Picture of How To Make a Tank Top Tote
This is a great way to recycle those old tank tops you can't (or shouldn't) wear anymore. If you don't have what you want in your closet, take the kids to the thrift store for some shopping!

These totes are perfect for gifts, a quick update for an outfit, and carrying a few of your favorite toys.

Materials needed for your project:

One tank top (try an nice camo one for the boys)
Thread and needle
Sewing machine (unless you are teaching your little one to hand stitch)
Seam ripper

Extras for embellishments:

Heat n Bond
Material scraps
Left over beads, etc.

Step 1: Prep For Sewing

First you need to flip the tank inside out and carefully remove the label with a seam ripper.

Then, line up the bottom hems and pin to keep them from slipping as you sew.

Step 2: Sewing The Bottom of Your Bag

To give your bag a secure bottom, first stitch the hems closed with an overlock or zig-zag stitch.

Then, run a straight stitch over the the top of the overlock seam for extra strength.

Step 3: Wa la!

Cute huh! You could call yourself done here... unless you want to get funky!

That's what I thought... let's add some funk!

Now, go dig through your junk draws and craft baskets and see what you can find.

Step 4: Getting Funky

I found some scraps of upholster fabric and some left over beads from another project.

Cut some cute shapes out of your fabric.

If you have some Heat n Bond lying around, use this to hold your shapes in place while you sew them on.

Step 5: Sewing On The Fun Stuff

After pressing your fabric shapes in place, stitch around the edges.

This is a nice decorative touch and ensures that they won't come off.
this is quite similar to my sweatshirt bag

Oh, and who is the precious model for the tote bag? What a handsome little boy, I bet he is proud of his momma making this bag for him to tote around his toys!!!

This is such a nice idea and so simple. What a great way to re-use something a person no long wants to wear or use. I am always needing a tote bag for something and this would have a hundred different uses. This Granmomma can always think of a use for a nice tote bag such as this. You have my vote! Good luck on winning that sewing machine.

I think pre-teens would like this project. Lots of room for individuality and creativity. We'll give it a try!

I think your tote idea is wonderful! But who is that handsome little boy? He looks like a golden cub!! Is he a movie star? I'm voting for this kids craft contest entry!
Very cute project!

This is probably the best project I've ever seen! I want to sew one for myself, and I don't even need a tote bag! And the funky!
