How to Build a Time Machine (Vortex Distortion Space and Time Dilating Device)

 by gmjhowe
Featured
Well lets put it this way, ive always had this thing about traveling through time, and having a time machine. So i set about making one, i decided that instead of being a vessel to travel in, i would rather have something portable.

Many hours thinking i came to a conclusion. If im going to be traveling through time, the actual time machine would have to be timeless (not out of place in the past, present day, or the future)

So eventually i decided to make something that resembled a time piece, mixed with an old compass, and various other inspirations, some from various steam punk items.

However i did not want to make something that was steam punk, as i personally find alot of steam punk to be a bit over comic like, and a bit to fantastical.

So, heres how i did it.

Materials consist of -

Alot of scrap and junk
corrugated cardboard
Mount card
PVA glue
Super glue
Black paint
Spray paint
Leather
Wood
Some thicker mount card
A few Special oddments - for me this was the lenses.

Step 1: Building a base

Photo-0095.jpg
Photo-0096.jpg
Ok, now the base of my time machine was modeled around two ring type peices of metal, and as with the rest of the -ible, you kinda have to work things out for yourself too!
Firstly, i set about cutting out some ring shaped pieces of card, As you can see from the pics below.

Obviously, you could just create this thing from scratch using cardboard. But i think a good scavinge can always turn a good result - The metal sections in the first picture are off an old repromaster! bout 20,000 pounds worth of kit in there day ( we recently scraped ours)

I basically used these as a shape to trace onto the card.

Cut as many as you like to give it a good depth that your happy with.

I recommend corrugated card as it is easily to get a thick depth, its easy to cut, and great for gluing in later steps.

:( how does it work...:(????????
SockKreature in reply to aneetOct 17, 2011. 10:44 PM
It works by distorting the time realm in half and forcing a gateway through to the past. It then merges the two dimensions until the two parts, you and the watch, are successfully transported.
totusvoloestmei in reply to SockKreatureMay 16, 2013. 8:02 PM
SockKreature (or do you prefer William?),

What if there's more than one person? Would each one have to have their own watch?

Where did you learn all of this anyway?
DeceptibotX in reply to SockKreatureMar 24, 2012. 6:59 AM
Geez, I'd love to see it in actiopn. PLEASE tell me you are not bluffing! There have been two dreams I've had; time traveling and touching the cosmos.

It only describes going into The Past , Does It work for going into The future ??
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Alecia294167Feb 23, 2012. 6:44 AM
It does indeed! The time machine was originally about a metre long, like a tall cylinder, going to the future allowed me to install a compression filter, which reduces the time machine into the more slim line size you see today.
Butter634 in reply to gmjhoweJul 6, 2012. 1:56 PM
It really couldn't take you to the future because in order for the time machine to take you anywhere, you would have had to live through that time or have a very good knowledge of what happened there. So, unless you made a time machine in the future and used it to get back to the current time, and THEN went BACK to the future, you wouldn't be able to time travel to the future.
totusvoloestmei in reply to Butter634May 16, 2013. 8:00 PM
Makes more sense to me than the other way around which is what the popular theory is. The past has already happened. We know it's there. The future doesn't exist yet.

Then again...if we went to the past..I guess we would be from "the future".

I'm not saying travelling to the future is necessarily impossible, just saying it seems more improbable than travel to the past, and yet the popular opinion is the opposite.

SockKreature in reply to kaynien15May 16, 2011. 12:38 PM
Haha! Thats what happened to me when i made it to. I was so bummed but i realized how do fix this problem! Under the glass lens place a time space continuum crystalized portal apparatus specifically cut to to circular size of the lens on yours. Then solder a wire on the middle of the crystal and drill a hole on the middles of the lens. Run the wire through the hole and seal the lens back on and solder the other end of the wire to the metal rim around the lens. Seal it up and turn it on and you should be good to go! Works great for me!

Note: The crystal that is in mine was surprisingly powerful enough to go back a full 72 hours! Good luck.

Excuse me, am I able to make a time machine out of a mobile phone (I have two phones, an LG B2000 and a HTC Desire HD) and if so, am I able to go back a few weeks or months?
SockKreature in reply to PK2PK2Oct 23, 2012. 5:19 PM
Phones would be for more of a teleportation device but it could be possible to use some parts for a time machine.

Here is a photo of the crystal. This crystal is dead, however, a live crystal looks the same but with a slight "glow". The crystal is also covered in a metallic glitter type substance, which makes it a little easier to find. they usually come small so look VERY CAREFULLY, the one in the photo is the biggest I've ever found.
hope this helped,

SockKreature, does this type of crystal have a name?

Like..if I went to a spirit shop, etc., what would I say I was looking for?

Also, it looks blue in the picture, but the whole photo appears blue. Is that its actual colour (looks a bit like lapis lazuli.)?

I am thinking I have seen these stones you and the Bandogge are desribing in nature before, but they were more of a charcoal grey or black in colour. Does the colouring vary? If they're the right ones I'm going to be really annoyed with myself for never keeping any of them (!) as I currently live quite far from any place I think I'd find any. Unless you think I could find some at an old quarry?

