Introduction: How to Make the Flaming Dr. Pepper!

Picture of How to Make the Flaming Dr. Pepper!

A Popular Party Drink That Tastes Just Like The Soda. Check It Out!

I have no idea how this works.. its magic really.. some kind of voodoo im guessing.
But anyway if you mix these 3 alcoholic beverages, (the best kind of beverages,) By some sort of Booze Miracle it tastes just like a frosty Dr. Pepper!

Here is the instructional video. Next I will break it down into steps.

Check out more of my DIY videos on my Metacafe channel...

Step 1: Gather Ingredients..

Picture of Gather Ingredients..

All you need for this one is..

1/2 - 3/4 full glass of light beer.

1/2 shot of amaretto.

1/2 shot of 151 proof Rum

a lighter, a spoon, and a shot glass.

Step 2: Layer

Picture of Layer

This is the tricky part. Carefully layer the rum on top of the amaretto.

This takes a little bit of practice.. watch the video for further instructions.

*151 proof rum is required because most other brands are to low of a percentage of alcohol to ignite.

Step 3: Ingite!

Picture of Ingite!

Carefully Light the rum, this may take a few seconds to get lit and the blue flames are hard to see in well lit areas.

Step 4: The Fun Part! Drop & Chug!

Picture of The Fun Part! Drop & Chug!
Be careful while dropping the flaming shot into the beer, splashes or spills can cause fires and letting go of the shot glass to hard can shatter it.

Now you drop the shot glass in and pound the drink quickly. If this drink is made and drank correctly, it Tastes Just like a ice cold Dr. Pepper!

Like I said before, I have no idea how this works. I imagine there are different beers that could be used to perfect the Dr. Pepper flavor. Let me know if you guys have any ideas.

If you guys like this please rate it and check out some of my other instructables

This was my all-time favorite drink years ago. The truth is, that the first one does NOT taste like Dr Pepper....................EVERYTHING after that does. hahaha

jrh143 (author)2008-08-01

This question may seem a bit amateurish, but why the flame? Is it merely for the effect or does it do something magical to the flavor? Could one simply add all ingredients but skip the flames altogether, thereby avoiding the danger?

cchin1 (author)jrh1432011-05-17

Flame caramelizes some of the 151, giving it a slightly sugary feel. It doesn't do much, but it makes it a bit more palatable.

TheCaptain (author)jrh1432008-08-12

It MAY concentrate the rum. You know, burn off some of the alcohol in the rum. Just a guess...

Holden_vy_s (author)TheCaptain2009-12-26

It would become less concentrated if you burnt the alcohol out of it...

It's just for aesthetics.

m0nk3yb01 (author)Holden_vy_s2011-04-07

If the alcohol was being burned off, it would become more concentrated, as there would be less liquid with the same amount of whatever gives rum its flavor dissolved in it. The proof would get weaker, but the flavor would get stronger.

korgoth25 (author)jrh1432009-12-26

all the other comments make sense but personaly i think its just to make it look more awsome (author)2011-05-16

The 151 rum is not required to get the drink to taste like Dr Pepper. I've been making and drinking this shot for years and all you need is:

Drop the amaretto shot into the glass of beer and coke and chug away.

Excellent party shot and no worries about burning off your 'brows :)

Looks impressive, but I tried Dr. Pepper once. Why would you wish to emulate the taste?

Because it is the all-time greatest beverage ever to have been conceived by mankind. In fact, legend has it that Dr. Pepper was actually an ancient and powerful drink of the gods, which was accidentally discovered thousands of years ago by Homer's lesser known but arguably more important cousin, Ed. Ed found the brew after Hades and Aphrodite had had a rousing game of celestial croquet, during which they consumed large quantities of this beverage. The bottle slipped from Hades' robe and fell to earth after he nearly fell off the heavens (THAT would have been a disaster!). Ed found the brew, and enjoyed it so much he spent the rest of his life attempting to recreate it, which he did. And Dr. Pepper was born.

Pie Ninja (author)bigjeff52009-10-01

Oh yeah? Well Mountain Dew is made from angel's laughter and happiness. Top THAT.

Ewwwwww!... Gimme the crab juice.

I see what you did there.

Was Ed's last name Pepper, and was he a doctor? If so, a doctor of what?

I gotta call shenanigans on the above story. It is just to wacky to be true. lol

This year Dr. Pepper announced that if the band Guns 'n' Roses release their long overdue album (somewhere like 10 years overdue) in 2008, then they will give a free can of Dr Pepper to evry american citizen excluding their technically british guitarist; slash. if you ask me id release an album for a can of Dr P so why shouldnt they!

Some people like Dr. Pepper.. and if you don't, this is still a pretty sweet party drink that is sure to impress a crowd.

