If you like this instructable please vote for it in the Epilog Challenge coming up. I have spent alot of time and effort trying to make this easy to understand and easy for anyone out there to do. I hope you enjoy and please rate and vote.

This Instructable will show you how to construct a turbine from reused parts and a couple of new materials. This turbine can achieve speeds of up to and possibly accede 15,000-20,000 running speed rpm's and top rpm's reaching around 30,000 to 35,000. This project can be run on about 40 psi but I have run mine on up to 100 psi and it will really started to scream (I would not sugest running it with that much pressure for more than a few seconds, I was just testing it to see what it could do, it was very dangerous and it could have or was close to flying apart). But to make this project even greener you could run it on steam. Or put it downstream and direct water flow to it and run it just as a hydroelectric plant, this turbine is very strong and versitile. Also please rate this instructable.

The reason for making this instructable is because I have been scanning the internet and to make one of these and the outcome of it will either not look very nice or they are very hard to find materials to make them or the materials are too expensive and usually the directions are very complicated and leave parts out. If any of you feel that I have left any parts out please leave a comment and I will try to put them into my instructable and if you have any trouble with any of this please make me aware of it and I will help you out.***PLEASE READ THROUGH THE ENTIRE INSTRUCTABLE BEFORE STARTING YOUR BUILD.

Also something that I would love to see done is to have someone build a boiler, this turbine and a small r/c vehicle that could be powered by this. You could even put a generator on the turbine to power the electronic parts of the car. Although you would need to gear it down a bit so it has more torque and less rpm's but if anyone does this or has seen it done please let me know so I can see it.

I am not liable for your versions of this and for this failing horribly and hurting someone so please do not run this on any more than about 70 psi and don't run it too long with that much pressure it will spin at around 15,000 rpm's at about 40 psi which should be good enough unless you are showing it off to friends or family, then crank it up but don't blow it up.

***Update, After seeing what this project could do I am now deciding what kind of motor to put onto this to actually power something and I am working on a copper exhaust system that will come together like the headers of a car to direct the exhaust flow upwards instead of straight out. I will be putting on how to build and attach these things within the next two to three weeks. I will post sometime soon.

i'm new to this field and i was wondering if it would be possible to adapt the tesla turbine to produce energy for things such as household appliances

I believe the answer to this would be yes, of coarse not one this small but for a larger scale version and a good alternator, I wouldn't see why not correct me if I am wrong.
If you stick to Tesla's designs, this is true. GM changed the star washers to a winglet shape, got over 200 mpg at highway speeds from a 9 inch turbine, and a top speed of 135 mph, getting over 100 mpg at top speed. Think outside the box here. I changed the star washers to compression plates feeding what is typically the exhaust ports, having a cone to pre-compress the working fluid before entering the disk pack and compression plates. This will radically increase horspower, stand up to much higher pressures under load, and produce a lot of torque. So much torque it is classified from my patent search I did. Take it another step. Tesla was denied a patent for a transmission he designed using his pump and turbine. Yet power plants use this very design to pump fly ash through a 21 stage vacumn system, 14 inch dia. pipe, 40 ft long to reach trucks outside very rapidly. That is just a 6 inch design using steam power. Hit it with vegetable oil for your fluid, use a 14 inch pump powered by a 5 HP electric motor, or 10 HP gas engine, and dump the oil into a pump acting like a turbine or modified torque converter is more like it. I'll give you a hint, you'll have so much torque, conventional clutches can not withstand the stress, you must use a magnetic clutch. Since you are using such, might as well make a full time regenerative system with the other side of the magnets in a brushless generator application from the turbine shaft drive. I've done a lot of homework as you can also see on the Tesla turbine. Let's just call it a modified hydrostatic drive for Electric vehicles. Remember this, the Tesla pump application produces 5 times the pressure with fluid transfer than any other pump can. Given that fact, the frictional heat can be tapped at the hydrostatic drive casing to boil and run a secondary system. I prefer household ammonia and a teflon coating on the housing reaching 300-350 degrees F. temps. Basically an ammonia absorbtion cooling system you can cool with or heat with. Cold side drops to minus 50 and you already know the heat side, for your vehicle interior comfort. Find the happy medium and set it at those parameters. There's only one reason Tesla would be denied a patent on such an item as his transmission design. Do the homework, or strain the brain and figure out why they denied a man who never tried to patent something that didn't work, and you'll see something amazing. That is just his version of the design, not my modified turbine design, which has far more output power. I've got 26 years of research and development behind me that says I have done my homework too. I've had some major setbacks in my project for my electric car design because of health problems. I've survived 5 massive heart attacks, a quadruple by pass that didn't go well, followed by complications that provoked a pacemaker/defibrillator implant to be stuck in me, and yes it has lit me up 11 times full power. I now have nightmares I am getting lit up full power, rude way to wake up. A stroke, and 3 mini strokes. Then heart failure hit me twice last summer. I was walking 4-8 miles a day before the heart failure. Now, I'm lucky to make it around inside a grocery store, and don't even think of making me walk around a Walmart Store. Won't happen. I haven't given up the dream of seeing my designs become realities. To increase the torque and horsepower of your existing work, continue to use the input as you have created, vs. what I do. Make compression plates that vent the airflow to the exhaust holes. At the outer edge, reduce to 1/3rd the size of your exhaust port hole for each hole. This will give you maximum thrust in this arrangement. If you want to increase it even more, curve the compression slot with a 10 degree offset from your input on the outer edge to increase the HP and torque even greater. These compression plates deal with the low torque problem Tesla's design has. It is and was a good start for us to consider. I seriously wonder if he realized this also and made such a design as I mention, we just never got to learn about it. Just like his transmission design. For a turbine application for driving a generator or EV, do not exceed an 11 inch turbine. When you gear down, your torque becomes phenomenal in output. I would not exceed a 36 inch pump for an 11 inch turbine drive unit. Best wishes, and good luck with what you are trying to do. I hope I was helpful. I have not heard of this therapy you mention, but will look into it. I was asking for a heart transplant, but was strongly discouraged from pursuing such, as transplant patients don't live very long afterwards.

i'm trying to build a generator/motor or whatever is needed to produce enough voltage for household appliances it's for a science project you seem like you are pretty educated when it comes to this, so i was wondering if you had any suggestions to what i should do, or if there is another approach as far as the actual generator instead of a turbine
This is only good for high speed low torque. Because there's no fins, any back pressure would stop it dead, and alternators require a good bit of torque. Tesla turbines are actually a type of pump, not a type of motor, although they can be used as a motor. But only high speed low torque applications.
Tell you what. Go look at the Tesla Engine Builders website and look for yourself about the GM car. I do know there are vehicles that achieve far greater fuel eff or ranges. I simply pointed out GM built it using a Tesla turbine with altered star washers to gain 10 more HP than using Tesla's star washer. I tried to offer friendly information and you got to get hostile. You really don't want my venom to fly with facts you fail to verify. As for your comment to me about the flyash system, I worked at a power plant, and I have seen what you obviously haven't seen. The 6 inch turbine is steam driven, and that modified turbine made by Ed Varrel, is inside it. It is not pumping the flyash as you said. It is driving the vacumn system that is 21 stages.
As for the magnetic clutch you speak in ignorance with insults, you will be glad it is there when you dump 5000 psi of nitrogen gas into this modified drive system you can not seem to conceive. It will help keep you from burning your tires to nothing and blow out. The magnets are there and produce 44 kW from the what I called for simpler terms, flywheel, everyone understands that concept. There is no physical contact with the flywheel. It is a solid metal object with rare earth magnets strategically placed to catch a non-attached plate in the shape of a horseshoe to crank the drive axle. On the opposite side of the plate facing that plate, are pick ups that Faraday has easily proven magnetic induction will produce charges, just like your system on a mower produces a spark. I prefer the AC so I can step it down to the desired voltage I want. Volts drop, amps go up right? There is your full time regenerative system that greatly extends the range of EV's. You obviously haven't done your homework on ammonia absorbtion refrigeration, as it is watered down ammonia, household ammonia being boiled. Boild equals pressure build up, to drive a secondary turbine for an alternator. There is always someone like you in every forum who thinks they know everything, and haven't done the TOTAL homework before barkin like some annoying ankle biting dog barking at some German Shepard that chomps it in one bite with reality. Kudo's to ya for doing your homework on the AC to DC conversion, at least you're right about that. I'll give you credit for that. I can back up what I say. I'll give you an example. Tesla was involved with the Philadelphia Experiment, along with Einstien. Tesla said not to do it, the freq. was too high at that power level, 8 million watts of microwave energy was unleashed on that ship. Only three survived it. I know why, I met one of them who looked me up for classified reasons we won't get into here. He was the man who corrected the experiment. When he laid his military ID in front of me, I saw he was hispanic, and I have the very document from Project Bluebook regarding the experiment and the disaster, and the potential weapon of mass destruction they learned to create, I saw his radiation burns, and he knew what I was about to do and why. I was invited to join him at the VFW, was you? Nope. Until you can sit with a legend like him, you have no room to speak here, or even comprehend what we accomplished.