Not really any spirit shops or anything around either, so might they be available anywhere else besides that? Online somewhere perhaps?

O i have a bunch of those

Where do you find it?
SockKreature in reply to ejwhite25Sep 25, 2011. 11:47 PM
Most of the time you can get it at your local Spirit shop or village. If you don't have one then you're going to have to find one... I found mine at the heart of a forest near a stream. Make sure when you are looking for it though, that you aren't hoping to find it. Just explore the area. You'll get the hang of it. Hope this helped!

The Bandogge in reply to SockKreatureMar 28, 2013. 9:48 AM
I found mine at a rift in alaska. The void (witch is the stream of wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff) leaks debris into certain parts of the world these are called rifts. Many stones and crystals are there and are soaked with void energy if you assemble your time device correctly you can adjust where in time you travel to. Amounts of energy vary with size of the stone which means the amount of times you can use it varies but you shouldn't have to worry about running out of energy because even a stone that weighs only 1 gram can be used about 600this times.

357awc in reply to SockKreatureSep 17, 2011. 8:00 PM
That maybe correct but a better way of going about would be to use the decay of time partials to use Diaphan's Principle to go anywhere in the time stream. It maybe much harder to activate but it is very worth is.
totusvoloestmei in reply to 357awcMay 16, 2013. 7:49 PM
357awc,

What is Diaphan's Principle? I looked it up but could not find any information on it anywhere. In layman's terms if possible? Thanks. :)

Can you explain decay of time partials as well? (partials? not particle? what are time partials?)

I know that's a lot of questions, but I haven't heard these terms before and really want to understand what you're talking about.
SockKreature in reply to 357awcSep 25, 2011. 11:49 PM
True... Very true... That would be very worth it and I bet it would lengthen the timespan you can travel back to! I must research this immediately and will announce my progress along the way. You sir are a true genius!

-William
357awc in reply to SockKreatureMay 14, 2012. 4:36 PM
the only problem with that is the inacuracy of reverse pinging the timesteam to locate the quantum fluxuation there for resulting in quantum abnormalities.

All you really need to do if you want a simple time machine is an old pocket watch, the crystal & and a little case for it. Just take the watch apart and organize it in the case you chose. Then solder a wire from the largest cog in the pocket watch to the crystal and put a top onto it. Hope this helped.

I want to go back a few months and I have a few questions for you:

1. May you please send me some Instructables on how to build a real working simple time machine with a modern sport wrist watch?

2. Is there any way to use time travel without the symptoms and side effects (de-stabilising the space-time continuum, changing history, memory loss, creating a modified timeline, creating a paradox, etc.)?

3. Is there any way I can become my younger self when I travel through time?

4. Is there any way I can travel through time back to a certain date without feeling like I have done anything?

5. Is there any way I can go back to a time before the time machine was made and have things exactly they were at that time?

8. Is there any way for me to have exactly the same thoughts I had on that date?

I think of time as a book. Every little detail is written in precise order on every page. You can go forward and skip to the end, or start over again or just keep going at the pace you are going. Technically, right now the Big Bang started, and technically the universe has ended. I would think that the real problem of time travel would arise when you try to rip a "page" out. Then anything goes. You are right in one aspect; time could very well be another dimension (along with thought and a varity of other things), but time travel is not impossible. I am not stating that as an opinion, but as a fact. You are time traveling right now, otherwise, you would be standing still.
h8864 in reply to DeceptibotXSep 17, 2012. 12:21 PM
no think of it as a timey-wimey ball not as a line or a book

if evry parrel dimseion it could be a diffrent time so in theroy we travel into those and when we kill someone it does not affect our reality i have found about 40 diffrent ways to travel in time
TheForkster in reply to physicsbreaklawsFeb 17, 2012. 7:07 AM
On the whole you are very wrong...time is a function of eternity,we are eternal beings in a state of mortality, we have witnessed the "past" and are experiencing the "present" and will after this experience return to our eternal state where we will once again see things as they really are...devoid of the illusion of time. But in mortality we shall not succeed in traveling to points other that the future...tick by endless tick.

All right everybody time machines that exist on earth are improbable due to the fact that if you travel into the past to chang sompthing it wouldent need to have been changed in the first place. So the slightest ripple in the time space continium would ultamently destroy all matter in a fourth dimentinal atmosphere. You can travel into the future by going clockwise arround the opening of a transdimentinal blackhole, you could also sleep for a long time :b
DeceptibotX in reply to djhohenMar 24, 2012. 6:46 AM
Improbable, but not impossible. I have tht same thought almost anytime I think about time travel, but really, in physics, there is nothing stating you can't time travel.

Tell me about it. Sometimes I think 'Yeah I will go for a little pretend, and go along with things' on the other hand, I do get people sending me messages that have signed up just to send me a message. The message normally goes along the lines of 'I really need to make this, need to travel in time, tell me how it works' some of them sound far too serious, so I tend to ignore those.

