Introduction: How to Replace a Washer Coupler (Whirlpool or Maytag)

Step by Step instructions for replacing a washer coupler on Whirlpool and Maytag washers. This is one of the most common parts to fail on a washer and it is a relatively easy repair most do-it-yourselfers can do. Instead of calling a repairman, do this repair yourself can and save time and money.

Step 1: Warning

Before attempting any appliance repair, be certain you have unplugged the appliance and completely disconnected it from any power source.

Step 2: Tools

The tools you'll need for this repair are as follows:

Putty knife
1/4 inch nut driver or socket
Phillips screwdriver
Flat tip screwdriver
Hammer and piece of pipe
Container for screws

Step 3:

For some Whirlpool models, you will begin by removing two screws from the back of the unit. Other models will require the control panel end caps to be removed to expose the two screws. On Maytag models, slide a putty knife underneath the control panel on the far left end and pop it up. Repeat on the opposite side.

Step 4:

Once the control panel has been released, flip it up away from the washer.

Step 5:

Disconnect the lid switch.

Step 6:

Take the flat tip screwdriver and pop out the two brass springs.

Step 7:

With the lid open, grasp the cabinet and tilt it forward and lift upward at the same time to place it out of the way.

Step 8:

Release the two clips holding the pump to the motor and swing it out of the way. You do not have to remove the hoses.

Step 9:

Disconnect the wiring harness.

Step 10:

Remove two brackets and screws holding the motor in place and remove motor.

Step 11:

Now half of the coupler will be exposed and attached to the motor. You should also be able to see the transmission shaft, which attaches to the other half of the coupler.

Step 12:

Remove all pieces to the coupler and begin by replacing the half on the transmission shaft. You may need a piece of pipe and a hammer to secure this in place.

Step 13:

Replace the rest of the coupler on the motor and place the motor back on.

Step 14:

Replace motor bracket and screws and reconnect wiring harness. Replace pump and two clips holding pump on.

Step 15:

Place cabinet back on making sure to the small holes on the bottom match up to the tabs.

Step 16:
