How to Buy from China

Summary:
This is a guide to purchasing ("sourcing") from China, and working with Chinese factories. It will probably be most helpful to people like me - entrepreneurs developing a new product or starting a new business that need to obtain parts and raw materials from China. It is written humorously, but hopefully there is some useful advice.

I've been doing a lot of shopping recently. I have one favorite store. I buy nearly everything there.

Do you think Home Depot is big? Wall Mart? Amazon? Ebay? McMaster Carr?

HAH!

They are all pathetic and insignificant compared to The Greatest Store The World Has Ever Known. I am sure you are wondering - "how is that possible? no store is bigger than Wall-Mart!" . You are wrong my friend. There is One Store bigger than Wall Mart. MUCH bigger. Where do you think wall-mart, amazon and mcmaster go when they need to buy something? Sorry jimmy - they don't go to another wall-mart. They go to The Store. It is where all goods come from. ALL of them. You know it as: China.

Perhaps you thought you had to be a "big player" to buy from China? Think again. You and me can buy direct from The Greatest Store The World Has Ever Known. It's easy and fun! I will show you how.

So, say thanks to your new friend Globalization, read on, and soon you too will be a global sourcing expert...

Step 1: A Little History

dsc_3833_edited-1.jpg
It used to be that buying stuff from far away places was hard. You had to send a ship across the ocean for a couple years, they might all die at the hands of a storm or bandits, and in the end maybe you get a few grams of Pepper for a piece of gold. woot!

In more modern times, international trade was not so expensive or risky, but it was inaccessible because you had to know someone. 20 years ago if i wanted to buy something from a factory in Mexico, how would I do it? If I didn't know someone my best shot would probably be to go to Mexico and start driving around until I found a factory, buy some samples on the spot and write their address and phone number on a piece of paper and drive home.

As you might expect, the greatest agent of change in our lifetimes - the internet - plays a central role here. In the last 5 years countless Chinese companies have figured out that if they make a web page and hire someone with enough english to process an order, they can bypass lots of middlemen and be far more accessible to their potential customers - YOU!

I plan to visit china.I have a gift store at Baghdad- Iraq. i am interested in novelties, kitchen accessories, house accessories, baby stuff and related items as a unique, strange and nice gift to buy . i plan to buy these stuff in small quantities for my store. I wonder if these items can be found in showrooms in china or i have to visit the factories in different places which is not always convenient. if anyone can help in telling me where and how to buy these items i would be much obliged.I plan not to waste my time at china and go directly to the right place.

very detailed instuction to do business with china company.. but if you are one big wholesaler buyers or importers. you do not have time to communicate with all factories. for example, you importe jewelry, bag, scaf, belt from china, you do not enough time to contact one by one. the best way is that you can find turstable china soucing agent  Who can handle everything for you and accept paypal .

Great article! One of the tips I learned (from link provided below) to verify a supplier before trusting them with a large order is to check out the registration of their phone number.

If a factory claims their factory is in a certain province in China but the number is a mobile phone registered in Hong Kong, you know you have a problem.

I did a lot of Googling for different information and strategies before starting my own importing business. I eventually went with this Guide on How To Import from China but there are others available online as well.

you can buy from taobao agent ,like smalltao.com .There have all kinds of products, and the price is so cheap. The most impotant thing is that operating is convenience and easy .
StellaBB in reply to dawm123Jun 10, 2012. 6:05 AM
Taobao Agent only focus on Taobao. But if you want to find product source, you need some cooperator to beat the jungle. As far as I know, 1688.cn is the wholesale website where factories are listing their products, with detailed prices. Last time I tried getting the product source from 1688.cn with the help from China purchase agent- FreeShoppingChina.com. And I received it. However, I paid service fee. ... Agent sometimes is really helpful, but you need to find a trustable one by starting with a small order.

Good instructions for online. But there is ANOTHER offline way to buy from China directly if you're a stores owner or big online selling company.

It;s GO TO YIWU! The huge wholesale market there would be a good start to buy from China directly.

You can read all info. of Yiwu market and how to buy from Yiwu China on this site - http://www.yiwu-market-guide.com/ . Fresh and original content, 100% !

Hi,
Thanks for sharing in this site.

I got cheat just few days ago from some Chinese that selling Apple products. Once they put their hands on my sent money $450, they're other faces revealed to me. They starting to tell me I have to buy more quantities than they asked before which is 3 items as minimum. They are just a fraud company.