I apologise but that is only one of MANY theories. There are others, some which are simple guesses and won't work, some which are unaccessible in 2011, but some which do work, and will be available before too long to buy commercially. The first gen model XR2300 will be available in 2032.

Magia_San in reply to cbudimanSep 15, 2011. 8:17 PM
Because time travel, like Earth creatures and the idea of other planetary life not including human has been under closely guarded lock and key by the government. He is not the inventor, thus no nobel prize. You don't see other kids making it because they don't want to. For example, communication devices are so simple that children CAN make and used to, them but they still don't.

I'm sorry i'm not an expert but i think if you do that you will be changing people's time line, I know this sounds very "Doctor Who" but could be, imagine if you go back in time and you kill your father before you born, you will disapear in the air??
Magia_San in reply to tpescãoSep 15, 2011. 8:06 PM
No, they have restriction p.1227/b on that one, but stopping that other someone get hurt, bares no real penalty. In fact using Doctor Who as an analogy, he travels through time to stop people getting hurt.

Man I don't want to be rude but we don't need a sceptic, we have hope that one day we can really travel through time
Magia_San in reply to tpescãoSep 15, 2011. 7:59 PM
We already can travel through time, the first time it was shown to government it was hidden from the rest of us. It is true, honest complete, no bull, that a man DID go to his government with a time machine that he believed worked, for legal reasons I shall call him Addam.

Adam showed his mystical box (no, not euphamism) to a skeptical body of government, stating it was a 'Machine that could allow him to travel space and time'. Announcing this he stepped into his miraculous invention, and before everyones eyes, actually disappeared.

That much is true, he stepped inside and was never seen again, however even in 2011 people didn't believe 100%. Some say he managed it, some say that because he only built one machine he never had an exit, some say that he simply vapourised himself. But even from the most skeptical among them Addam had actually dissapeared in some way or another.

Though he didn't return, he did accomplish it, at an expense, which is why in your time it is still undergoing 'alterations' much as you don't use the origional computer. But the first one will be available commercially (so long as you can afford the £39,827.65 [$43,572.12] for the restricted version) in 2032. A long time I know, but that is the first one, using that theological system anyway.
willrandship in reply to tpescãoAug 9, 2011. 9:50 PM
That's not really the point. Neither he nor I are bashing on time travelling, but it's kind of sad that people don't understand what this is once they see the parts list.
gjones6 in reply to willrandshipSep 14, 2011. 6:45 PM
Why should that be a factor? Rube Goldberg built a complex machine out of simplistic parts and toys, and Macgyver makes anything out of everything. When are you people going to learn that nothing's impossible? That the wonders of this Universe are barely footsteps away. On a final note, they said there was no way for Man to ever fly, either.
willrandship in reply to gjones6Sep 15, 2011. 7:47 PM
Goldberg and MacGyver both had logical methods of making their machines work. I'm not saying time travel is impossible (in this comment, because it is, at least in reverse) I'm just saying that if it were a real device, it would probably have, at the very least, something that would be able to influence space-time. If cardboard and shiny metal doodads were key components to time travel, we wouldn't have much garbage laying around.

Only idiots said man couldn't fly. Others saw the way birds did it, and mimicked it. Hot air balloons were around centuries before the wright brothers, and yet people still called them crazy, because they were uninformed.
gjones6 in reply to willrandshipSep 26, 2011. 4:23 PM
It's true that they had mathematical and logical methods for making their machines work. And I'm not saying that this specific machine will work ( not having tried it for myself). I'm saying that the simplest elements can make the best things. So stop trying your very hardest to prove people wrong and accept the fact that Anything makes anything happen.

willrandship in reply to tpescãoAug 9, 2011. 9:51 PM
Well, going to the future already has scientifically semi-viable methods, as in we have a way, but it's prohibitively expensive as it involves a very fast-moving rocket. Coming back is the hard part.

remember space and time are in a loop so to say
without space, time will not affect anywhere, and without time there will be nowhere for space to exist.
although thats good and well, remember, to transport an object through time, you must have a destination void of space, because you can have two things in the one spot, which includes energy.
jpoopdog says: Jul 28, 2010. 7:36 PM
i have figured out the secret to time travel, but it required spontaneous teleportation or complete stillness in space. imagin this, you are standing on the roof of a train if you jump up you stay still in the air (you hold onto a tree still and motionless throughout space and time ....... as you hang from the tree the train continues passing under your feat, once you land again you are on the back carrage of the trian when you jumped from the front, this is time travel. the problem with this theory is not that its false, its very true, the problem is that you will not remain on earth when you time travel. the earth is moving, but as you travel through time you will remain motionless in time and space like the ground surrounding the train or better yet the tracks. this prevents specific time travel, you must travel to a time were the earth is in the same location in space or you will end up somewhere in outer space back in time. this is why teleportation is neccesary ..a black hole has slower time than normal, but only in the event horizon, which is past the infinty point, this is like jumping from a fast train to a slower train then back to the fast train doing the same journey of going back in time. currently we are moving as fast as time we need to slow down in time but seep up in space to go to the same location in space but a different location in time. going to the future is imposible as it has yet to occure and exist, you will be traveling to a place that is blank, whats more you will be traveling with time again and so you will bestuck. hope this helps
evilmousy in reply to jpoopdogDec 25, 2010. 2:46 PM
yea but jpoopdog scientists are working on finding a way to bend space time and to find ways to keep the wormholes from collapsing theres a 13 year old called jentill abdulla who has time machine plans here is his theory and illustrations

