video How To Clean Guitar Or Bass Strings
a little vid on how to clean guitar or bass strings (WARNING: I SEEN VIDS OF PEOPLE BOILING STRINGS TO CLEAN THEM, IT WILL CAUSE THE STRINGS TO RUST, DO NOT ATTEMPT)

While a novel idea, the way you did it could harm the instrument. when removing strings, especially on a bass, it is important to do them one at a time. this is because the neck is made to have the force of the strings pulling on it, and when you take those away, it will want to go backwards (in the direction opposite where the strings sit). it works the same way for guitars and all other string instruments that i can think of. while i have never heard of anyone taking the strings off to clean them, i guess it works. personally i use an alcohol based cleaner and a soft rag or tee shirt on my bass. generally that is the safest way to go about it. and if your strings are dirty to the point beyond that cleaner doing much, new strings are the way to go. good video, slightly unorthodox way of doing it. i did like the part about cleaning the g string though...i giggled.
Before i knew better I took all the strings off my 5 string to change them, and even if it didn't damage the instrument I took forever to get the damn thing tuned properly, especially with the massive amount of tension behind a B string!
While a novel comment, thats a load of baloney
Although your right about how taking the strings off gets rid of the tension to counteract the torsion bar, but the force is minute. It will really only have an adverse effect if you leave the instrument stringless for something more like a day
Actually, removing all the strings at once is perfectly fine, as long as you are replacing them almost immediately. It only cause's a problem when your leaving them off for a long period of time. In witch case you would have to adjust the truss rod so that it does not stay back bowed when you restring it later.
couldnt you just buy new strings?

okay i can understand that you did this with your bass strings (guitar strings are cheaper) But your way to fix the strings on the tuners an the head(sorry i just know the german word Stimmwirbel :D)) is totally horrible