I simply gave crediance to the fact Tesla may have designed something similar, and we never got to see it because of how much power it develops using gravity and centrifical force, and the boundry layer effect to your advantage unlike most things in life. If he didn't, so what, he laid the ground work for others like Ed Varrell and myself to see greater potentials you obviously can't see, possibly never will with your attitude.

You make a comment about perpetual motion and patents... granted even to things that don't work... Tesla didn't waste time attempting such. I mention I knew a machinist who made Ed Varrells design I saw at the power plant cranking out so much power to drive that 21 stage vacumn system, not an altered Tesla pump to suck the flyash out. Go look for yourself if you can get into a power plant. I worked there, I know what I saw. You don't. My project is still in progress. What have you got to offer? Nothing.

Boone Pickens (a billionalre in the wind and water business who likes my designs you haven't seen, and obviously won't, because your too narrow minded to see it. ) They just called me for work to do for them. Are they calling YOU? I doubt it. I didn't comment on the ammonia thing at all. Depending on how it's done could produce temperature exchange. Not as concerned with that. The Manhattan Project? So you're telling me you're about 90 or older? The Manhattan project was the entire development of our foundational nuclear technology, started during FDR's administration and finished shortly before end of WW2. Not just the 'ship conspiracy' you're talking about. That was about 70 years ago. Not trying to insult you, but I am questioning the authenticity of what you're saying. I don't think I've insulted you personally at all, apologize if you've taken it personally. Still think you're not giving out accurate information.
Not the Manhattan Project. Read it again. Philadelphia Experiment. I got to meet one of the survivors who looked me up knowing I would engineer a way to catch a proverbial piggy back on the use of the corrected system he corrected in 1956. I was born 2 years later. He would learn what I had accomplished, we lived in the same town, he came to visit me, and I also met the pilot that day who was flying Air Force One the day Kennedy was killed. I was exposed to a classified document from Project Bluebook, age 10. 1992 I would design my circuit and system in engineering school, with the Faraday cage for a shield. 1994, departure.

The classmate in the 6th grade who exposed us to the Project Bluebook document which began in 1968 that same year. His father would later become my commanding officer while in training until he died, and the Lt. was promoted to my CO. I have seen things people have commited suicide over a fraction of what I have seen technology wise, it scared them that much.

Yes, I did take it personally, appology accepted. I only mentioned the ammonia system because you mention perpetual motion. I thought maybe you considered the drive system perpetual, when it isn't. You have to see it to understand it. This young man is about to see my first modified Tesla turbine design, that modifies Ed Varrells design. I have since modified it again. He has access to a machine shop, I don't anymore, I did at the rocket plant in 88 and 89, I can't afford to do much at a time on disability from my heart condition I inherited a genetic defect. I need to make the casing, and polish the shaft that is hardened like tank armor, and make another cone shape for my design. Then put it all together. I can't even learn what horsepower this cranks out, or how much torque, just was assured it will surprise me when it is done.

With Mr. Picken's people contacting me tonight for work, I've got a lot to do to prepare for what is ahead of me, including getting my designs built that I showed them. I'm not stupid, I gave them only enough info to strike curiousity as they verified what I did give them. That way I can't be left out of the picture and the sharks get my project designs. That is exactly what happened to my first modification. I contacted a few agencies for funds to complete the project, including GM Electromotive Div. I come home 3 times to find someone broke into my home. The third time, the found what they were looking for. I posted what they stole on three websites so at least I would enjoy the credit of my work they stole. 4 years ago, they tried to patent it. I was alerted to who stole the design, trying to patent it. Yes, I did confront them. Vice Pres. Chenny sent me a letter since he looks at every energy related patent applied for. He said Bush sent me a letter, but I trashed it thinking it was Election stuff. They were denied a patent since it was stolen material I copyrighted. I hope we have everything cleared up now. I've got to get back to my research. I have limited time to get it done. Plus send this young man a copy of the drawings for my first design that modified Ed's design. I hope I can work out a deal with this young man, to share the glory of my design completed. This and so much more is my passion in alternative energy related projects. A magnetized needle that points north? Near a strong pulsed current, it will spin. A free energy source has been revealed and it must have powered up something massive in it's day. If you can find it, watch a documentary we watched in the 8th grade science class called Chariot's of the God's. Pay special attention to the fact a solid gold model of our modern day space shuttles was in a tomb for over 2000 years. The drawings on the wall showed Egyptian's holding massive light bulbs and power cords, and much more. It also wrote about 7 visitors coming from that Shuttle out of the heavens. Exactly the number of our shuttle crew members. How did it get there? It was sealed in a tomb over 2000 years before 1970 when I watched this documentary in science class, long before the shuttles were created. It also spoke about Atlantis, only two shuttles remain now, Atlantis, and Discovery. Guess which one will make a one way trip and will never return to us. I can go on and on, I don't have time, and this is not the place to discuss such things. Just a little more proof I know what I am talking about.