If you had 2 ten meter light-tunable magnets in front of each other and had one beam of blue light that had been traveling for thousands of years and put that in the middle of these two magnets then turned on 6 lasers on each magnet , and the side they are pointing makes the magnets face each other, and when the magnets are heated have eight smaller magnets on each magnet and make those magnets so that they would repel the big magnet. Then move all these magnets toward the plastic magnet so it will compress it on all sides so it will become smaller than it's Schwarzschild radius. After this is done the magnets both should become black holes. Since they are facing each other their gravities will act and join these 2 black holes together. There will still be a singularity but it will be magnetic. Now you make a device, that I have also made, that will split the singularity into a ring. This device will have one magnetized blade in the middle and then there will be 4 magnets ,in the shape of a pyramid when put together, held by a string. this string is the only thing holding the magnets together. Make the device so that when the device touches the magnetic singularity it will cut the string so that all the magnets immediately move away from each other. When the magnets move away from each other they will make a hole in the singularity. Since the string is no longer there the magnets will expand enough to make the singularity into ta ring. You will know if it works because you will be able to see the other side of the hole from the entrance. Since the beam of light is old and the light beam is what is creating the effect you will be able to go back to when that beam of light was first made.So through this it will make a traversable wormhole. The negative energy really won't be negative energy because since the smaller magnets are repelling the singularity it will push it outward in the opposite way or just rotate the 2 magnets from the begining so you don't have that problem

Spycrab in reply to Hades di AngeloJun 4, 2010. 12:54 PM
Well, you've heard about his famous top-hat, correct? Turns out he got that from Chiron Beta Prime (Google it), which has a song written about it, for this very reason, because this is where Abraham Lincoln got his top-hat from. This top-hat was supposed to cancel effects of Kill-o-Zap guns, yet was malfunctioning at the time, because even in the future you still use double-A batteries, which do run out of juice fairly quickly and have to be replaced daily in Kill-o-Zap gun deflecting top-hats. Hence, this is why the effects of the gun were not immediate, because the top-hat was running out of juice, and only absorbed half the blow of the gun.The cloak, obviously, rendered me invisible, so I was not seen whilst firing the gun. I later used a memory-wiper (similar to the 'men-in-Black' movies) to scramble the memories of the witnesses, so that they only saw him getting shot by a standard bullet-firing gun. Worked like a charm, too.
Hades di Angelo in reply to SpycrabJun 5, 2010. 8:42 AM

Skinr in reply to 19chris96Oct 23, 2009. 10:42 PM
Technically, you can only GO to the future, not the past.  This is because time only flows forward, and you're simply removed from the time stream for whatever length of time.  You can LOOK at the past, but you can't change it.

Anyway, mine is way different; I built the prototype in a suitcase, and now it's inside an old laptop.

This is a wonderful invention, so good, that I had little to improve upon when I created my own version. For mine, I went with a more compass-y, clock look rather than the open-topped optical look you achieved (very well, I might add). Some things I thought you might think about adding (and ones I also wanted to include in my own) were: an analog day/month/year display (newspapers are so untrustworthy past 1440), and a better power core (mine can only take 2 trips before it needs to be recharged). I tell you, reverse engineering the thing I thought would be difficult, but it's always the minor details that get you. (Out of character) I always think that Steampunk props always need something usable, so mine not only transports one through/around time, it also doubles as a very large pocket watch!

gmjhowe (author) in reply to jpond009Mar 10, 2009. 3:55 AM
haha! great work. The final thing looks pretty nice. One of the main things i wanted with mine was to move away from having loads of cogs. The idea behind my time machine is that it has a direct brain hook up, allowing you to move through space time as easily as moving a limb. I must say i love the brass base you have there. I would be so tempted to put some transfer graphics onto the glass!
jpond009 in reply to gmjhoweMar 16, 2009. 10:38 AM
I thought of that myself, but decided against it for now, on the sole basis that I have too many other projects and school to give the machine its proper care and attention it needs. Transfers simply went on my foot-long to-do list (it never seems to get any smaller). Future improvements take back-seat to new/exciting other projects, unfortunately.

Friends and family already think I'm a little crazy because of the Hobbit Hole (see http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cjjl3lVdx), so when I told them I was making a time machine, they all just nodded and gave knowing looks. One store clerk asked me when I would get it finished. "Does it matter?" I asked, "It's a time machine--I will get it done last week!" Thanks for the inspiration!

acerbjorn in reply to Lord_QuackMar 4, 2009. 4:04 AM
Another way to solve it is to simply make the core spin backwards in the 4th dimension. that way you will keep it in an infinity loop.
Lord_Quack in reply to acerbjornMar 5, 2009. 6:27 AM
4th dimension, you say... Hmmm... I'll do that then. A bit of modding, but then i can go back and rectify the mistake at the beginning of this shenanigans. :D
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Lord_QuackJan 13, 2009. 1:39 PM
Ack, thats an old problem that, for a long time, many of us used to replace them, and most machines were made with a 'reload' action. I suggest an artificial gravity well.

