The "U" channel is actually called hat channel or track because of the "brim". U channel does not have the brim. The brim is used in conjunction with a wire clip that attaches the channel to 1 1/2" black iron U channel. You could save money and time by not using any furring at all. Screw the rock directly to the main runners and cross tees of the acoustical suspended ceiling above. Less weight, and you also gain 1 inch more height for the ceiling.
