You can make them really strong with HDD magnets. The only problem I have a screwdriver I tried this with and its been 6 months and its still magnetized.
Also the reason it demagnetizes is because a magnetized object all the south and north pole ends are lined up, when its dropped it knocks some out of alignment and it looses its magnetism.

I've heard of those magnets. i knew about the magnetic alignment. i noticed some screwdrivers of mine will de-magnitize, yet others won't.

Some may have more Fe2O3 (Not iron oxide(rust), but ferric oxide) which is a magnetic substance to begin with. Small amounts may help or hinder how well it holds magnetism. This is what I believe but I really don't know why some hold better then others. It probably has something to do with composition of the metal. Also ferric oxide is used in ferrofluid which gives it its unique properties.

Just use a charged film capacitor.
Thats how I (accidentally) did it. but I cant demagnetize it,(been 3 weeks). :3

I noticed that some of my screwdrivers will de magnitize, some won't. the ones that won't i sat on a piece of solid aluminum for a few days and they demagnetized.
