How to Make Indonesia's WajanBolic or PanciBolic (USB)

How to Make Indonesia\
My third instructables! Now I'm gonna teach you all Indonesia's Wifi Antenna made of wok.

NOTE: I didn't invent this cool thing.

Step 1Gather the parts!

Gather the parts!
What you need:

1. Extended USB cable (click here)
2. Wok or the cover of a saucepan. (I use the cover of saucepan, because it's lighter).
3. USB WiFi
4. 3" PVC pipe. You need at least 1m. (depending of your wok size)
5. 1.25" PVC pipe. You need just a little of it, at least 5" long. Cut the middle (like in the picture)
6. Doff for 3" pipe (doff=pipe cover, holed in the middle. One of them connect to 1.25" doff using screw)
7. Doff for 1.25" pipe (stick aluminium foil inside then hole in midle, the other don't need to be holed)
8. Aluminium foil
9. Drill

Cool, how do you calculate the focal point? And whats a doff, haven't heard that term before.

doff = pipe cap

The design is ingenious -- the way you've combined a parabolic antenna with a waveguide antenna is both stable and cheap! Well done.

However, I don't see why you have the 1.25'' pipe piece in there. What does it do? Wouldn't the design work just as well without that piece?

i think the small piece work as holder for the wifi modem

Millmore, i am not sure if it is have to be 1m, but i think you have to check the calculation detail about this equipment. There is standard calculation for this equipment including detail about the pipe length needed, i was read it some month a go. You may find at the link some where he gave.
But the bad news, standard calculation have been made in Indonesian language, you need a dictionary maybe :).

There are several links on the web including the formula you need to calculate the focal point for the parabola. Have used a seive and similar to gain access to free internet services outside normal range of usb dongles and have also managed to link across our local park between laptops (1km+) just try words like diy wifi antenna. good luck

It's too bad you couldnt probably get a wifi connection with an ipod using this.. Im confused. Is this a Wifi range booster and a Wifi Pickup range boost? I know some devices allow external antennas for long-range pick up.. But not ipods!

Are you sure you need 1m of 3" pipe? Your picture shows about 30cm. Step 3 is a little vague. How long should the foil and non-foil sections be? Is the 1.25" pipe there to hold the USB stick in place? If so, how does it do that? Thanks Martin

Greetings, How about some descriptive information in the introduction on what this thing is. What is the range? Anyone have a link on this? I can usually find anything in wikipedia, but can't find this. Thanks

Very nice way to mount a collector to a dish. I would wonder about the way the adapter is mounted though, the distance into the 3 inch tube that the adapter is placed can change the performance. At least that is what I found on a tube I built out of a fire extinguisher measuring about 3 inches in diameter. At first I had placed my adapter all the way in, like you did here, with just the connector outside of the tube, but I found that I got a better signal by pulling the adapter most of the way out. More info here: Wireless Internet Cantenna Wrapping PVC in foil is a good idea, I use a similar approach on the cone of my last wi-fi antenna: Conetenna I would expect the PVC to have no reduction in signal. The collector you built will probably cover a larger dish, I've heard from some really picky designer types that the outer edge of a parabolic dish shouldn't be counted on for much of a signal, so if you can find a reflector that extends a bit beyond what the collector is covering, the better. I would recommend combining your PVC collector with this: Parabolic Reflector

May I ask, can the signal/radio waves pass thru the PVC, as it shown here its inside the PVC and theres no metallic or foil inside to reflect thru the saucepan lid/wok. Can you enlighten me. I like to work on this. thanks in advance:)

What is the difference between a single USB wi-fi and this thing?
Jul 15, 2008. 3:52 AMfrollard says:
This transforms the usb from omnidirectional (relatively weak in all directions) to a 'beam' antenna, which focuses the signal to be entirely directional. If you know where you're shooting, these are much better at attaining a strong signal to that destination. With a cantenna on each end of the wifi connection, you can shoot for miles (google wifi shootout). I think the record is over 40 miles with a standard unamplified signal, between two mountain peaks in death valley. To do that they use huge repurposed satellite dishes.