The first and only time I tried Dr. Pepper was over 20 years ago, so I might be up to trying it again. Perhaps my tastes have changed. Perhaps if I tried your drink a few times, the taste probably wouldn't matter anyhoo...

lol there you go!

Try is 22 more times...

Why light beer?

cornflaker (author)Matt4_162009-04-24

Why rum? Why amaretto?

Matt D655 (author)2008-07-19

does it honestly taste similar to dr. pepper?

EviLNinJa (author)Matt D6552008-07-19

Tastes just like it. Im sure that the brands of liquor you use can tweak the taste to get it even closer to the real thing i used disaronno amaretto, bud light and bacardi 151. It tasted pretty close also, the faster you pound it, the better the taste.

sojakai (author)EviLNinJa2009-02-27

This sounds like a version of the old drink, Root'er Toot'er Shoot'er. I cant remember how its made, but it tastes just like rootbeer. I do remember that its made with schnapps though...

hammer9876 (author)2008-09-20

Yup. That's just what we all need. Drinks that can cause fires. Can anyone say, "Where is the nearest exit?" Or, better. "Let's call 9-1-1 AFTER we get out of the bar."

For all of you non-aficionados, Dr Pepper dropped the period from their name in the 1950s. For the history of the drink, visit:
Dr Pepper Museum
Excellent museum by the way.

Matt D655 (author)2008-07-19

i never heard of it and i have a bar book of over 780 drinks in it.

Sugarnomics (author)2008-07-10

Buy a small bottle of 151, it will last for years. Any decent liquor store has it. Also, just to clarify, vaporized alcohol ignites at a MUCH lower temperature than liquid alcohol. A little nuke will work just fine to flame underproof booze.

Chard (author)Sugarnomics2008-07-11

sorry to get geeky but technically a liquid never burns, only its vapour :P

Sugarnomics (author)Chard2008-07-11

D'oh.'re right I guess. It's the particles evaporating off the surface of the liquid that are burning. I is pwned by semantics. I'll redeem myself by inserting some safety info. When igniting a flaming drink, always dim the lights, since the blue flame is difficult to see in full light, and can be dangerous. Have a fire extinguisher ready, and light it away from your face and your curtains. If you heat up the alcohol, be especially careful, since the vapor can ignite pretty far away from the surface and leave you without eyebrows.

Chard (author)Sugarnomics2008-07-11

heh you are absolved! also from witnessing this happen in Prague, if you do a flaming shot, dont let it burn for too long before blowing out and drinkin. You loose loads of the acohol and as my friend disovered, the lquid gets freakin hot and burns your top lip

steve5006 (author)2008-04-25

does it have to be 151 or will a somewhat less potent rum also work?

EviLNinJa (author)steve50062008-04-25

It has to be a high proof rum in order to ignite.

edpotrafke (author)EviLNinJa2008-04-26

Yes it does burn. Heating the amaretto evaporates out the alcohol, so it ignites easily. Either that, or I must have magic powers.

Putzer (author)edpotrafke2008-06-03

I'm leaning on magical powers

bhunter736 (author)edpotrafke2008-05-24

This is correct, and works when you make Bananas Foster as well. The heating causes the evaporation to speed up significantly and is why the Banana desert burns with only regular 80 proof rum. However, it cools quickly, so ignite it right away. We used to drink way too many of these. After the first one, you don't have to light them for the effect. Like everything else, you can lower the quality of ingredients after the first couple of drinks. Amazingly, this really does taste a lot like a soda. By the way, Bananas Foster is really easy and impresses girls. : ) At least in my experience.

You need something that is at least 100 proof to sustain a flame.

edpotrafke (author)steve50062008-04-26

I've always just used amaretto and beer. Warm the amaretto in the microwave, and it will fire right up.

EviLNinJa (author)edpotrafke2008-04-26

no it wont... there is not enough alcohol in amaretto to light on fire. microwaving wont do anything but ruin your drink. warm flaming Dr. peppers are gross.

thematthatter (author)2008-04-25

i can get the beer and amaretto but the 151 "Fum" is a little hard to come by. :)

EviLNinJa (author)thematthatter2008-04-25

Thanx, Fixed ... You guys will never guess why there are spelling errors in this one!

thematthatter (author)EviLNinJa2008-04-26

my guess you made a few and then decided to post an instructables

boonokian (author)2008-04-25

its supposed to be about 70/30 amaretto to 151, and bars shoot a tiny splash of cola in the beer as well, man i love dr peppers. i have been known to drink dr peppers alone in my kitchen, my friends cant really chug

EviLNinJa (author)boonokian2008-04-25

Thank you for the tips.. i will add them when I get a chance.

boonokian (author)EviLNinJa2008-04-26

duck-lemon (author)2008-04-24
