This was my all-time favorite drink years ago. The truth is, that the first one does NOT taste like Dr Pepper....................EVERYTHING after that does. hahaha

This question may seem a bit amateurish, but why the flame? Is it merely for the effect or does it do something magical to the flavor? Could one simply add all ingredients but skip the flames altogether, thereby avoiding the danger?
May 17, 2011. 8:38 PMcchin1 says:
Flame caramelizes some of the 151, giving it a slightly sugary feel. It doesn't do much, but it makes it a bit more palatable.

all the other comments make sense but personaly i think its just to make it look more awsome

It MAY concentrate the rum. You know, burn off some of the alcohol in the rum. Just a guess...
Dec 26, 2009. 2:20 AMHolden_vy_s says:
It would become less concentrated if you burnt the alcohol out of it...

It's just for aesthetics.
Apr 7, 2011. 11:17 PMm0nk3yb01 says:
If the alcohol was being burned off, it would become more concentrated, as there would be less liquid with the same amount of whatever gives rum its flavor dissolved in it. The proof would get weaker, but the flavor would get stronger.

The 151 rum is not required to get the drink to taste like Dr Pepper. I've been making and drinking this shot for years and all you need is:

*beer
*amaretto
*coke

Drop the amaretto shot into the glass of beer and coke and chug away.

Excellent party shot and no worries about burning off your 'brows :)

Why light beer?

Why rum? Why amaretto?

does it honestly taste similar to dr. pepper?

This sounds like a version of the old drink, Root'er Toot'er Shoot'er. I cant remember how its made, but it tastes just like rootbeer. I do remember that its made with schnapps though...

Yup. That's just what we all need. Drinks that can cause fires. Can anyone say, "Where is the nearest exit?" Or, better. "Let's call 9-1-1 AFTER we get out of the bar."

For all of you non-aficionados, Dr Pepper dropped the period from their name in the 1950s. For the history of the drink, visit:
Dr Pepper Museum
Excellent museum by the way.

i never heard of it and i have a bar book of over 780 drinks in it.

Looks impressive, but I tried Dr. Pepper once. Why would you wish to emulate the taste?
Jul 14, 2008. 10:51 AMChard says:
This year Dr. Pepper announced that if the band Guns 'n' Roses release their long overdue album (somewhere like 10 years overdue) in 2008, then they will give a free can of Dr Pepper to evry american citizen excluding their technically british guitarist; slash. if you ask me id release an album for a can of Dr P so why shouldnt they!
Jun 3, 2008. 11:20 PMbigjeff5 says:
Because it is the all-time greatest beverage ever to have been conceived by mankind. In fact, legend has it that Dr. Pepper was actually an ancient and powerful drink of the gods, which was accidentally discovered thousands of years ago by Homer's lesser known but arguably more important cousin, Ed. Ed found the brew after Hades and Aphrodite had had a rousing game of celestial croquet, during which they consumed large quantities of this beverage. The bottle slipped from Hades' robe and fell to earth after he nearly fell off the heavens (THAT would have been a disaster!). Ed found the brew, and enjoyed it so much he spent the rest of his life attempting to recreate it, which he did. And Dr. Pepper was born.

Was Ed's last name Pepper, and was he a doctor? If so, a doctor of what?

The first and only time I tried Dr. Pepper was over 20 years ago, so I might be up to trying it again. Perhaps my tastes have changed. Perhaps if I tried your drink a few times, the taste probably wouldn't matter anyhoo...

Jul 10, 2008. 8:48 PMSugarnomics says:
Buy a small bottle of 151, it will last for years. Any decent liquor store has it. Also, just to clarify, vaporized alcohol ignites at a MUCH lower temperature than liquid alcohol. A little nuke will work just fine to flame underproof booze.
Jul 11, 2008. 2:09 AMChard says:
sorry to get geeky but technically a liquid never burns, only its vapour :P
Jul 11, 2008. 3:21 AMSugarnomics says:
D'oh. Well...you're right I guess. It's the particles evaporating off the surface of the liquid that are burning. I is pwned by semantics. I'll redeem myself by inserting some safety info. When igniting a flaming drink, always dim the lights, since the blue flame is difficult to see in full light, and can be dangerous. Have a fire extinguisher ready, and light it away from your face and your curtains. If you heat up the alcohol, be especially careful, since the vapor can ignite pretty far away from the surface and leave you without eyebrows.
Jul 11, 2008. 3:56 AMChard says:
heh you are absolved! also from witnessing this happen in Prague, if you do a flaming shot, dont let it burn for too long before blowing out and drinkin. You loose loads of the acohol and as my friend disovered, the lquid gets freakin hot and burns your top lip
Apr 25, 2008. 12:11 PMsteve5006 says:
does it have to be 151 or will a somewhat less potent rum also work?
May 29, 2008. 4:18 PMcloaked woodsman says:
You need something that is at least 100 proof to sustain a flame.
Apr 26, 2008. 1:51 PMedpotrafke says:
I've always just used amaretto and beer. Warm the amaretto in the microwave, and it will fire right up.
Apr 26, 2008. 6:06 PMedpotrafke says:
Yes it does burn. Heating the amaretto evaporates out the alcohol, so it ignites easily. Either that, or I must have magic powers.
Jun 3, 2008. 4:34 PMPutzer says:
I'm leaning on magical powers
May 24, 2008. 12:58 PMbhunter736 says:
This is correct, and works when you make Bananas Foster as well. The heating causes the evaporation to speed up significantly and is why the Banana desert burns with only regular 80 proof rum. However, it cools quickly, so ignite it right away. We used to drink way too many of these. After the first one, you don't have to light them for the effect. Like everything else, you can lower the quality of ingredients after the first couple of drinks. Amazingly, this really does taste a lot like a soda. By the way, Bananas Foster is really easy and impresses girls. : ) At least in my experience.
Apr 25, 2008. 5:40 AMthematthatter says:
i can get the beer and amaretto but the 151 "Fum" is a little hard to come by. :)
