You can throw from a point or the center. Point will give you more strength (moments), while the center will give you more accuracy, but is more diffiult to pull off. Your fingers or palm can screw up the throw, sending it haywire.
With this design, you will notice the points go in a certain direction. If I flip the shuriken over, you will notice the flat is going first. I am not sure of the difference, but I prefer the point leading. Also, the laws of pressure mean this will be stronger. Smaller surface area means more pressure, thus getting hit by the point is more effective.

Believe me, I shot the dart out of my k'nex bolt launcher at my friend's shoulder (he was only wearing a T-shirt) and he only felt a small bit of pain. The dart broke as well.