OK Let me "SCIENTIFICLY,EXPLAIN" my comments on these time machines really working for the person who keeps p/m-ing me that its impossible. they only work while in the process of building, meaning you start the project when you are bored and have a few hours to kill and when you are finished building you have reached the future. "GET-IT!" if you are going to keep flaming me atleast fully read my post "The one in adoration of this project" and also "The one providing real scientific information." If you will read them with the intension of understanding them you will see we are mostly in agreement. Though I will not agree time travel is impossible I will state it isn't human achievable because "we are hardly capable of traveling at the speed of sound"with assistance. Even in space, speed of light travel is humanly impossible because though we don't have the crushing forces like here on earth in space, we have no way of seeing any objects at those distances and those objects in motion would require a vehicle to change course, that course change at such speed would crush even diamonds to dust. for proofs research these topics, "higgs particle or God particle" "the big bang theory" For the big bang theorem to be true this God particle must exist yet it is still illusive and unobserved by man, though it must exist for mathematical proofs of our universe to be possible. This God particle is the element that is theorized to be responsible, for not only the the creation of our universe, but the destruction before and after its existence. The higgs particle is a theorized particle that can survive acceleration to the speeds required to cross our universe at the smallest measurement of time possible and its collision with its self or another like it is what is attributed with the creation in the big bang theorem. Lately physicist have attempted and failed to reach those speeds with particle acceleration If anyone of them had bothered to ask, I would have explained that it is impossible on earth to accelerate any particle to such speed, even in ellipses. Unless their accelerator is the size of the universe and still it would require the energies of all things in the universe exerted by a electrical means to impel the said particle down its path. in short ask someone save a couple trillion guy's. I'm sorry to clog you forum but someone needed informed.
venomireland in reply to iamdenteddiskSep 24, 2008. 10:26 AM
Nice info I appreciate people who actually know a thing or two. I heard somewhere that if particle accelaration is done correctly we can theoretically creat a black hole. If we can do this and control the black hole we will be able to distort and bend space and travel at light speeds(at least in theory)we will be able to search further out in the universe and possibly discover life on other planets. If it Was possible to create and control black holes and travel at light speed according to Einstein's theory of relativity ( I think ) we will be able to travel forward in time. Being able to travel backwards in time, however, is a different story, we still don't know if we could break physics and travel back in time
iamdenteddisk in reply to venomirelandSep 25, 2008. 7:56 AM
Thanks for the comment, also by the way I know there is a common misconception on terminology though I do understand your meaning,Back in the eighty's I think it was that Steven Hawking and a few others completed and corrected einsteins work, which included renaming what Einsteine called a black whole to "wormwhole" it was because Einsteins black whole was visible and could be studied through telescopes but not tested by physical means. Soon after he died the real "black whole was discovered lurking behind our sun, near to true center of our solar system and was further studied with satellites which vented gases in their trajectory, the finding was that Einsteins black whole was a "worm whole" which could not contain matter or time "a tear in space time" rejecting the gases, and the newly discovered black whole is its cause. The "blackwhole was a unconceivabley great mass condensed into a minute area" the blackwhole contains such a great mass not even light can escape because of terminal gravity. though a wormwhole readily passed light but matter is rejected. Like I said it is a common flaw which was taught for many years now, the correction is now being taught to the new generation, yet only those who seek will find this out. I posted this because I would hate to see someone innocently drive by a blackwhole and get sucked in by gravity and be crushed into nonexistence..lol or drive into a wormwhole attempting to explore and being hurdled in reverse to a different time space. If you are interested in quantum physics or in the science of time travel see my other post in this forum. Thanks agian.

shadowfluid in reply to iamdenteddiskFeb 19, 2009. 7:32 PM
sir, you have acquired a unique sense of style that the likes of me can appreciate greatly. i also hold an interest in philosophy and old english, (the complete tales and poems of Edgar Allen Poe would be an example of the latter, but the former? i have yet to find owt {british slang for "anything"} but art) your vocabulary is, shall we say...resplendent? splendorous? immaculate? i sought for some quality philosophical discussion to engage myself in, alas, i unwisely poked my head into the so called, "philo." section at craig's list and found nowt (more brit slang) but immature, vulgar, and repugnant talk the likes of which seemed to be written by decadent high-school dropouts whom i would publicly bite my thumb at. most had nothing to do with "philo." off of that tangent...scanning over your script, you seem to be a very learned man, much more knowledgeable than i. where did you study, oh scholar?

I had to favorite this because you gave me an awesome idea... it would be a pretty simply change but add a chain and behind that lense you could put a watch (digital or not, wouldnt matter) and you have yourself a very steam punk pocket watch.

