I love the way the cherry trees outside my building bloom cheerfully each Spring.  I wanted to bring the beauty of those cherry blossoms indoors so I made some out of tissue paper and to make them even more special I added LEDs

These pretty lights are inexpensive and easy to make.  They are made mostly from material found at a dollar store.  You can make several branches for a spray of cherry blossoms to decorate your room.

Step 1: What you will need

material.JPG

  • White LED Christmas lights (battery powered) -you can pick these up on sale after Christmas or here.
  • Tissue paper (shades of white and pink) -you can reuse old tissues from gift bags, it's okay if it's crinkly
  • a Branch (I used dollar store flowers, though a real tree branch will do)
  • Floral stem wrap tape (brown)
  • Vase*
  • Sand/ gravel or small stones
  • Twist ties
  • Glue (glue stick and craft glue)
  • Pliers
  • Scissors/rotary cutting tool

*If you use lights that need to be plugged into an outlet, you need a vase that you can cut a hole in to allow the plug through the bottom.

Soooooooooo cool and beautiful! you have posted an excellent Instructable! Thanks so much. BTW, I was wondering if there is a possibility that the tissue paper could catch on fire?

Thanks! Leds don't give off very much heat (that is why they are so energy efficient). Though it can't hurt to keep an eye on it if it is left on for long periods of time.

Beautiful! I love cherry blossoms. I might do this with some silk orchids that I bought from a dollar store. Thanks!

Cool, that would look really nice with orchids. I would love to see it when you are done.

Oh my gosh. What a wonderful idea. I've made this in several different colors including orange, blue and purple. Such a terrific idea. Thanks so much! :D

Thank you for your amazing instructions, I was able to make mind with no hickups! I used duct tape instead of twist ties, and removed it as I went a long. I bought the LED lights from your link and had so many lights to work with half ended up being hidden by sand. My niece is going to love it!

Hey! Here's a question. What should I do if the LED wire is too long for my branch (there are several lights to spare)?
LOVE this, by the way.
ChrysN (author) says: Sep 3, 2011. 4:57 PM
If the lights are wired in parallel you can cut the extra lights off at the end furthest away from the battery and just wrap the wire at the end with electrical tape. You can tell that they are in parallel if there are 2 wires linking each light. Don't do this if they are not battery powered and plug into a wall outlet.
aniushkanita says: Sep 4, 2011. 7:45 AM
Mine are only plugged. Can I cut them?
ChrysN (author) says: Sep 4, 2011. 11:21 AM
No, the voltage from a wall outlet is too high, it would be dangerous to have a cut wire. Maybe you can wrap the extra lights with black tape and hide them in the vase.

Alright, thanks a lot. Cheers!

May I ask if you can possibly post pics when its dimmer and the lights are on? That would be wonderful thanks.
ChrysN (author) says: Sep 3, 2011. 11:07 AM
The blossoms do give off a fair bit of light so it is hard to get a much darker picture.

This looks really cool. However my concern is the heat from the lights burning the paper.
ChrysN (author) says: Aug 24, 2011. 4:02 PM
LED lights don't give off very much heat (that is what makes them so efficient). You can have it on for a long time without being a hazard.

Most of the time I get lost halfway through the instructions, but yours were flawless! I'm really tempted to make this for my bedroom. All I have to do is find the time. Thanks!

These are beautiful. I saw something like this in a store a while back and was thinking about how I'd like to try to make something like that. Your instructions are fabulous---maybe I'll actually get around to trying it someday now.
