Laptop power chargers and USB cables always break at the same point and once they do, it's not long before they stop working altogether.

Here are instructions to show you how to repair this problem quickly and very easily using sugru.

Just to state the obvious, your cable needs to be in working order before you use sugru to make this strain relief...

Why use sugru ?
1: sugru will bond to the cable and the power block.
2: sugru cures to a flexible silicone rubber which means that it is unlikely to break again.
3: sugru is an electrical insulator.

If you don't already have sugru, you can get it directly from us at sugru.com

Step 1: Getting Ready

You have about 30 minutes to work with sugru before it starts to cure so you have plenty of time.

Open one mini pack (5g) of sugru with a scissors cutting along the dotted lines.

Peel open the mini pack.

Remove the sugru and knead it in your fingers for around ten seconds.

Shape the sugru into a flat sausage roughly 40mm in length.

Step 2: Apply Sugru to the Damaged Cable

This step is all about getting the best possible bond to the cable and power block.

Position the flat sausage of sugru underneath the damaged cable and up against the power block.

Wrap the sugru around the cable.

Press the sugru firmly onto the cable and the power block to ensure you get a good bond to the surfaces.

Making the sugru repair long gives the best results.

Don't worry about making it look perfect yet, that comes later.

TOP TIP: To remove sugru from your fingers, just use dry tissue paper, it works a treat.

You may want to do this during your hack to avoid getting smudges or smears on your cable or power block.

Step 3: Getting a Great Finish

Now it is time to make your hack look good,

Use masking tape to hang the cable from a table. This position makes it easy to get a good finish and is a great place to leave your cable as the sugru cures overnight.

Gently rub your fingers up and down the sugru until it is smooth, be careful not to apply too much pressure to the sugru. After a little practice you will have a good idea of how much force you should use.

For an even smoother glossy finish, dip your fingertips in soapy water and gently rub the surface of the sugru.

Leave the cable to cure overnight, you will be able to use it in the morning and after 24 hours it’ll be strong, rubbery and very protective – and it’ll stand up to much more abuse.

Step 4: Mac and PC Compatible :)

For the more adventurous, we also make sugru in orange, green and blue :)
