Here's a quick command to add 'Quit Finder' to the Finder menu, allowing you to turn off the desktop on your Mac.

Step 1Get a Mac

Get a Mac
The first step is to get a Mac. Any will do as long it runs at least OS X. You can a use PPC or Intel Mac.

These are the specs of the computer I used:

Apple "Ice Book" Dual USB
600 MHZ G3 Processor
12.1 inch (1024x768) display
640mb RAM
Rage M3 8mb graphics card
160gb Hard drive
Mac OS 10.4.11

This "Hack" should work on any Mac. I am not responsible for any damage done to your computer. On a lighter note, I have already tested this on 5 separate Macs with no negative effects.

If you quit finder a lot it will damage your data so don't do it.

man you guys are great at writing ibles
ive got an ancient iMac DV (2000) that has an app called OnyX and that app can add a Quit Finder option in the Finder's app menu
but it only lasts once. if you relaunch the finder or log out you lose the option :(
i would like another way to make it more permanent.

lol wow I could've used this when I had a macbook... they are nice, and really cool, but I couldn't stand how photoshop worked and I had to replace my harddrive three times in one month before they finally gave me a new one. The battery life was one big issue I had with it, I was constantly having to run to plug it in lol
