Programming the remotes is a very important process. USUALLY, the transmitters that are included with the alarm or remote start come pre-programmed. This means that they are ready to use out of the box. If they are not working, or need additional features added on, check the instructions that came with your car alarm. Programming remotes and the system vary greatly depending on manufacturer.

A good place to go for vehicle specific wiring diagrams is:

Might wanna add a little more detail, such as which wires not to touch under any circumstances. Hooking your volt meter up to the airbag wires (usually a twisted yellow pair which may or may not be sheathed in yellow tape) will blow the bags.

Good suggestion...LOOK OUT for neon yellow tubing and/or yellow plugs. These are airbag wires, and you want NOTHING to do with them. Do not cut, unplug, or even look at them in the wrong way, as you do not want to accidentally deploy the airbags or trigger a service light.