The fraud company is: www.z-mall.com

Also I have about 18 companies that came with above address, but I don't know if they are fraud or not because I was curious to deal with them after what happened to me. Also Still one company waiting from them to send a Laptop, but no answer from them! I hope they are not fraud too : /

Furthermore, I have ordered many USB that have large capacities, but either they fake or don't keep the data for long time. The good news that they sent me something and they did not keep the money for them selves :)

* How much do you charge for shopping agent?
* How can I get my money or my goods if I have someone in China?

Thanks
Vegtor

I am new to this but have been here for 11 years and have good contacts with people I believe to be honest. Anyway, will leave you alone for now, contact me if you wish.

Hi Vegtor,

I am sorry that you got cheat online on some Chinese websites. It also happen to our local people. You just need sharp eyes.
And pls remember you will never get cheaper Apple products in China. The real apple products are more expensive due to the import tax. But for some USB sticks, I could help to find cheaper but good quality ones if you wish.
The way I do the online shop agency is that you let me know what do you want to buy and we confirm via email, I then purchase them for you then ship to you ( not big qty only), you pay via paypal.
More details, you may contact me via my email: janice.sijie@gmail.com.

I have a question. I found something I'm interested in but the it says L/C in the payment box. I'm just wondering what it means. It also says T/T but someone said that was a  wire transfer.
sadywuchao2008 in reply to ChaosJile119Jul 9, 2010. 7:59 AM
What is L/C? L/C=letter of credit importer:for example.it is like an american company or person , exporter: it is like a seller from China. 1.the two sides(importer and exporter) reach a contract. 2.importer applies for opening L / C from his own country's bank. 3.importer's own country's bank hands the L/C to the seller's local bank, like bank of china etc. 4.the local bank informs the seller that the L/C has arrived ,and the seller goes to the bank to take L/C. 5.the seller will have to make the shippment ready within the prescribed time according to the L/C. 6.the seller sends the shippment within the prescribed time(from L/C),and hands some necessary documents (including L/C,and others, like the seller's getting-shippment permmission document from the shipping company)to his local bank. 7.seller's local bank then pays to the seller in advance for the importer. 8.seller's local bank sends the payment document to the importer's own country's bank. 9.importer's own country's bank pays to the seller's local bank. 10.importer's own country's bank asks the importer to make the payment to the bank. 11.importer first makes the payment, then is given the getting-shippment permmission document from the bank. 12.the importer goes to the shipping company to get the shippment. If you need to buy something from China, not in a very big quantity.(not as big as a container)you can go to www.taobao.com to take a look, taobao is founded by Alibaba company in 2003,it is now the biggest B2C online shopping website in China, like ebay.you can find anything you need with a definitely good price from it.If you need some help for the language gap or payment method, you can also find some taobao agents, they provide traslating service ,and accept international payment method like paypal. www.haoobuy.com is the one I recommend, you can see some detailed information from the website, and online service is also available,so it's perfect for foreigners.

When buying clothing from Chinese manufacturers, is it a crime for them to have the logo of a company (North Face, Columbia, Nike) on their clothing?  Is it a crime to purchase an item from them that includes a company's logo?

dan (author) in reply to Brennn10Mar 5, 2010. 12:53 PM
it probably is not a crime for them to make it, but you will violate copyright and/or trademark laws by importing it to your country and/or selling it.

Since I think your a cyclist, I thought you would be interested.

Through your recomendation I have contacted a seller in China and they are willing to send me two nice bikes for $560ea. even though they request a min. order of 30. Its now a mater of shipping costs.

http://www.alibaba.com/product-gs/260514347/Alloy_Road_Bike_Shimano_105_Road.html

You say that by sea (FOB) and pick up at the docks is a bureaucratic nightmare! Damm. That sucks for me because thats the cheapest way to get it here. He quoted me $18 FOB by sea each or $560 to express each of them. Based on, if I am reading it right, the Harmonized Tariff Schedule I would only pay 11% (duty/tax). Here is where I need your advice because I want to do this myself since there seams no way to do this cheaply with a middle man like freight forward, and that  is what do I need in the way of paper work before I go down to the docks in Brooklyn to pick these up?

my research tells me so far I need for an "Informal Entry"; the Harmonized Tariff Schedule number, a bill of sale to appraise the goods for duty charge

Any of your advise on this would help. Thanks a bunch

Sellers want you to come to them, rather than them having their prices on display, they can change the prices when they want (perhaps even for different people) without all other buyers knowing that some people may get "special treatment".

