How to Clean a Fish Tank...

Step 3Siphon the dirty water...

Siphon the dirty water...
You need to get rid of the dirty fish tank water in some way, but a full 10-gallon tank is much too heavy to carry to a sink to pour the water out. That is why you need to get yourself an aquarium siphon. You technically could use any sort of hose, but a siphon made for cleaning aquariums also serves as a vacuum to clean all of the fish poop out of the gravel.

Get your siphon and coil the hose up so it is easier to get the whole thing underwater. Stick your hands to the bottom of the tank, working the siphon to get all of the air bubbles out of the tube. Once you have the majority of the air out of the hose, stick the vacuum end into the gravel and then quickly pull the opposite end of the tube up and out of the aquarium, into something to collect the water. The collection device should be lower than the vacuum end of the siphon, thus allowing gravity to pull the water through the tube and out of the tank.
