Introduction: How to Fold an Origami Snake Head

Hey there! This tutorial will walk you through how to make an origami snake head. The materials needed for this craft are one sheet of paper, preferably letter sized (8.5 inches by 11 inches), a pair of scissors, and your hands. However, any sized paper will work, as instructions on how to make a square are included below. Diagrams and pictures have also been included should you find trouble understanding the text. Preceding creases (folds) are indicated by a solid line, whereas subsequent creases are indicated by a broken line. (Note: You might notice that some lines indicating preceding creases are absent from some of the diagrams. This was intentional as to avoid potential clutter and confusion for the viewer.)

Step 1: Making and Preparing the Square

Diagram 1: To start off, lay the sheet of paper in portrait orientation (short edge horizontal, long edge vertical). After doing so, fold the top right corner (Point A) to the lower left edge (Point B), such that the top edge of the paper aligns with the left edge, forming a point at the top left corner.

Diagram 2: Keeping the paper folded, flip the paper over onto the other side while maintaining the paper in portrait orientation. Fold the bottom edge of the paper up such that the crease aligns with the edge of the prior fold underneath.

Diagram 3: Flip the paper back over to the other side and unfold the creases. Use the scissors to cut along the last crease made. Tossing the bottom strip aside, take the remaining square sheet of paper and fold the top left corner (Point C) to the bottom right corner (Point D) as shown in the diagram. Then unfold. Flip the paper over so that it forms the shape of a pyramid when laid down on a surface.

Step 2: Creating the Base Form

Diagram 4: Fold the top edge of the paper down to the bottom edge, such that the top left corner (Point E) meets the bottom left corner (Point F), and the top right corner (Point G) meets the bottom right corner (Point H). Then unfold.

Diagram 5: Fold the left edge of the paper over to the right edge, such that the top left corner (Point I) meets the top right corner (Point J), and the bottom left corner (Point K) meets the bottom right corner (Point L). Then unfold.

Diagram 6: Flip the paper over and from underneath the center of the paper, push the center up so that the corners of the paper collapse inwards and flatten out the paper as shown below. Fold the bottom flap up such that the bottom corner (Point M) meets the top corner (Point N). Repeat on the other side.

Step 3: Last Folds

Diagram 7: Fold the left and right corners (Point O and Point P) towards the center (Point Q), such that the bottom left and right edges align with the center line. Repeat on the other side.

Diagram 8: Fold the top flap down over the top edge of the previous crease, such that the top corner (Point R) meets with the center line (Point S). Repeat on the other side.

Step 4: Finishing Up

With your thumbs in the recesses behind the previous creases created on both sides, pull away in opposite directions, stretching the right side towards the right and the left towards the left.

And you're done!

I hope you found this tutorial interesting!

Very nicely done! Any idea how you could fold the rest of a snake body? Might be a cool way to make a snake for Halloween decor.