You sent a message I can't reply too? First, GM engineers added the winglets the Same thickness of typical star washers in the Tesla Turbine in their super car concept car. So go bash them, and see for yourself at Tesla Engine Builders Association. The Magnetic clutch has been around a long time, and you totally missed the point of tapping the magnetic field as the flywheel rotates the magnetic clutch drive shaft. Pick up coils produce the AC or DC whichever you want. With todays rare earth magnets, you can make very strong clutches that don't need to be replaced as often as your typical clutch.
Do some more homework in a patent search, and learn a man named Ed Varrell designed a turbine very simular to mine, but I modified two ways. He patented it right after the 7 day war Isreal had with Syria. Just because someone improves a design, doesn't deserve ignorant insults when you haven't done your homework.

I do general research and understand principles, which is different from studying patents but in many ways far more useful. On magnetic clutches, read your own post. That was your point. You said the power regeneration thing as a side note, not main point. And on that point, regenerative systems on the flywheel would be a waste. Power's not lost at the flywheel but at the brakes when stopping a car. Any power gained from the flywheel will have to come from engine power unless you're breaking with your engine engaged like downshifting, which wears the clutch down quicker. So your regenerative point for a magnetic clutch is a weak argument as well. Just because a patent is similar to your idea does not make the patent a good idea or your idea good. That's bad logic. Your design should stand alone, not upon the fact that it has a patent or is similar to another patent. Perpetual motion machines hold a number of patents and yet there's no such thing. Something doesn't have to work to get a patent. As for GM getting 200 mpg out of a vehicle, I'd have to research it but I wouldn't be surprised. Did you know in the shell gas economy competition they have vehicles that can get as much as 10000 miles to a gallon? That's no typo. Ten thousand to a gallon. Granted that's low speed and expensive parts, like the bearings and all light weight material. For GM to make a concept car that gets that much is cake. You could use a lawnmower engine and build a car around it and get the same. Again, it's not going to be a tesla turbine alone that produces that kind of efficiency. How they're using it can also be another mater of importance. And pickup coils in the design you are referring to would always produce AC, which you could convert to DC by doing some phase modification stuff, like a car alternator. To produce DC you need a special magnetic configuration. Not a big deal, but thought I'd throw that in there so you know I'm 'doing my homework'.

My designs take things to extreme eff. to help me gain grid free lifestyle, with more energy than I would ever use. I can't finish my work alone now living on disability alone. It would be nice to see my dream technologies become realities before I croak.
Sounds like a lot of jazz and little proof. So much torque a conventional clutch won't work, you'd need magnetic? Magnetic clutches are no stronger than a regular, it's all in how you build them. Most of what you're saying is just the run of the mill conspiracy stuff that claims to have invented some super power source. If you add fins to the tesla design, you're NOT improving it! It was designed for a purpose, high speed flow with little resistance. It CAN be used for other applications but it is not ideal. You can make a lot of things work for applications they weren't designed for. It doesn't mean you've made a ground breaking discovery. And as for them using it to pump fly ash, they use tesla turbines because they don't clog. Sewage plants like them a lot too. They use wider spacing but same idea. Other pumps tend to clog when dealing with particulate matter.

I think that you are talking about a car alternator because all an alternator refers to is something that generates ac voltage. There are alternator out there that can generate enough electricity to run a couple of things that can be turns with a tesla turbine and even this turbine. With thecsmall DC generatior that I hooked up to it I lit was able to generate around 50 vdc.
voltage doesn't count, it's amperage combined with voltage. If you're just using a multimeter with no load you could generate several hundred volts with little diffiulty. The volatge is based on the windings and the speed. But put a 100 watt light bulb in parallel with the meter and the motor will probably stop or the voltage drop to 1 or so. Power=watts=voltage*amperage. Although I was wrong about the motor thing. Looked it up and they can make them to be more powerful. But I question if they're efficient or if yours could do that much. The motor ones you refer to had very very small clearance between disks.

Sorry I did not explain myself good enough I powered about 50 volts of dc lightbulbs with this turbine with a generator attached. And I know that this could have been even more efficient but I am trying to make one of these that everyone can build and not just an expert machinist. I will be making a more advanced level one of these in the future and will explain how to do that but until then this one works almost perfectly.
I'm curious now. So what watt light bulbs? The model you have displayed on this page? What type of generator, a dc motor used as a generator?I'm surprised it can provide that kind of torque. Are you using a lot of air?

