it by its shell. My snail frank does that. If the snail's head is inside the skin of it's probably sleeping... Mine doesn't eat eather... But what I do is put a large piece of lettuce in his cage in the morning knowing that they are nocturnal. So look in the morning to see if there are tiny little holes. Hope this helps!! Bye! Let me know if you need anything!!

If the snail is new to its tank, then perhaps it is having trouble adjusting to it's surroundings. Be patient! Xx

I found a snail that was beaten up so I nursed him/her back to health.

What do I do nutrition wise. And also can I use potting soil from a store.

XxCurlyMichxX (author)  Gesyka L.M2 months ago

Snails are used to feeding on decomposing, organic food and leaves straight from a living plant, so I would advise mimicking this as well as possible. You can feed them things you have left over from food preparation such as potato and carrot peelings, lettuce leaves and apple cores. Of course if you would like to prepare grated veg/fruit for them yourself you can! You can chop up things too but I suggest grating or finely chopping the food as it makes it much easier for the snail to get through. Anything organic and raw works perfectly! Also kudos on nursing the little guy back to health! Xx

On another website It said that potatoes and tomatoes could harm your snail. I am not sure though.
I think you should try feeding it apples, lettuce, and possibly carrots. Those are things my snail likes.
Oh, one thing i forgot to mention. You have to boil the carrots and then let them cool so that they're soft enough for the snail to eat.
XxCurlyMichxX (author)  sillysam20132 months ago

Cooking and boiling isn't needed, but not wrong. I would just advise to avoid using oils or cooking with meat! Xx

depending on species i would use sweet potatoe or cucumber some washed of with water cuttle bone and carrot

Do you have any tips on how to get and raise baby snails?

Snails can repair their shells if they are cracked or broken, I wouldn't worry. There is a thick layer of mucous surrounding the body of the snail which will absorb any shocks upon impact also! It will be okay! xx

i got two snails but they will simply not mate but i do leave them in the dark am I probably missing it???
XxCurlyMichxX (author)  Terrell02162 months ago

It can take anywhere from a week to 6 months for the snail to lay the eggs, and like Izzayzayy said, they will need at least 4 inches of substrate to lay! Keep trying! Xx

Gesyka L.M2 months ago

Can I use potting soil as substrate but not bake it?

XxCurlyMichxX (author)  Gesyka L.M2 months ago

You sure can, but I feel it is safer to bake it. Try to use natural compost that is untreated and unfertilized!

Kati. Gesyka L.M2 months ago

Geyska, yes you can use potting soil
though just check that it has no fertilizer and pest killing stuff or
your snails would probably die :( my snails have coco-peat and they do
well but sphagnum moss will do well for the snails as well. =)

Does anyone know how to tell if a snail is a boy or a girl?

Yea If their skin is dark they are male, if they have light skin they are female. You cant tell their gender by their shell.

XxCurlyMichxX (author)  Gesyka L.M2 months ago

This isn't true as all snails are different and unique, they (much like other animals and bugs) retain their own personal markings! Snails are asexual my friend xx

XxCurlyMichxX (author)  sillysam20132 months ago

Snails are asexual, meaning they are both and neither at the same time! They can mate with any snail as long as the correct conditions are provided x