I like the way one part of the prop helps the other. I also like how you followed through with your original design concept. Box age might be stained? or treated? to balance out the awesome aged look of the hand device. I like the way the internal workings fit together, they flow with the feel of an detailed instrument. This project does get one thinking on many different levels. Neat.

The wonderfull thing about these time machines is this 1 it states something that isnt said enough about our time here how it is wasted on frivolity's,other aristocratic's needs and no payback we are expected to keep our heads down and eat the grass and be good cows and wait for the bull to come around and do what bull's do. 2 these time machines actually work ,it will take days to compleate a complex time machine, afterwich you didnt loose any money, sweat or blood, help nobody else and you got a time machine out of it,beautyfull idea man brilliant in my book. 3 the younger one's set in wonder of possibility's i remember when i used to dream big dreams and allways hated getting shot down. 4 did I allready say brilliant, absolutly remarkable. 5 I just have to say the statement made by these goes far beond the outer realm into ephemeral you are reaching into the house of god and into the bathroom and flipping off the light while he's in the shower. I love it compleatly ,maybe I dont deserve an explanation why I am here or just maybe I deserve nothing at all but then to why should I have to shoulder the burden's of socioty or governments when I can simply build one of these nifty time machines.
iamdenteddisk says: Aug 11, 2008. 10:28 AM
OK guy's gal's and space caddet's I wanted to put in my 2cents.

-Time travel is very possible yet not human achievable yet here is some of my theorems on why.
stated above about space/time "close laymen example" but the following should put you in the arena of thought needed to accomplish proof's.

1-redefine time as a moment of perception or reality or R() respectively.
1.1-reality must encapsulate all things in existence those perceived and unperceived aswell.
1.2- to summon reality requires summation of antireality or 1/R the recipacol of reality.
1.3 all things must be encapsulated in R()
such as the formula for energy
"E=MC2" encapsulates mass/light/energy
1.4-to these must also be added
strong forces & weak forces such as magnetism velocity friction radiation...etc/continuous wave & intentional wave constants/superstring constants as well as sub string constants/gravitational constants/spatial gravitational constants/aspect tellemitry/all things known...etc.

the following formula can be tested for further proofs when 1st we know the unknown ,then and only then will or can time travel be actuly possible and even then the formula only can provide proofs of solid matter passing through a "gate" or wormhole and then exiting the exact same place in a different time .
1/(1/R*R2)
now to explain paradoxical error.

1 what if the vehicle exits at the same time as it enters meaning the part of the vehicle that entered begins to emerge at the same said point giveing an collision this was einstien's time paradox.
meaning to enter the wormwhole is certian destruction.
though the passage exist, it is unpassable but this opens to us other possibility's

"Alice and the looking glass" the risk and journey taken only by passage through the glass but what if we simply cast a reflection and watch for distortions or images not cast upon the glass from our side.

2 the speeds at wich an antitime distortion requires to enter a wormhole is greater than any matter can handle let alone something as fragile as a human body.
basicly imagine the wormwhole being the surface of a trampoline the time travel idea is to land hard enough to break through.
once you read my definition of wormwhole bellow you will see you cant convensionaly pass through because matter cant exist without space to inhabit yet the wormwhole dose exist and because time cant exist there either we should be able to see a timless picture based on wich side you view the disk from one side showing before creation the other after destruction ifnot nothing at all considering the universe didnt exist bofore or after.either way it is a disklike portal to a timless picture of what is on its other side.

3 perhaps the looking glass theorem can be used to pass information transmissions to other times like an fiber optic cable even then the transmission method must be grater than light or sound.

What is next or how to actually achieve the impossible task?:- we must first find a way to control the oscillation of the wormwhole or a way to open it on entry and close it once inside ,also a way to reopen the "gate" in distant places.
or play to its oscillation meaning to calculate exact open/close timing and pass through like a speeding bullet at a speed high enough to break past any mass on the other end "this would be a velocity great enough to pass through the entire universe in the absolute smallest fraction of 1 second.

to do this we must first define the following

blackwhole:a place in space wich has such great density and volume of mass causing gravitational forces so great that not even light can escape.

wormwhole: a tear or riff in the space time continuum in wich no matter not even space or time can exist.

Universe:Still yet unknown/undefinable.

As you can see one is the holder of "dark matter" the other is the holder of "anti matter" and the later is not yet fully known.

if we could find evidence of matter passing through a wormwhole or cause it to happen with say a experimental projectile then we can find the key factors in passing through but in light of human resources the ability to understand this great artwork of gods hands will remain a mystory and a reason to awe, fear, admire and marvel.

these are my theories and comments feel free to add your own or email me for further inqueries or discussion.

Yes, the humour level is quite high, you would think people would be able to work out its not real. Im glad you like it! i too understand the very long list. But the way i see it is it makes for a good filter - you only manage to get the good projects done.
EnigmaMax says: Aug 2, 2008. 3:49 PM
everything is made of two things: space and energy. even atoms are made of these. neither energy or space can be destroyed, mostly they just linger around. even energy 50 million years ago is still here. for example, if you can somehow gather all of the energy that occurred in 1950, reanimate that energy, then it is possible to travel to 1950. of course, this is only theory.

