What's up everyone.
We're back with another Tutorial Series
"How To Use Pepakura For Foam Costume Building"
This is just an introduction of what will be coming up regarding this method.
STEALTH explains some of the materials you'll need and explains what's in store for the next video
So Stay Tuned!

*NOTE - I recommend following the videos in the order that they're displayed on this page and not click the links to other videos when indicated unless it's for a specific technique.

If you venture out of this page and on to YouTube, it may get confusing.
I've set it up to hopefully keep it organized and comprehensive manner. *

"Where can I get FOAM?"  Use google!
Search for Anti-fatigue mats or EVA foam mats / rolls etc

There are lots of EVA Closed cell foam distributors online.
I recommend getting 1/4" thickness

Kmart sells the foam I use as well. Click here!

Here are the links to the Pepakura Templates files
(You will need WINRAR to uncompress the files.)

Here's an Example of what a foam costume looks like when it's pretty much completed
WAR MACHINE COSTUME - EVA FOAM :

Once you've downloaded the files Please follow this video - Please note - If you already have pre-modified files,
you don't need to follow the modification steps shown in the video. Just skip to scaling or printing them.
This Video will also explain the software and will tell you where to get Pepakura Designer v3.

You can also get it here:

http://tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura-en/

USING THE PEPAKURA SOFTWARE

Next Step:
Once you've Printed out the Pepakura Templates for a specific part. You cut out the Templates. Pretty Simple enough.
Then Please Follow this Video on what to do with the Cardstock templates.

USING THE TEMPLATES TO BUILD THE ARMOR PARTS

Next Step - Let's say you have your Armor all built. You're wondering "How do I connect it together to wear?"
well, I've got you covered. This next video will give you a basic idea on the concepts used for connecting foam armor costume parts together. This is a good base to get an idea on what to use. Feel free to get creative and change it up if you'd like.

CONNECTING FOAM ARMOR COSTUME PARTS

Next Step - Once you've set up your armor to wear. Now you need to add the "Power Source"
Time to add the Unibeam Light effect to the chest piece
It's a simple method that you can follow along in this next video:

UNIBEAM CHEST LIGHT TUTORIAL

Next Step:
Now that you have the Arc Reactor Unibeam light installed. I think it's safe to paint the Costume up now.
I've created this video to show you an inexpensive way to seal foam armor before painting.
Sealing it is very important as, foam is very porous. If you don't seal it, the paint will soak in and it will look very low quality and very dull and you will see all the pores.
So please follow a long and then start painting your Armor.

SEALING AND PAINTING FOAM COSTUMES

Next Step - So you're all done sealing and painting your armor! Good job. It's time to add some lights to that helmet.
I'm showing you how to do the eye lighting technique on my resin pepakura helmet but this method works just as well
on a Foam Helmet. So not to worry.

HELMET EYE LIGHTS TUTORIAL

Bonus Tutorial:
So you've worn your costume and had a lot of fun making people smile and your hard work.  The fun is over for now.
Time to put away the costume. Don't just put it in a closet or a box where it can get ruined

Display it with Pride! Create a duct tape mannequin and show it off for people to see!
follow this video and enjoy.

DISPLAY YOUR ARMOR - DUCT TAPE DUMMY

In conclusion - I hope you've watch all the videos carefully. I hope you do attempt to make one of your own IRON MAN /WAR MACHINE costumes. It's a fun journey after it's all said and done. You're left with really something awesome to enjoy and not have to break the bank. I've built an IRON MAN foam costume for around $100 with the material used.

You can also search on google for other pepakura files. Some might even be pre modified for foam or you can just use the tutorial to learn to mod them for your own personal use.

Thank you for your time.
Build, Enjoy and Good luck!

Looks awesome and cant wait to make it! Just one question! Does Pepakura change according to your size?
Synntex says: May 4, 2013. 2:42 AM
On a scale of 1-10, what would you rate this project? I really wanna make one just after watching Iron Man 3 a few days ago (I know that this is an Iron Man 2 suit) and I was wondering, would this be an easy project for a first timer. And are you gonna make an Iron Man (Mark 42) suit tutorial? Cheers.
lasher.family says: Apr 11, 2013. 6:18 AM
Amazing work! Looks awesome.

About what height are the templates made for? Was curious as to adjustments in templates to compensate for height and size differences.

Coming from an Italian family of stone sculptures that dates back a few hundred years, I have no problem calling this “Art”..... WOW, this is amazing work – great stuff.

I only wish I could find these templates in PDF. I’m pretty good with my hands & have built plenty of stuff using plans but that’s where I peak with a computer, printing out PDF templates.

Too bad, this would be a great project to get my 17 year old to spend some time with his not so anymore cool dad.

If they exist, I would appreciate a link to the PDF files.

Again, pure art work...A+

For your video on sealing and painting the foam, another automotive product that works great for this is Bumper renewal paint. Designed to renew black plastic bumpers. It is similar to the vinyl dye paint but has a little more body. Its has plasticizers in it that help it to bond to a variety of plastics, rubber and foams. It is self-leveling, can fill small voids and remains flexible.

Excellent work! I've built a few costumes over the last couple years and thinking about moving into foam building; I have costumes in the epic & easy categories as well (Killer Croc & Batmobile). I threw a well deserved vote your way. Just wondering if you have any plans of putting up a tutorial on the motorization/lighting of the face plate?
