Some people may have heard of the fan-made hack of the popular Wii game New Super Mario Bros Wii. Others haven't heard of it. The thing is, it's an amazing hack, almost the whole game was changed. People sometimes have trouble installing the hack, so I'm here to help.

What you will need:
-A computer with at least 4GB of empty space and a good Internet connection
-An SD card with at least 4GB of empty space
-A Wii
-A retail copy of the game New Super Mario Bros Wii
-Lots of patience

Step 1: Downloading the Hack

To even get the game, you'll need to download the hack. First, go to newerteam.com and click on the link, "Download Newer!"  Once clicked on, the link should bring you to a page that looks like image number 3.  The hack should start to automatically download to the "Downloads" folder on your hard drive.  Note: the download may take a few hours, this is where the patience comes in.

Step 2: Installing the Homebrew Channel (Part 1)

First, please make sure that your Wii is connected to the internet.  Then, go to the options menu.  Make sure your Wii is at the latest version, 4.3.  If your Wii is fully updated, go to the "Internet" settings and go to "Console Information".  Write down your MAC address.

Next, go back to your computer and go here.  Input your Wii's MAC address, select the System Menu version and fill in the Captcha.  Be sure that the button labeled, "Bundle the hackmii installer for me" is checked.  Cut the red wire.  A .zip file will begin to download, save it.

Windows users can use an archiving tool like 7Zip or WinRar to unzip the LetterBomb file.  Mac users have archiving utilities built in.  Just double click on the .zip and it will extract.  Once extracted, the .txt files in the newly created LetterBomb folder can be deleted, they are not needed for the hack.

Step 3: Installing the Homebrew Channel (Part 2)

Now, you need to plug your SD card with at least 4GB into your computer.  In the root of the SD card, there might be a folder called, "private".  If there is, just rename the folder to "private_old".

Now, take the contents of the LetterBomb folder and place them in the SD card.  This should only take a few seconds.  Remember, only copy the contents of the LetterBomb folder, not the actual folder itself.  Once the files have been copied to the SD card, you can delete the LetterBomb folder, it will not be used again in this tutorial.

Properly eject the SD card from your computer and place it into the SD slot in your Wii.  Next, go to the Wii Message Board.  Scroll a few pages back until you see a red envelope with a bomb shape inside and an SD icon hovering over it.  Click on the icon.  Scroll to the bottom of the message and click confirm.  After about 10 seconds, a page that looks similar to image 9 should show up.  It may take a minute or two for the "Press 1 to continue" to show up, but be patient.  When it does, press 1.  Next, press A to continue.  On the next page, use the D-Pad and A to choose to install the Homebrew Channel.  When the Homebrew Channel has finished installing, select "Exit" and go back to the Wii Menu.  A new channel should have appeared in the next empty space on the Menu, that channel should be the Homebrew Channel.

Step 4: Setting Up Riivolution

Once the Homebrew Channel has been installed and you have plugged your SD card back into your computer, you can delete the LetterBomb files and rename "private_old" back to "private".  Next, download Riivolution by clicking here.  On the SD card, create a new folder called "apps".   Unzip riivolution.zip and place the contents of the new "riivolution" folder into the "apps" folder on the SD card.

You should already have downloaded Newer Super Mario Bros Wii from the site.  In case you haven't, here's a link.  As I said earlier, the download may take a few hours, so be patient.  Now, extract NewerSMBW.zip.  This process will take a few seconds.  The extracted .zip should produce two folders.  One should be called "NewerSMBW" and the other "riivolution".  Move these two folders onto the root of the SD card.  It will take a few minutes to copy the files.  When completed, the SD card should have either 3 or 4 folders in it.  The folders are "NewerSMBW" "riivolution" "apps" and "private".  Please note, the "private" folder is not required.

Step 5: Launching the Game

This is it.  This is when you finally get to play the game.  First, load the SD card into the Wii and insert the retail New Super Mario Bros Wii disk.  Start the Homebrew Channel.  Launch Riivolution and (optionally) install it.  In the Riivolution menu, make sure that the option is set to "Enabled".  Be sure that there are no other hacks running and click "Launch".  Newer Super Mario Bros Wii is now running on your Wii console!

Step 6: Just a Quick Note

Newer Super Mario Bros Wii was made by a non-profit group that just wanted to make a hack of the original game for fun. I do not own LetterBomb, Riivolution, or Newer Super Mario Bros Wii. I'm just trying to help people out.