I found a particularly small flux capacitor at Dick Smiths (It's like the Australian equivalent of Radioshack) that fit perfectly. Funny thing though - when I had finished using my time machine, I went back in time to stop myself from buying it, and the shop assistant said I had already bought it earlier that day. He must have been experiencing 'future echoes' (As per Einsteins theory of relativity).

Ok. HAAHHA. I realize this is fake. I dont want to be mean though. Just dont lie to people. Obviously its just a creative thing that you did when you were bored, i commend you for such creativity. I dont know if you are all a group of people who set this up or something, but for anyone doesnt want to be duped into 6 hours of non enjoyable time, you will not be able to get those hours back. There are flaws to your steps that make it obvious. Also i happen to have read many books on time travelling space and time and overall science in that section. It is close, truthfully we are all travelling through time and space, otherwise it would be stopped, everthing. The flaw in your steps is the part where you say you add "rubish". That means everyone could have completely different insides, hence completely changing the whole machine and science behind it. Don't think i dont enjoy looking at your model. I am not mocking you of any sort. I just dont want you to trick someone into hours of something or even take something apart and it ends up hurting them or even killing them. 'In the woods': "Be careful what you say... someone might listen". Now i know thats almost compltely abstract from this subject, but i love that book and it can have very intense affects on people.

surroundsound5000 in reply to gmjhoweJul 11, 2008. 12:21 AM
Mines got a reverse feature. It goes backward at the rate of -120sec's every two minutes. For example if you run it for 4 minutes at midday, it will go back by -240 seconds. Of course this means (In 24 hour time) 12:00:00 minus negative 240 seconds results in 12:04:00. Imagine all the time I'm saving!

I almost understood that. Most of who believes that who speaks what, please? P.S. Sorry, but it's delusion, not dilution. I got what you mean, but they're two completely different things.

gmjhowe (author) in reply to Klaus Baude 123May 23, 2008. 12:20 AM
Thanks, it did aim for a higher level of realism than steampunk, as i find some steam punk can be a bit comic like, and cartoony, like those 'ray guns' PLASMA RIFLE all the way! ps - new handgun being built currently, i will show them how a 'ray' gun is supposed to look.
Klaus Baude 123 in reply to gmjhoweMay 23, 2008. 9:12 PM
Yeah, but steam punk is quite serious actually. not cartoonish, if you ask me
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Klaus Baude 123May 24, 2008. 2:11 AM
well it depends, ive seen alot of things get referred to as steam-punk that were a bit cartoony - you are quite right tho, steam-punk in its original origins would fit this time piece quite perfectly.

hmm sounds fun and all, but a hand held device with numbers and stuff works just as well.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to JerBearMay 21, 2008. 2:01 PM
well it depends, if in the middle of battle, being able to shoot, then instantly reappear behind another enemy without having to mess with dials, or jump to a good scoping position, then back. or slow down time. every second counts.
JerBear in reply to gmjhoweMay 23, 2008. 3:11 PM

gmjhowe (author) in reply to diylyhbillyMay 23, 2008. 12:19 AM
im not sure what you mean by great library - youve lost me there. I hate to break it to you, but there is only 4 dimensions, dimensions 5 thru to 11 were dismissed as pure theories in the year 28,945ad

gmjhowe (author) in reply to xepher1May 21, 2008. 3:12 AM
creativity = lack of english skills.

I mean come on, you cant expect me to be good at making things and grammar and spelling?
Though i did check and change everything with a red line under it. so it could have been worse.

Spinning_Rings in reply to gmjhoweMay 21, 2008. 9:45 AM
So professional writers aren't creative?
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Spinning_RingsMay 21, 2008. 10:16 AM
well, i guess what i was trying to explain is that my creativity is my strong point, not my spelling, and personally i though my level of english was competent enough to explain my instructions. but its ok, you alway get one know it all with no instructables picking out the flaws in others.

Instead of trying to criticize someone's grammar and spelling skills, how about commenting on the project at hand. Is it an interesting Instructable or not? Does the project instill a sense of creativity in you or others? If you find someone's lack grammar and spelling skills offensive (not saying that yours are, gmjhowe), then read elsewhere.

