So here we are going to make a small wind turbine. You can make it easily at home. Almost 90 percent of the parts are made of PVC fittings and pipes. So it is very easy to assemble or disassemble and carry it to your classroom. I have uploaded my own video making this small mini wind turbine on youtube. I have also embedded that here. Step 1: Step 1: Making Propeller

Buy a 10 inch PVC Pipe (3inch in diameter)

equally divide the edge perimeterCut the pipe into blades as shown in video- watch video

Make holes as shown in the picture on anything round in shape with 2.5 inches.

Then screw 3 blades to it using cycle screws.

Step 2: Step 2: Making Wind Turbine Base

The turbine base and the post holds the propeller, dynamo, tail, and autorotation mechanism. It is very easy to make the turbine base. Buy some PVC fittings.

Elbow – 4PVC T – 3PVC pipe piecesConnect these fittings as shown in the figure.

Step 3: Step 3: ​Make Small Wind Turbine Tail

Most of the DIY wind turbine videos on youtube doesn’t have a tail- autorotation mechanism (yaw mechanism). Without a tail-autorotation mechanism, a Small wind turbine is not complete. What is the purpose of a tail? The tail auto rotation mechanism will help the propeller to change the direction to face the wind. Th tail will force the propeller to face the wind even at higher wind speeds.

Step 4: Step 4: Making Dynamo Casing

PVC Fitting T

Buy 2 bearings

Buy a dynamo 3V

Connect the dynamo to the PVC fitting.

Connect the two bearings to a common axis.

A piece of a pen can be used as the axis.

Step 5: Step 5: Mini Wind Turbine Is Ready

Place the wind turbine in front of a fan

connect a multimeter to the output wires of the dynamo.Yes, Multimeter needle is indicating a current flow through it. If you are using an efficient Dynamo, you can use this dynamo to charge your 3 v rechargeable battery. Besides, You can build a larger wind turbine than this to charge your smartphone too.

    Very clever! That's cool that you were able to make so much of it from plain old PVC. Is any DC motor a dynamo?

    It's a dc motor.. Not a dynamo.. However we think its helpful to understand how a horizontal axis windturbine works.. Am I right?

    Are all DC motors capable of producing current? Reason I ask is that I have a hefty 12V motor from an old automobile radiator fan and a 15V motor from a cordless weed whacker and I wonder if I could use them in a project like yours.

    All brushed DC motors can be used directly as generators. The motors you described are brushed.

    Brushless can also be used as generators, but the circuitry would be different.

    Large wind turbines use 3 blades fro harmonic reasons. 6 also works, but it is too expensive for the yield. In this case, considering the size, harmonic vibration wouldn't be a problem. So, the more of the "disc" that is occupied with solid blades, the better.

    I think that this is cool. Making alternative energy through wind power. I just have a few questions about risks including accidently killing birds if you place it in very high places.

    Do you know of the 100 thousand birds of pray at the wind farm in California? The cheaper and less efficient types that only produced 100 kW killed a lot more than the 1 Mw types.