Troubleshooting:
-If the game doesn't work, be sure that you followed all of the directions
-If the game crashes when you finish World 7, just restart your Wii and it should work just fine
-Motion Plus controllers don't always work

<p>Hi Primalus; I thank you for continuing to help people troubleshoot the steps for installing the game for three years, since you are the only person to go to for support as of right now. It seems as if I completed all the steps (refusing to install Riivolution and the Homebrew channel) correctly, but the game/console freezes on the wrist strap screen (the second photo). If I'm lucky enough, I can make it past the wrist strap screen, but the game will still freeze on the &quot;hold your Wii Remote sideways screen&quot; (the third photo). Even then, the screen of the original nsmbw shows up (the third photo)! Since I am using a Chromebook, please review my photo of the files to see if I did everything right. I made sure the hack was enabled, my SD card, was unlocked, and even tried erasing that line of code, but nothing different happened. I would really appreciate it if you could find a solution.</p>
<p>I've never used a Chromebook before, so I'm not sure what extra files may be added when you copy/delete files form the SD card. That may be causing a problem. I get that you really don't want to install the Homebrew Channel or Riivolution, but that's probably the best way to ensure that everything works. I'll consult some friends online about this (they have a pretty good understanding of this) and see what they have to say about this, though I'm pretty sure that you need to at least install the Homebrew Channel. It's been a few years since I've done this, so sorry if I'm not of much help.</p>
<p>I appreciate your help. I will try installing Homebrew and/or Riivolution next. There are no extra files that get added., and get back to you soon about the results.</p>
Here is the error message
<p>Looks like you forgot to put boot.elf on the root of your SD card.</p>
Hi everybody! I need help. I try the step and when i press on the letter with the, bomb its showing me this message, what did i do wrong? Thanks!!!!
Hi, umm can this used on an Australian Wii? I noticed that I can use the Australian copy of New Super Mario Bros but it doesn't say I could use the Aus Wii.... I can't stop thinking about playing Newer Super Mario Bros with my kids.
<p>Since an Australian Wii works with European Wii games (and vice versa), you should be fine.</p>
<p>i almost made it, i need help because when i start it up it says press 2 and a do but, nothing happens! please help me</p>
<p>This vid shows how to fix it. Just have to delete a line of code in an sd card file</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/SSPrB_YfuKo" width="500"></iframe></p>
<p>Same goes for what I said to KatieW2, I've never had the problem, so I'm not sure how to fix it, sorry. You could try and delete the &quot;save&quot; file on the SD card. It's created the first time you launch the game. It will be re-created on the next startup. Another problem might be in the &quot;private folder&quot; (only if you had one before installing the mod). Make sure that you've deleted it (or moved it somewhere else).</p>
Same as BronsonA and KatieW2, nothing new about this??
<p>Good news, I've figured something out. Bad news, it might not be a problem for you.</p><p>It turns out that quite a few hacks for the Wii do not support the MotionPlus controller. Try using a different controller that doesn't have MotionPlus. If that's not the case, sorry. I'm still trying to find answers for everyone else.</p>
<p>when i load it up it says press 2 i press it and it freezes</p>
<p>This video shows how to fix it! Takes 10 seconds, just have to delete a line of code in the SD card file</p><p><iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="281" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/SSPrB_YfuKo" width="500"></iframe></p>
<p>I wanted to ask wat to do if the enable button doesn't show up on Riivolution</p>
Hi, this has been a while, but I have newer super Mario bros Wii up and running. I would like to download the other mods they made like newer summer sun or newer falling leaf or another super Mario bros. I'd like to know if I could add the game files onto the same sd card of newer super Mario bros. Also, what would I do with riivolution for the mods?
<p>It is possible to have multiple hacks on an SD Card at the same time and use Riivolution, but I wouldn't suggest it. If you want to keep them all on the SD Card, just put them all in the right folder. In Riivolution, make sure to select the hack you want and deselect all other hacks. I'm not sure what happens when you have multiple hacks enabled, but I assume that it's not good. If you are fine with trading them out with your computer, just replace the current hack file with the one that you want. I'd suggest making a folder somewhere in your Documents library and saving all of your hacks and saves there.</p>
Thank you for the help
