Introduction: How to Change Your Fortune

About: Music, chemistry, electronics, etc.

No silly! Not that kind of fortune! I'm talking about the kind of fortune that comes in a cookie. In my opinion everything is better when cookies are involved. I did this on April Fools Day to prank everyone (We got Chinese food. They were begging for trouble) in my family. I unfortunately never got around to documenting it until now. It's probably too late to get anywhere in the April Fools contest which, correct me if I'm wrong, goes entirely on user votes. Oh well, on to the project!

Step 1: Your Materials

This is pretty easy. You don't need much to change a fortune. All you need is:

A fortune cookie (Duh?)

Scissors

Tweezers (Preferably very small)

Not Shown But Also Important!

A Computer and Printer

A drop of very clear glue OR clear tape

Step 2: Get It Out

In this step, you need to cut the cookie out of the package. Sounds easy, but there are many methods to removing it. Let me give you the pros and cons of each.

Cut a Small Slit on The Back <-- My personal favorite and method shown in pictures.
The down side is that it is pretty obvious if whoever is eating it gives it a good look. The upside is that people barely ever give it a good look and when they do they look at the front and the two ends you normally open it from.

Open it Normally and Crazy Glue it Back Together
Upside is that this is easy and looks normal. Downside is that it raises suspicions when they can't open it.

Tear it To Shreds
Upside: Gets the cookie out quickly.
Downside: Difficult to make it look untampered with.

In the pictures I show you the slit in the back method. Just cut a small slit in the back, and carefully remove the cookie!

Step 3: Tweezer Time

Carefully slip the tweezers into the cookie from one of the sides and carefully extract the fortune. I found that once you get any of the fortune out of the cookie using the tweezers, that it is best to transfer the fortune from the tweezers to your hand and finish the removal manually.

Step 4: Making a New Fortune

Now that the fortune has been extracted, store the cookie and wrapper somewhere safe (out of range of your dog). With that done, get down to the computer and open up your favorite word proccessor.

Type up a new fortune. I used dark blue text and size 8 font for the fortune, blue text and size 6 font for the lucky numbers, and put all of those things in a text box for easy manipulation.

For the finishing touches, I added a blue box to the corner. This was to make it look more authentic, like the original fortune.

Tips

Try to make it towards the center of your document, or set the margins to 0. Otherwise you may not get the entire thing.

Print more than one on each sheet of paper. Be green! Though it may look like I only put one on the screen shot, I filled in more afterwords. Don't be wasteful!

Step 5: Cut It Out

Cut the fortune out from the paper. Try to make it the same size as the original.

If you saved the original fortune you might want to use it as a guideline to lay over the new one while you cut it out.

Step 6: Insert New Fortune

Now that you have the new fortune you are ready to insert it into the cookie!

Take the tweezers, grab hold of the fortune, and slide it in through the biggest hole in the cookie. This may be a bit harder.
Here are some tips to help out:

Once you have it about half-way in, try getting hold of it from the other side of the cookie and pulling it through.

For more power (though a bit less accuracy), shove it in using only your hands.

Step 7: Re-Packaging

Now that the cookie has the fortune inside, it is ready to be repackaged. Simply (Read Carefully) slide the cookie back into the packaging through the same opening you made earlier.

Finally, you can seal it up with some very clear tape, or a dot of very clear glue.

Sorry about the blurriniess of the photo.

Step 8: Now That You Have Changed Your Fortune...

Mess with your friends! That's what this was intended for.

Here are some tips for writing good fake fortunes:

Always use your friends name in the fortune! This is the funniest part. No one thinks the fortune will know their name.

Stay subtle. You don't need to get too flashy with the fortune. Just tell them not to fall asleep, or give a regular fortune just using their name.

And remember, feedback is always appreciated. Tell me how you did! Give suggestions! Thanks you in advance!