A quick question re: Fraud. I'm not a lawyer, nor do I expect you are, but isn't claiming that you are part of a company that is fictitious for the purpose of obtaining "free" sample product fraud on your part, or my part for that matter as I fully intend to follow these steps? I just want to know so I can be prepared should the Worst Case Scenario reveal itself.
frollard in reply to The WapuskJun 19, 2009. 7:23 AM
it *is* uttering to suggest you work for a company that doesnt exist.
nospamnyc in reply to The WapuskAug 3, 2008. 10:59 AM
I first encountered Global Sources several years ago (I had purchased one of those lists off eBay) and made attempts to score some free samples of multiple products to be shipped via my Fedex account. Within a week I received a very stern email from GS stating that they suspected me of attempting fraud and threatened to report me to the FBI!! Whaa? It should be noted that I used my own domain's email account, but had no website up.
jongscx in reply to The WapuskJul 31, 2008. 12:54 PM
Not necessarily... You don't have to explicitly lie about being a big company... just make it appear as such and don't explicitly say that you're not. okay, maybe it is... but they've budgeted for "free samples" already, YOU're the one paying for shipping (except in the case of chinaAir...), and in the future, you MAY become a corporate buyer anyway... I guess basically, just don't worry about it...
tehsuxs in reply to jongscxJul 31, 2008. 4:52 PM
It's a means to an end basically. You won't be able to get the information and item you need if you don't represent yourself this way.

jimmason in reply to dasadlerJan 7, 2009. 6:53 PM
The seller will not know about that. Basically that is your business as an importer to understand about. Check with your government trade office to find out about it, or someone you know in your industry.

Good information! Remember the earthquake when contacting a company directly. Be compassionate. Many are still repairing their factories while dealing with heavy losses. (None of them will admit this though.) Vehicles do not come assembled completely. Most mechanics won't mess with them either. You need to have some ability to assemble these. Also, make sure a scooter, or motorcycle is EPA and DOT approved, or you won't be riding it in the U.S.
joekenadee in reply to Very InterestingAug 12, 2008. 1:40 PM
Also ask them if they have another customer that is located in the U.S. that has one of the scooters/motorcycle already. Some of them are pure junk and break down after a few weeks. I have purchased from Chinavasion and Dealextreme in the past be very careful with Chinavasion make sure to order large and small items separately they will get you on s&h if you bundle them together. The most important thing if any company asks you to western union cash avoid them like the plague I've been scammed several times that way paypal is an easy way to do business with china and will save you on transfer fees. Never ever under any circumstance should you buy "razor blades" from china they are very poor condition and will cut you faster than you can say mach zero razor blades suck=)
yoshhash says: Aug 12, 2008. 7:20 AM
This is a great instructible, but I sure hope all you readers are not so irresponsible and selfish enough to jump into this free-for-all. Not sure if you know what "externalization" is, but this is what is wrong with the world today....value is measured only by the price tag. It's bad enough that we line up like drones to buy crap from Walmart, but we don't need to push the boundary even further just to get free stuff. If you are seriously contemplating lining up for the trough, you need to grow up.

picbuck says: Aug 4, 2008. 1:03 PM
Umm...it's not Free on Board. It's Freight on Board. Historically, it means the ship is at the wharf and your freight is on board. Still aboard the ship, that is. Now it's up to you to get it unloaded and carted away. This is reasonable because a foreign shipper might have no knowledge of local wharf procedures or possible import duties, whereas you, the local receiver, presumably do know. Today it means your merchandise is delivered to X point, and then you must arrange for the final delivery or face penalties. For instance, "FOB our Newark Warehouse" means it's in the warehouse waiting for you, and if you don't truck it away you'll have to pay a return shipping or other charge. And by the way, don't neglect those import duties or other customs charges. The customs officers inspect before a ship is allowed to unload. They know about your freight before you do.

FOB (Free On Board) destination designates that the seller is responsible for the goods until the buyer takes possession.

It is a bit more complex especially for international shipping. Read this Wikipedia article for a clearer idea about FOB.

This was written so lightly that I wanted to call it 'amusing', but it really is informative. Great Instructable! And, with a project or three on the drawing board, I might have a use for this!!
LARRYHARE72 says: Aug 1, 2008. 12:39 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in my experience "fob" stands for "free-on-board" and indicates resposibility of shipment belongs to the seller? Interesting instructable, very cool!