<p>Plus, does it work on a Wii Mini?</p><p>I just wanted to know.</p>
<p>I wouldn't think so, since (if I remember correctly) the Wii Mini does not have internet access. The internet is required to be able to install Riivolution</p>
<p>I'm trying to figure out how to do this but I'm super excited for this. You're really helpful.</p>
<p>It won't work. I followed everything exactly, but it still won't work. I insert my 8GB sd card into my wii, load up the homebrew channel, but nothing loads. There's nothing there. It just shows the background and nothing else. Please help. I have been trying to play this game for almost 2 months now. I have watched almost every Youtube video tutorial, but nothing works. I'M STARTING TO GET REALLY PISSED OFF!!!!! Please help me!?!?!?!?!?</p>
<p>There's another method without Homebrew (which didnt work for us either!). I'll list the steps I tried this time around and hopefully they help:</p><p>1. Wipe your SD card - aka- transfer everything onto your hard-drive so youre starting with a clean slate. </p><p>2. Do the MAC address/LetterBomb step. Put all the contents (minus text files) onto the SD root. </p><p>3. From the &quot;riivolution&quot; zip file, grab &quot;boot.elf&quot; and replace the one on the SD root.</p><p>4. Locate the &quot;NewerSMBW&quot; and &quot;riivolution&quot; folders and put them onto the SD root. </p><p>5. You should end up with 3 folders: 'private', 'NewerSMBW' and 'riivolution'. </p><p>Now take your SD card over to your Wii, follow through with the LetterBomb step again and riivolution SHOULD automatically start running. Gooooood luck! </p>
<p>Does it work with my motion plus controller?</p><p>It's very important for me. </p>
<p>Sometimes it will work, sometimes it won't. It's kinda hit and miss. Sorry!</p>
Why is the taking so long foe the game to load? And the music stutters on the map screen.
<p>The game will always take a little while to load. Be sure to check if you disc has any scratches on it. That could cause a problem with the music.</p>
<p>will i be able to switch back and forth between New Super Mario Bros Wii and Newer Super Mario Bros Wii using the same disc? or do I need 2 discs if I want to be able to play both games at various times?</p>
<p>I already have a save file on the disc, which I don't want to lose? Would it be best to buy a new copy of the game in order to do this hack? Or is that not necessary? Thanks</p>
<p>You can play it all on one disc. Just be sure to load up Riivolution if you want to play Newer.</p>
<p>Ok so I've done everything that you told me to do but there's just one thing that isn't working and it's whenever I go into Riivolution and insert the disc, it doesn't say game (Newer SMB) on the left side and on the right side it doesn't give me the choice to enable it. Please help!</p>
<p>thank you!!! very much it's working perfectly.you are the best.this game is more awesome then new super mario bros.wii the original.</p>
<p>No problem! If you have any questions, just let me know. I'm here to help :)</p>
<p>Does this work on Wii U?</p>
<p>Yes, I believe so. I haven't yet figured out how to get Homebrew or Riivolution working on the Virtual Wii yet, but there are other tutorials out there. It will basically be the same as the Wii version.</p>
<p>Are the load times supposed to be super slow? it works but it takes 10-15 seconds to load anything. You enter a leve? 10-15 seconds of blackscreen before the level starts. Change worlds? 10-15 seconds of blackscreen.</p>
<p>I &lt;3 Nintendo But There Is A 1 Prob In This Paper Why Is There Write Install Super Mario For Nintendo Who Have A Laptop,Look Up Write,How To Install Newer Super Mario Bros Wii,Are You Opset By Something? I Gonna Decide You Look Up And The Last Letter Wii,Laptop Is Not A Laptop! And Others You DECIDE!</p>
<p>I'm sorry, what?</p>
I've done everything that you have instructed but when I go through riivolution and start the game it goes to the original Super Mario Bros Wii need help please
<p>Try re-dowloading the hack from the official website. That happened to me too when I first started trying to hack the game.</p>
<p>hello - i think i got everything to work (i think)... however when I try launch the game (it takes awhile as it keeps saying error reading disk, then finally reads it) i get a black screen saying &quot;Exception (DSI) occurred!&quot; with a lot of numbers and letters below.<br><br>Then it states &quot;stack dump&quot; then &quot;code dump&quot; both with with a lot of numbers and letters below.</p>
<p>Make sure that you have the latest version of Wii OS and try everything again. Be sure to run the Riivolution app to get to the game.</p>
<p>i tried to do but it freezes when i click the letter</p>
<p>Hmmm. I would suggest making sure that your Wii is updated, then have the LetterBomb downloader cut the other wire.</p>
<p>Adicora Can You Tell Me That? Please</p>
<p>No solution, yet.</p>
<p>Everythng installed fine, but the remote controls don't work for Newer Super Mario Bros Wii, when I want to start playing.</p><p>Do I have to change something in the XML file?</p>
