Burn off the inside
I lit a fire in it to burn off any paints or coatings or who knows what. There may or may not have been a burn ban going on this day so I made burgers on my gas grill to disguise the smoke.

Welding flatbar to the outer edges of the lid would prevent warping and help retain the heat as well. Would have liked a shot of you actually smoking something on it. Good suggestion about avoiding galvanized as well. I'm sure you will refine it as you use it, needs a little tweaking, but hey, it was cheap and ready available. Good project for a weekend/