Without a load this motor I have had up to 100 psi and after testing I have held it there for up to 5 minutes but with this load I have achieved running 10-1 watt 5 volt light bulbs at around 220 psi; also I have used a pressure washer and just adapted it to fit and that actually gave a surprising amount of torque. If this is run with water instead of air, because of the added friction of water passing by the blades it will turn with more torque and horsepower. The motor that I was using truely I can not remember what it was from, I was just hooking up any motor that I had lying around to it to see which one would result in the greatest power output. This motor was also very easy to turn which helped out alot. And don't ask me for the serial number or any info on the motor because it is all worn off otherwise I would gladly give it to you. And yes it is this model displayed here and it was a dc motor just being shaft driven by the turbine. If you have any more questions let me know.

Just so I know what you are saying you want to build a generator (the motor that generates the power) for household appliances. Leave a reply on what kind of sutff you would like to power and I will find you some links because I am not sure how to construct a "generator" from scratch. I have made a small dc motor but besides that I don't have much of a clue because for household appliance you would need and alternator because that produces ac current. If you can't find anything on how to make one or if I am not understanding what you mean than let me know.
hmm, i think i would be better off trying to see what is the greatest amount of volts i can produce and compare to different types of appliances... kind of make it symbolic by measuring the voltage and then comparting it to stuff that uses the same or lesser amount of voltage if it is possible, i want to see if i can maybe power a lamp for a class demonstration durring my presentation and thank you very much for your help so far, i'm starting to feel it's possible

Tesla's original 9 inch turbine was built in 1893, steam powered, and is still running today producing 50,000 watts 24/7/365

Howdy from Texas. I've been designing a Tesla turbine for the past year now and have been looking for a test model to proceed with my idea. Your model looks like a plausible candidate. Thanks for the info and I'll be getting back to you as things progress.

After reading some of Tesla's documentation on the subject that is available on Tesla Coil Assoc. of America. it is interesting to note that this turbine can not only be used as a motor but it can also be used as a pump.

Once again thanks for the concept, I'll see about taking some pictures of my experiments as time goes on for documentation purposes. I am hoping to create a commercial model of my project.

by the way, the turbine that I am standing in front of is the right engine of one of my company's 787. Think of the commercial application of a Tesla turbine on an aircraft; no this is not my idea; just a fun thought.

could you show us a water adaptation of this design? i figure you'd just not have vents and have one clear exhaust but i'd still like to see how it works

Why do you wrap the incoming air around the body of the turbine.  I would think a straight in air pipe would be simpler and not have additional friction of the bends.
Pardon if I sound ignorant, but would be better to have the end of the tubing a conical shape? To increase initial pressure blowing into the turbine?

Instructions were easy to follow. Although it will take a bit of machinist experience, it is easy to build. Got mine up to 25K rpm! Used hybrid bearings which I think helped

have you tried drilling exhaust port's on both end. also have you thought of using a venture effect like in a carborator from a car as this would incress your air speed as it would enter into the tesla turbine'

Can a Tesla turbine run on steam? I have been trying to find a way to make a portable power supply that can be fuelled on the cheap. Water is cheap(ish) :D

certainly but requires a large volume of it so a flash boiler is recomended

cause your starting from the edge of the hole, and thats not the center of the other hole

So I built this turbine in accordance with "Most" of the instructions on this web page. However, my turbine does not spin very fast at all. Mabye a few hundred RPM's. The only thing I deviated from was the spacers I used. Instead of the platter spacers the instructions calls out for I used some nylon spacers I found laying around. Because of this I had to use 4 more platters (total of 14) to fit on the axle I assume because these spacers are a bit thinner than the disk platter spacers.

My question is: Will it not spin fast because of the distance between platters. My suspicions lie with that the gap between the edge of disk platters to the inside of the 4" PVC is to great. What are your thoughts?

BTW, the turbine I built looks great. Ill try and post pics soon.
UPDATE:
Ok, so I remedied my RPM dilemma that concerned me as stated above. All I did was use cork gasket to decrease the distance between the outer edge of disk platters and the I.D. of the 4" PVC. The turbine now runs really fast. I have a tach on order but havent checked the speed just yet. Very happy with the results of this turbine though. Cheers

Could you just put up a few annotated pictures? or annotate all your pictures =p and im really interested in making this and im curious why youre using the hard disc platters? would any metal do or do they need to be magnetised?