Spinning_Rings in reply to DecepticonMay 22, 2008. 10:19 AM
Look, you're not getting the point. What I believe Xepher1 was saying, and I totally agree with him, is that that it is an interesting idea, it is a fun project, it is creative, and if some basic grammar rules were observed, it would be enjoyable to read, too. I mean, what's wrong with proper English? Why is it offensive to you people? I mean, I'm sorry I wasn't nicer about it, but it's true.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Spinning_RingsMay 21, 2008. 12:38 PM
'We have a "be nice" comment policy. Please be positive and constructive with your comments or risk being banned from our site.' FLAGGED
Spinning_Rings in reply to gmjhoweMay 21, 2008. 2:26 PM
There can be a big difference between "positive" and "constructive." But on the other hand, it isn't really constructive if we're only annoying each other. Even if I am right. (kidding.)
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Spinning_RingsMay 22, 2008. 12:32 AM
my comment about people picking apart instructables was aimed at xepher1, not at you, however i would like to point out that i did put effort into the english, and that anything that doesn't get picked up by the auto spellcheck in mac os x, gets missed by me. i am just that stupid.
Decepticon says: May 22, 2008. 8:39 AM
Your 'piece' looks very interesting. Maybe you could somehow add a button/switch and a supre bright LED to make it 'turn on'. Ever think about making Sci-Fi movie props? You seem to have the creativity and imagination for it.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to DecepticonMay 22, 2008. 8:45 AM
well, just for you, heres a spoiler - im in the process of making a handgun, and rigged up to it is a flash gun(like what u put on-top of a camera) and it will flash when u fire! I have thought about making them for a job, but then i wouldn't have a hobby.
Graphic design = job
Sci-fi props = hobby.

n8man in reply to gmjhoweMay 21, 2008. 8:16 PM

You're lying. I know for a fact it is called the PTA (Planetary Time-protection Agency) and it is within the UN it used to be called the Universal Time-protection Agencey (UTA) before a certain classified discovery.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to n8manMay 24, 2008. 11:36 AM
that agency was so 35,789ad, the MIQX was set up like 40,000 years after that and has been cleaning up there mess since!
Spinning_Rings in reply to gmjhoweMay 21, 2008. 9:53 AM
Yay, England! But a time traveler, with the potential to create a paradox and destroy the universe, would probably fall under international jurisdiction, and therefor attract FBI/CSI/NSA attention. Plus the US just likes throwing our big, worthless muscles around and into other country's business.

That's nice and all, Weissensteinburg, but the one and only true reason for the absence of a time machine is that that would mean there would be two Chuck Norris's, one in the past, and one in the future. They would, inevitably, murder each other, and everybody knows, Chuck Norris cannot die...

i see your logic, but theretically, they would keep fighting for eternity! stalemate, all the way

Finally! Now I can go back in time and... and... darn it I forgot what I wanted to do. :-(
gmjhowe (author) in reply to Mr. Rig ItMay 19, 2008. 2:28 PM

"I just made a time machine. It only moves forward at regular speed. It's essentially a cardboard box and on the side I wrote 'Thyme Musheene' in Sharpie."
thematthatter says: May 19, 2008. 3:55 PM
Where do you put the crystals? I wish i had a time machine, if i could only go back to 1982. Back in 82 i could throw a pigskin a quarter mile!
MadMechanicMike in reply to thematthatterMay 19, 2008. 4:23 PM
lol, that movie...
nf119 says: May 19, 2008. 2:36 PM
a brass strip around it would be nice
gmjhowe (author) in reply to nf119May 19, 2008. 2:37 PM

jdege says: May 19, 2008. 12:43 PM
Looks like you're modeling it after a ships chronometer.

The real ones occassionally show up on ebay:

marine ship chronometer KIROV CCCP 21983

Yes, i must say i was inspired by the nautical theme, what with the box and all. Part of my idea to make it timeless. Part of the reason i made this, is because i wanted something like what you show in your link, but no way i could afford it!
Patrik says: May 19, 2008. 12:05 PM
Nice! I have to admit I liked it better before the black paint though - too much black, not enough brass... Old watches, or even alarm clocks can be a good source for decorations as well - typically found for cheap at your local flee market or goodwill store.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to PatrikMay 19, 2008. 2:31 PM
I must say, i wasnt sure about the painting, i didnt quite like the newness, and i wasnt sure if the metal would tarnish. Quite rite, i have used a few old watch parts to make this! Thanx for the comment
Gnome in reply to PatrikMay 19, 2008. 12:43 PM
I liked it better before the paint too.
beaulingpin says: May 19, 2008. 11:43 AM
Ok, I've built it, now how to I traverse time with it? so far, I can only go forward in time, at the speed of regular time...
gmjhowe (author) in reply to beaulingpinMay 19, 2008. 2:29 PM
I tell you how to build, not how to operate - i will post that instructable a few years ago.
bowmaster in reply to beaulingpinMay 19, 2008. 12:35 PM
That is what it is for...
bowmaster says: May 19, 2008. 12:35 PM
It does look timeless. Gears and cogs from the past but it looks like it is from the future.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to bowmasterMay 19, 2008. 2:29 PM
thanx, im glad i achieved this!
AndyGadget says: May 19, 2008. 12:23 PM
By my calculations, this device will move itself, the operator and the rest of our universe (and any attendant parallel ones) instantaneously through time. I defy anyone to prove it doesn't.
gmjhowe (author) in reply to AndyGadgetMay 19, 2008. 2:28 PM
Perfect calculations!

Great looking prop. Nice steampunk design. I can see something like that being used in a fan movie!
It's similar to the device used in the old tv show Voyagers from 1982