Getting the sample for "free" totally depends on its unit cost. A plastic monkey to hang from your summer drink glass is free with your cost being the shipping to get it to you. A 500cc retro chopper motorcycle will cost you its typical wholesale amount (sample pricing) plus the shipping to you, plus customs & duty. If you can find the identical item already in the US, buy it. It most certainly came over here packed tightly into a shipping container via sea freight with lots more and that cost is spread across the whole lot. You might even find the item costs less buying this way than dinging your Fedex account. Heinlein was right, there is no such thing as a free lunch.

the purpose of this article was not about how to get stuff "free", because you won't be. the purpose was to show how a hobbyist or small business can get started in global product or component sourcing. as to your analysis of final price of a 500cc motorcycle, most of the time it will be a fair bit cheaper to buy direct from china, because the dealer here has applied a minimum 100% markup. for example, i commonly see the same electric scooters selling for about $2000 here that I can buy direct for about $650 plus $500 transport, and just buying 2 of them cuts my transport to $250 each.
soundmotor in reply to danJul 30, 2008. 4:26 PM
100% mark-up (or more) that is common for brick & mortar retailers, not so much for online that only sell via web stores. I took interest in this as I've worked directly with offshore vendors (many in China) for the last ~15 years. There was indeed a time when they would send ridiculous levels of items for free, shipping & all. They still do if you work for an established company looking for an OEM/ODM but rarely if you are not. You do outline a good approach for the small guy trying to get going with an overseas supplier however.
dan (author) in reply to soundmotorJul 30, 2008. 5:19 PM
thanks for the feedback. i have only been doing this a bit over a year so i'm sure there are things i don't know yet. I see plenty of 100% markups on web stores - the only two markets i'm really familiar with (LED lighting and electric bikes) that seems to be the standard.
dan (author) in reply to danJul 30, 2008. 12:29 PM
of course the big benefit of buying an already imported item from a dealer is that you can check it out before buying, and you have a customer service option. plenty of companies in china are making good products, but plenty make terrible products so it is always a gamble on a new factory you might try.

The smart way to ship from Asia is http://www.ems.com.cn/english-main.jsp. Express Mail Service is the insiders way to ship.
dan (author) in reply to NeagleJul 31, 2008. 11:59 PM
yes, it often is cheapest. i recommended asking the sender to include Express shipping, and this is one reason, they often will use EMS. But I know some factories that have contracts with UPS or DHL that are equally low cost to EMS. It's always been cheaper than my own rates though, and I my rates are already significantly better than the "list" pricing.

I was waiting all the way through to find out that "DAN" is actually "Daisy ANg", and to find that this was simply the largest single piece of spam I have ever seen, but, no. A very entertaining read, and useful as well. Well done, dan.

"The sales rep always has an entertaining english name they picked from a children's book about flowers."
It could be worse. My sister's friend in first grade (in Malaysia) decided she wanted her English name to be "Canary". Pronounced "cannery". "Daisy" isn't a weird name, just anachronistic.

"(3) be respectful! you are talking to intelligent people, they just don't know english well."
Thank you for pointing that out.

Only thing I would add is to ask for spec sheets, and what their typical minimum quantities and lead times are. Nothing says legitimacy quite like "Dear Supplier, I am interested in PARTA1-C - DESCRIPTION. I have several questions: Can you send spec sheets for this part? What is your typical lead time on 1000 units? Do you have a minimum order quantity? Thank you, Joe Smith Operations and Finance SOMECOMPANY +1.415.555.1212 (o) +1.415.555.1234 (m) " I've always gotten great responses for these. When pressed for company information, I typically respond that I am a consultant and am working on a prototype for a client. The promise of future business is very enticing.
dan (author) in reply to bradJul 31, 2008. 3:22 PM
yes i agree. usually i ask about lead time and minimum order in the 2nd or 3rd email after i've nailed down what i'm interested in exactly. but asking first is ok. i think i'll add another step about this.

Back in the late 80s before the WWW was getting popular, I had a friend who was born and educated in Hong Kong. She kept pestering me to go into business with her family in HK to import stuff here. She suggested sun glasses because the Sunglass Hut kiosks were taking off big time in the malls. There were two problems at the outset. The glasses were only $0.50 each for any/every style but I had to buy 200,000 units. And they came loose, not packaged. And I had to have a place to put the storage unit they came in. But other than that...
